Goddamn this show rips. Ninamori is low-key the best character. Forget the robots and whatever- the first time I watched, when she revealed the glasses were fake, I was rocked.

robofunk

They were referencing Doraemon in the subs. He's an blue earless robot cat.

The Pillows remind of what Oasis could have sounded like if the Gallagher brothers hadn’t done so much cocaine and meth. (I say this as someone whose favorite band is Oasis)

Some shows make you feel happy. Some shows make you feel sad. FLCL is a show that makes me feel stupid and confused and I’m here for it!

WHAT! PATREON HAS AN APP? THIS IS SO COOL! I'M POSTING FROM THE APP, NOT THE WEBSITE! I'M USING TALK MODE TOO. HOW DO I STOP THIS. BABE. IT'S NOT STOPPING. WHY IS IT ALL CAPITALISED? FUCK.

One of my favorite things about this show is just how absolutely wacky the animation gets. Whenever Haruko crashes her Vespa into somebody, you know you're in for some of the most looney tunes-ass shit you've ever seen.

Small correction for my last comment, I must have watched this on Adult Swim since this didn't air on Toonami until 2013. Apologies, I was smoking lots of weed at the time and still am if I'm being honest.

Hurts my heart a bit that the crew seem much more non-plussed with FLCL compared to Suzumiya, but maybe it’s an example of how you never know how something is going to hit people. It’s especially interesting how anime and its specific tropes can taken one way or the other. While the horniness in FLCL is weird and potentially off putting it didn’t get me like Suzumiya’s fan services stuff which I found so off putting I dropped the series after episode 5.

Tbh I understand this show now more watching it after not having watched it in 15 years. I'm out here like, "this show's about puberty and all of that shit" I love this show and I think I might have seen it as a young teen too many times, but I love it more now. I watched on the Funimation app and I only watch dubs (I know, don't @ me about it), I feel like the dubs do a good job of translating without losing anything because of all of the double entendre are there. In any case, the batshittery of this show is everything. OH! and if y'all want an easier watch, you should watch Berserk next! either start with the Golden Age Arc re-dos or with the old 90s anime that covers the same ground. Berserk would be amazing for y'all Either Berserk or Tokyo Ghoul!

I know it's too late, but I'd like to retroactively nominate calling the FLCL feedback/question segment "Furi Queries"

Heather jokingly referenced the vending machine show during her anime tropes rant. I went on a "bad isekai" deep dive recently bc I had a back injury and a lot of time to kill and that was one I caught up on. the protagonist (Boxxo, a man reincarnated as a vending machine) can't talk, move or otherwise emote, he can only communicate through 5 preprogrammed phrases and his ability to change what he is vending/the form of his vending machine. With that restriction it only takes 6 episodes before he's central to this world's plot to summon Shenron from Dragon Ball. While not an amazing show, it solidified my new favorite anime trope which is "if these fantasy idiots tried Japanese food they would never want anything else" FLCL is still as confusing and beautiful as I remember!

This show still doesn't do it for me but, for some reason, I'm getting interested in a rewatch of Breaking Bad.

David Mucci

Although similarly to Nick I found one episode to be the most accessible to date and the other to be confounding, for me it was a complete flip! For episode 3 I was like “this is still weird, but I can at least follow this now.” And that all went out the window with episode 4, which I found to be baffling and kinda disturbing. Although this show is overall pretty compelling, even when I don’t understand it!

Minor correction on the killing of robo-dad: Naota *did* hit the TV. The sequence is disjointed and hard to follow but what we see is that he hits the TV with the bat and the clock on top of it bounces off (as if it was on a lever) and smashes robodad in the face. That's why we also see a smashed and bloody clock on the floor in that sequence.

This was a formative show for me at the time, watching on Adult Swim as a teen. I remember it being horny and confusing. Revisiting it as an adult, I now see that it is horny and confusing!

The Weezer conversation made me think of this: the band Bring Me the Horizon has a song called LosT which starts out with “Watching Evangelion with a big fat slug of ketamine. I lost the plot a little while ago”. (The video is absolutely wild so fair warning if you decide to look it up) They also have a song called Shadow Moses, and was asked by Hideo Kojima to write a song for Death Stranding.

Yeah, I don’t like this show at all. It’s really weird, yet I’m still somehow finding it incredibly boring.

Grant Prusi

I’m realizing that everything I remembered about this show was from the first episode, so it’s like I’m getting to watch it again for the first time. I assume I’m just as confused now as I was back then, but having just as good of a time.

XRedGambit

It's been a while since I've seen these 2 episodes and the 1st time I'm watching this series subbed. I watched it when it 1st came out in dub form on Adult Swim. Even then I think it took 3-4 months before I watched all the episodes as I was just catching it and didn't have a DVR at the time. I've been weebing Japan youtubers that travel the city/country. Most are not Japanese but people that moved there to teach. I plan on going to Japan within the next 2-3 years and it's a great holdover/mental checklist of places. Hearing you talk about weezer/Eva crossover made me ask if anyone has a favorite fan made anime music video? Mine is "Hero of the Day" with Dragon Ball as the video.

