Doc Robot

Such a satisfying rewatch, a show that is both indefensible and undeniable!

Cal

Rivers Cuomo really missed an opportunity to call his Japanese language band Weeber 🥁🤡

KidKimura

I wrote a new synopsis for FLCL, feel free to send it on to Funimation/Crunchyroll. An uncomfortably horny sci-fi anime where a narcissist father, a psychopathic alien on a scooter, and a 17 year old with borderline personality disorder battle to see who can fuck up a 12 year old boy the most.

I think the “kura” in the second episode could be short for “kuraimakksu” aka climax. That’s just me assuming tho

David Mucci

If I could share What I Been Weebin again, I just finished Revolutionary Girl Utena—a masterpiece—and weeb-adjacent maybe but I also went to Babymetal last week. I went there wearing my very anime-inspired Band-Maid shirt, a band I heard about from Wiger! I got to see them for a Lolla aftershow a couple months ago.

Thanks for introducing me to FLCL, and thanks for riffing on my name so much! I'm glad it brought you all amusement. When I ran for Class President, my campaign slogan was "Git 'er Dunn." Yes, I know. it was... a different time, Also when I gave my campaign speech, I jogged up to the microphone, kept jogging in place, and said "Hi, I'm Jimmy Dunn, and I'm *running* for President." The saddest part? I won.

I’ve rewatched FLCL multiple times over the years and always come away with a different take. My perspective on the themes, characters motivations, the whole steez of it, have changed every time. The only constant stance I have; the soundtrack is an all timer. I just found it on yellow and blue vinyl and my life feels a little more complete.

Just FYI. Taking a tab of acid and watching a season of your favorite anime is my favorite thing to do on this planet. I've gotten dozens of people who "hated anime" to completely change their mind by tripping and watching Jujutsu kaisen Chainsaw man Samuri champloo (less gore for fist time trippers) Any "Fate" show Your name Almost any show with good art direction. The colors just pop so hard and you start to see, some of these shows are almost made for it. I highly recommend any anime fan try it once

For all its aliens, robots, and general bat shit nonsense, the show still feels incredibly human to me. It's funny and sad, chaotic and serene. It's gross, and it's beautiful. I love this show.

In highschool, some friends and I put together a band just to play "Last Dinosaur" (the "next episode" song that's featured in this FLCLimax) at our senior talent show. We called ourselves the Pillowcases. The response was, unsurprisingly, a confused shrug. The both embarrassing and endearing nature of that memory sure does feel emblematic of the show. You guys have mentioned that the show is dense. I think that for many of us who love FLCL, like Eva, the ability to get something new from every re-watch is why we're all still passionate about it, and why when you guys asked what we wanted to watch, we asked for it. Thanks for covering it and listening to my half-baked thoughts about it.

Dean Lowdon Clear

Glad this was only 6 episodes, I think I’d rather suffer through The Endless Eight again than watch any more of this nonsense!

Mobile Suit Bagera

I know that I love this show because, when Ash came in I said, out loud, "Oh no, he's in a bad mood this week." Thinking about the density and inscrutability of the show, when I first saw it I didn't really think about media in terms of themes and messaging. I wonder if I enjoyed it more because I took it at face value and wasn't aware that it was resonating with me subconsciously. Sort of like how when you watch an older movie and think "12-year-old me would have loved this without knowing why".

Sexy Grandma's Retirement Home

One of the many things that I love about this show is how it's told from the perspective of what would normally be a background or at best side character in any other anime. Haruko would be the MC, fighting Medical Mechanica and there'd be a mini-arc where she lands on Earth and runs into Naota and the rest of the crew. Eventually she'd move on and we'd all forget about those people on Earth that got left behind. But seeing it from a normal-ass kid's perspective help show how absolutely nuts everything that's going on is and emphasizes Haruko's toxic side.

Michael Pemulis

I want to hang out with Ash, so we can rob the stock exchange and yell insults at rich people.

Blair Kuehn-Smith

I’ve always loved the end credits for FLCL, but does anyone else feel uneasy when live action is mixed into anime? I’m not sure if it’s uncanny valley or what, but between these end credits, End of Evangelion, and the island murder mystery episode of Haruhi, the live action pieces make me feel anxious (but at the same time, I like it?)

Robot House

Its worth tracking down the flcl manga it adds some context and a longer ending that gives a little closure for Naota and Haruko( even if she lies and says shes a different person)

Jasmine Whitlock

Anyone remember an old PS2 game called Gitaroo Man? I feel like since Matt likes Guitar Hero and the music of FLCL thus game would be tailor made perfect for him. I can’t remember the name of the band who did the soundtrack but it’s seriously great.

Dan

literally subbed the patreon because you were covering FLCL - one of my absolute favorites of all time. it was so fun to rewatch this again (maybe my 4th or 5th watch?) but man there was so much i did not remember!! excited to revisit cyberpunk edgerunners with y’all!

Jayce Beasley

I enjoyed what I was seeing but I watched the episodes hoping to listen to you guys explain what was happening. You were no help.

XRedGambit

This was the 1st time I watched FLCL with Subs. I haven't seen it in a few years and forgot how much that music slaps. I watched it as a 20 year old kid when it 1st came out. Because I didn't have a DVR at the time It may have taken a few months before I finally saw everything. I still feel the same feelings and just as strong when I 1st watched it to watching it now. And I do agree that the last episode had 3 gut punches. I felt like they were a combo of no mom/first love. Noita doesn't act like a kid until he says that she left him. It sounded like more of a kid that misses his mom than just a 1st love thing.

BiPolarBear

So friggin' excited that Edgerunners is getting Anime'd. Cannot wait to cry over a Mexican cyberpsycho again!

Jason Robinson

I always assumed the pun for furi kuri was that opera song, and the climax being “furi kura” matches with the Italian song Funiculì, Funiculà Song by Luigi Denza. Sometimes the childish answer is correct, but I’ve always felt that was too dumb a take to say aloud

James Brooks

Fun fact, Scott of “Scott & Rivers” is a member of late 90s/early 2000s Drive Thru Records band Allister.

Mathew Quitney

A live show would be so fun. You could screen an anime film and then do an episode about the film.

Craig K

I don’t think I’ve ever had more conflicting feelings about a piece of media before. At least 3 or 4 times during my watch, I was actively mad at the podcast for making me watch FLCL, but every time I’d get to feeling like that the show would win me over again. I finished and was like huh I guess I’ll watch the adult swim sequel shows eventually which is staggering considering this show almost became the first I gave up on following along with the podcast several times

Andrew Ingram

Happy to listen along, but I don’t think I can watch Edgerunners again. It is too sad. I think about it often.

corndog

fun connection for FLCL and Cyberpunk Edgerunners: Hiroyuki Imaishi is the director for Cyberpunk Edgerunners and one of the co-founders of Studio Trigger. he was also the animation director for episode 5 of FLCL. personally he's my favorite anime director with FLCL and Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, his first series that he directed for Gainax, being in my top 5 anime. you should also check out Dead Leaves :^)

MechaBeholder

I watched FLCL when it first aired and loved it, but never did a rewatch because I'm always worried how things will hold up. Turns out I still love it. Wild to understand how heavily this was influenced by and subverts Eva this go around. The FLCL robots angel-like design, the seaweed eye-brow guy runs a nerve equivalent, the way Takkun connects to Canti that first time, even things like the poor teacher's car getting destroyed after she just paid it off all remind me of Eva. Most importantly though, I was 100% onboard from the start with Nick's grumble grumble Zelda reference.

I thought joker was queer coded? And Batman is just repressed gay? I hate the idea of incel joker, jokers too expressive as a character to be incel.
