I made the decision to watch this on a flight from Austin to LAX. I knew from passing knowledge the lady wore skimpy clothes but I didn’t know the lady didn’t wear no clothes a’tall. Anyway, love to be the creep on the plane.

Like many, this was one of my entry points to more serious or “grown up” anime after the usual DBZ diet. I had it on VHS as a teen, and have owned various incarnations of it since. I love the GITS wider franchise too. Back in the early 2000’s I won an online competition from Manga Entertainment who used to be the big anime distributor in the UK, and won the first few volumes of the GITS: Stand Alone Complex series on DVD that were then being released, the original manga and the sequel manga (which I remember not liking), a Tachikoma model and some other bits. SAC very different, less intensely cerebral, but a great show. I remember loving that the 2nd season incorporates some of the untouched plots from the original manga. I also generally liked the greater focus on the wider cast, particularly Togusa, and the Tachikomas who steal the show.

Not sure I’d say the phrase “I’m pro-Hummus’ in the current political climate! 😳

This movie is a stone-cold classic! I love how it wrestles with super heady, cerebral concepts about consciousness while it kicks your ass with visceral, grounded action.

Ty for another great episode, if you guys are taking requests I would love an aot watch along or a berserk read along🫶🏼

Wiges killing it with his rendition of the opening song in GitS. “Ghost in the Shell”? More like “Host Sings Well”!

Michael Pemulis

The idea of renting your disconnected body out to sex work, in the Ghost in the Shell manga, is lifted straight out of Neuromancer. It's how Molly Millions makes some of the money to buy her enhancements. Love Ghost in the Shell and Neuromancer.

Nicolas Beuzeboc

This is my favorite Japanese anime movie. Thanks for explaining and giving context to the scenes, I got a better understanding and that made me appreciate it even more.

Nick's vocal rendition of the GITS theme was truly haunting

Interstella 5555!!!!!!!!!! Yasss! Way to go Matt!

It's nice to see the hosts standing up for themselves and pushing back on Ash. Love the character growth in this episode.

Glad you guys covered this movie! I’m also a big fan of Oshii’s two movies leading up to Ghost in the Shell, Patlabor the Movie and Patlabor 2. They’ve got the same languid pacing interspersed with intense action and thoughtful philosophical discussions. A lot of the same staff worked on all three movies including composer Kenji Kawai.

Great movie, great podcast. GITS and the podcast discussion of false memories made me want to rewatch Kaiba. It's a beautiful, heartbreaking show that deals with very personal and human consequences of transferring memories and bodies. From the Kaiba intro - "Are memories one’s soul, or one’s spirit? This is a world where memories can be turned into data and stored. Should your body be destroyed, your memories can can be placed in a new body. Effective immortality. Bad memories are deleted, while fun memories are downloaded. However, this is all limited to the upper class."

Adding to Chris' comment during BlueTalk, Dorohedoro is awesome and is by a mangaka named Q Hayashida—a mysterious woman whose identity is unknown to the public! A manga Banksy if you will. I've been reading Dorohedoro for the past year (the Netflix/Mappa adaptation is good, but I'm still not fully sold on the 3D animation), but only after having discovered it through her newer series Dai Dark—which is genuine one of the only manga that makes me laugh out loud (at a glance it looks incredibly dark, and it is, but it's 99% comedy and 1% nonsense. Basically about an immortal going around space murdering baddies and collecting their bones which he uses to buy dark-magic items).

I wanted to add a comment about the ongoing mentions of Godzilla. A few years ago, an anime came out called SSSS.Gridman (I don't know how to pronounce it either) that is about mechas fighting kaiju. The unique hook is that all of the kaiju designs and fight choreography are made to look as if it could be a costume with a human being inside. I thought it was a really neat way to tie a modern animated show to its live-action roots.