ColtonFS

I watched this show for the first time a couple years ago, and I decided to watch episode 4 when my wife was in the next room getting ready. Of course she came in during the "massage" scenes to ask what I was watching. Ashamedly, I tried to explain to her that it wasn't porno and sometimes anime is just horny. I'm not sure she totally bought it.

I loved Inuyasha. I didn’t watch it on Adult Swim but ripped through them all a few years ago and really enjoyed it. It’s …wildly long. And a lot like reality tv shows after commercial breaks and the start of each new episode, each Inuyasha episode spends the first 10 mins recapping what happened the episode before, leaving what felt like 5 min of actual new content each ep, which would inevitably be repeated as a wrap up the very next episode, repeat cycle. I think it’d be torturous for y’all to watch.

Mat Leonard

I got lucky with a wife who found and loved FLCL before we met. She has become less tolerant of anime fan service & pedophilia since then but so have I. Noped out of Food Wars after about 5 minutes. If the team would like a more chill and uplifting next series, I suggest Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! It's about three high school girls making anime and not pervy and straightforward with great characters and animation.

Dissonance

So I also am an early era Weezer fan and it’s undoubtedly true that Cuomo is an Eva fan seeing as he’s known for being a weeb and an Asian chaser, a fact that actually pushed me away from the band a bit. It’s hard to read Across the Sea the same way knowing that Cuomo literally married a young Japanese fan.

I watched FLCL on Adult Swim's Saturday Block when it first aired. I liked it at the time, but grew to love it upon the multiple Adultswim runs (they'd cycle shows every several months throughout my entire HS life). I think the frenetic pace of the show is perfectly suited for a teen's mind. It's horny at inopportune times, weirdly action oriented, deals with growing into adulthood, and is more confusing than pube-growing puberty. I'll also add that, having only ever watched anime on Toonami or Adultswim, this was the weirdest Anime I'd ever seen, and it's disjoint nature was refreshing and pushed the boundaries of what the artform could do in my mind. PS: I'm Matt's age and read both Catcher in the Rye and the Great Gatsby whilst in public school. I also go back often and read books like that again.

EGAD

FLCL is tied with Eva as my favorite anime. I love this show so much and I love knowing that a yellow Vespa coffee mug exists. I first watched this show when I was around 14 and every time I watch it I feel 14 again. I didn't know what was going on and I didn't care. I just knew that it made me feel a kind of way, a kind of way that you can only really feel as a kid trying to figure out who you are. I think FLCL is meant to be experienced rather than understood. Separately, I am fully on board GUNDAM. Watched Origins and was hooked. I was hesitant to follow up with the original 1979 series since at first glance it looked like "Hanna-Barbera but anime", but holy shit was I wrong. Pretty sure there's a war crime 10 minutes into episode 01. I'm now halfway through the original series and excited to watch nearly 50 years worth of GUNDAM.

Does Wiger hate the dad in this show because he recognizes himself in the character and feels called out

AgeofWalnut

Man, I absolutely loved Evangelion, Chainsaw Man and Bluelock, but fell off of “melancholy” because I wasn’t into it and waited a long time to start a new series. I found the first two episodes of FLCL pretty “meh” but figured I’d keep watching since there are only six episodes, but now I am finding this close to unwatchable. Not sure how much longer I can keep justifying paying for this podcast..

Chris Cooke

FLCL is like Kingdom Hearts - Gotta approach it as pure allegory... Or a really big music video. No thoughts, all vibes. If you think too hard on any part of it, it all falls apart. It wasn't designed to be taken in straight faced or literal. All the characters aren't people, they're concepts. Haruko is life pushing you forward when you aren't ready, Mamimi is an anchor to stagnation and the comforts of what you know. Their warring philosophies of "Never knows best" and "You gotta swing the bat" are two sides of the same coin, inaction vs action. If you look at any of the characters as people they're all awful selfish monsters and you miss the joy of reveling in the chaos as all of these emotions swirl around rendering thoughts and logic trivial.

I love how Nick’s reference point for the shrinky-dink dinosaurs is from The Simpsons not real life.

SalamiSuperstar

I really love Naota as a characterization of an actual young kid. Naota tries so hard to convince everyone, especially himself, that he doesn't care about anything or what people think of him, but it's painfully obvious he cares tremendously. His fight with Ninomori about not wanting to do the play goes from him saying he doesn't care about the play because it's stupid and for kids, to finally admitting the actual reason he doesn't want to do it is he's embarrassed to be in the play. Naota wants so bad for everyone to see him as mature and grown up because he has a warped sense of what being an adult means from his shitty dad. Also, just want to mention my favorite weird detail is when Haruko crashes her Vespa into the Medica Mechanica plant, Naota brings her parts, that end up just being a model Gundam, which somehow morph into part of the bike.