Building off Heather's point about the links between Ghost in the Shell and The Matrix in terms of its resonances for a trans audience: As a non-binary peep, Ghost in the Shell has always given me such strong gender feelings when I watch it. The ways in which it explores the ongoing interplay between embodiment and consciousness, particularly by having multiple gendered (and non-gendered) consciousnesses fluidly coexisting in one body, really resonates for me. Being a naked invisible cyborg bad-ass is my gender euphoria. Long live Cyber-month! (And get well soon, Heather!)

Had Heather seen GunBuster? It was hideaki anno’s directorial debut, it rules. Would make a good series for the podcast

Mentioned my Godzilla picks last week, but I’ll throw them on here. There are a lot of good (and fun) moves, but for the pod to talk about, I would recommend one from each era. Specifically: Gojira (1954) - The original and an incredible film, the American recut with Raymond Burr is also good, but nothing like the original. (Shout out to King Kong vs Godzilla, Godzilla vs Megalon, and Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla) Godzilla vs King Ghidorah (1991) - A wild movie with plenty to talk about. Godzilla meets the Terminator. Includes a Steven Spielberg reference, for some reason Godzilla Final Wars (2004) - Godzilla fights every major monster in this one. One of the most fun action films I have ever seen, very weird Shin Godzilla (2016) - An incredible new take on Godzilla. Fantastic film.

When I watched this as child, I understood as a child, I thought "boobies" like a child; but when I became a man, I understood that not all naked boobies are just out there for sex appeal. I could only find the dubbed version via prime. Was the subbed voice actor for Kusanagi also rather monotone/bored sounding? BTW I use hummas as a dip for Celery as part of my lunch.

No other anime makes me feel as dumb as Ghost in the Shell. The movie, but especially Stand Alone Complex. They use words and phrases that have no meaning to us and give no explanation, and sometimes no context. I hope you cover the Laughing Man arc of Stand Alone Complex at some point though. I think, if you all haven’t watched it already, it would really hit some key interests for you all: action, guns, dystopian futures, political intrigue, social commentary, ass shots, and cool sci-fi stuff.

I’ve owned Interstella 5555 on DVD since college (big Daft Punk fan, and old). I can’t wait to pop that baby into my PS5, what an excellent reason for a rewatch! When Nick announced it on the pod I said “whaaaaaat???” out loud. Great pick

Fun fact, the opening song “Making a Cyborg” in GitS is apparently a traditional wedding song that’s being sung in a style of a Bulgarian folk chant. The first part you can interpret different ways, the “marriage” or person and machine or the merging of the Major and puppet master at the end, which is neat. Not sure about the folk chant though, the composer might have just liked it? I know I like Nick’s version!

I was lucky to see this at AMC Theaters recently thanks to Anime Expo’s Cinema Nights(AXCN)!Thanks for influencing me to watch it, such an amazing movie! I watched it with a large bucket of popcorn in my Taylor Swift tin, and drinking a large coke out of a Taylor Swift cup. I plan to watch the Cowboy Bebop movie in January, and Paprika February.

If ya'll do Kaijune, check out the manga and soon to be anime Kaiju No. 8. I've been reading through it and it's amazing. I think you guys would really like it, especially Heather.

Cowboy Weebop

Ghost in the Shell broke my kid brain much like Akira did, and I’m so grateful to anime like these (and to you guys!) for breaking the boundaries of my perspective. Heather’s story about introducing her babysitter to anime makes me SO happy. There was a time when I felt just like this babysitter!!

Deandre Gibson

I know it’s the wrong podcast but Matt…super spider brothers was right there for the taking lol

Hey guys love this pod and followed Get Played since the beginning. (Awaiting the archived episodes) I recently went this past Sunday to watch Ghost in the Shell at its big screen re-release. Just as stunning and Bleak as I remember it. Keep up the good work!

I have to say as a black person your comment about black panther and the conflict within about killmonger not purposefully written as a heroic villain is completely off and almost offensive in its ignorance. He is explicitly written to be a sympathetic villain almost a hero, obviously you being white you obviously wouldn’t get it but maybe stick to your white lane next time and leave black media alone if you don’t have the media literacy to dissect it. love the pod just letting you know.
