I got really turned off by the number of repeated animation sequences in the first song, and unfortunately had trouble really engaging with the rest of this as a result. I'm really grateful that Get Anime'd exposes me to a wide variety of anime that I'd never watch on my own, but this one wasn't for me. Glad Nick and Matt loved it though, and I always look forward to what's next!

I can confirm that if your first time seeing this movie is on psychedelics, it’s the greatest thing you’ll ever experience. On the subject of music, I’m rewatching Samurai Champloo. Like it’s predecessor, Cowboy Bebop, as well as Interstella 5555, the curation and pairing of music to scenes in the show is spectacular. Whereas Bebop is “space outlaw jazz/opera,” Champloo is “samurai hip-hop” and a very fun and interesting anime that I’d recommend to anyone who enjoyed Bebop

Handsome Bane

OH. HELL. YEAH! I actually own the DVD. Discovery is the perfect album. I only have positive feelings for everything happening on this episode.

The Toei Cat is actually Pero from an anime film that came out in the the 60s called "The Wonderful World of Puss 'n Boots"... he more recently appeared in a 6 minute short film by Toei called "Dream". So theres the extra dose of the Toei cat if you genuinely wanted that! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_UCTULpQpo EDIT: Also, I bet Smurfs have pubes and no genitals.

Geoff Kriz

Of course you can call me “The Kriz” if you want. I’ve definitely been called worse. It’s just awesome that Matt pronounced my first and last name correct. As far as not having said anything nice about Heather and Matt… Heather and Matt are cool. 😁

This podcast used to be good. But the lack of Leno content is making me rethink my patronage. At the very least, there has to be an anime set in Burbank, right?

Holy shit. I’m behind on get anime’d so I didn’t know this was coming. I saw this for the first time the summer before my freshman year of high school and I vividly remember sitting on the floor of my basement of my parents old house watching this with my mouth agape. I had never seen anything like this and I was obsessed. I started playing music in high school because of Interstella 5555. Music and (not so indirectly) Interstella 5555 was how I made all of my friends in high school, which impacted my college choice, and where I ended up after school. This rules so hard that I would literally be an entirely different person if I had never seen it.

Discovery is one of the few perfect albums, in my opinion, and this is a solid sci-fi story to pair with it. I hadn’t seen it in about 15 years, and it’s a lot of fun to return to. Also, this album/film pair far outshine Daft Punk’s next album and film. “Electroma” was filmed and released as a companion to “Human After All.” Much like “Interstella,” it’s a sci-fi story, and features no dialogue, just music. Unlike “Interstella,” it’s live action and NONE OF THE MUSIC IS FROM DAFT PUNK. It’s about the Daft Punk robots, (not played by the band members, but actors in the costumes) trying to become human and is far more bleak. (They used footage from the end of it to announce their breakup.) It’s a bizarre, bold and fascinating watch, but I imagine I’ll watch “Interstella” 5555 more times before I watch “Electroma” again.

FLCL, and now Interstella? Now all we need is a Cowboy Bebop series and my entire Anime adolescence is fully checked off!

i think it was pretty cool of daft punk to invent anime

David Mucci

Since the idea of doing an anime arc has recently re-entered the convo, I’d again suggest the Arlong Park arc of One Piece! It’s probably the only complete arc that isn’t a whole show in and of itself lol, it’s episodes 31-44 of the anime and it’s wonderful.

Robot House

Nobody tell Matt about Dark Warrior duck I dont think he could take it

Daft punk is one of those bands that has been in the background of my life. When they hit the radio and MTV I was there for it. Everything I hear from them is a certified bop. I seriously thought that they made a certified anime music video from "La blue girl" because blue girl. You should do that... Ok nevermind. But the only thing that I think they should've done was a full orchestrated version of "one more time" to match the big action set piece of the anime. But "hold on, if love is the answer you're home."

I hopped on the patreon when you all mentioned you were doing FLCL and I've been really enjoying getting caught up. FLCL is one of my favorite shows of all time, Ghost in the Shell is probably in my top 5 movies of all time, and now you guys did this which is one of the only music video type things I actually like. It's been a blast revisiting these, especially since I mostly fell off anime about 10 years ago. I probably wouldn't have ever checked out the Eva rebuilds without the podcast. I just wanna say thanks!

The Daft Punk album Discovery is so meticulous, such mathematically beautifully constructed music, that this conceptually amorphous, goofy movie really suffers in comparison. It’s a neat novelty, fun vibes I guess, but I’d rather just listen to the music and do something else.

The first time I saw a snippet of Interstella 5555 was when I was kid, watching Australia’s seminal late night music program ‘Rage’. I was enthralled. The only anime I’d ever seen before was Pokémon and Sailor Moon - so discovering a NIGHT-TIME anime seemingly for ADULTS was truly mind blowing 😂

Dan

i asked my husband if he would save me first if the alien band i was in was kidnapped by an evil alien record company exec and he said “it depends”

clearplastichuman

It makes me so incredibly happy that you guys also thought that that guy looked like Steven Seagal. In my headcanon, that just IS steven seagal. I grew up with daft punk always around, loved the songs obviously and always saw clips of this movie on early youtube. Never actually knew it was a movie made by the robots themselves, because i always thought the youtube videos that i saw were edited by fans themselves. Im so glad to finally watch it, im a musician myself and i always enjoy when my favorite things get combined. Btw Nick, i dont know if youve checked this out already, but there is an jazz anime called "kids on the slope" you might love. As always, love u guys. I will come and save u once abducted by an old white guy, no worries

Must admit I got bored about half-way through this. I’m not a fan of Daft Punk, so listening to a whole hour of them didn’t really appeal to me.

Eddarrd88

Another Jay Leno joke! You guys hear about that Daft Punk music video movie, Interstella 5555? Yeah, apparently, they're so secretive, they're like the James Bonds of electronic music. I mean, they wear helmets all the time – I thought I was watching a DJ version of 'Spaceballs'! And the plot of the movie is like a musical 'E.T.' – these aliens get abducted, turned into a band, and then they're like, 'Phone home? Nah, let's drop a sick beat instead.' I guess even extraterrestrial beings appreciate a good bassline. But seriously, if Daft Punk ever decides to go interstellar, I hope they save a spot for me on their spaceship. I've got some killer dance moves that are out of this world!"

Interstella 5555 is really nostalgic for me! Discovering this movie together was a big bonding moment for me my best friend while we were in high school - 11 years later we are still close. Great choice Matt! Nick's right by the way - me and my partner once got stoned on edibles and watched this movie together. When it ended we didn't know what to do so we started it over and immediately watched it through a second time!

Given Nick’s passion for Blue Giant, I’d highly recommend Kids on The Slope/Sakamichi no Apollon which was a great series from 10 years ago or so, 12 eps, about jazz in the 60’s, also blends rotoscoped animation and directed by Shinichiro Watanabe of Cowboy Bebop, etc. and composed by Yoko Kanno and it explores and performs known jazz songs. I haven’t revisited it in a long time, though occasionally rewatch a couple of the performance scenes as really enjoy them. Love the OP too: https://youtu.be/MTw9tYs5bEQ?si=tqmTlEBlFltsEdkw

A bit off-topic but I just started watching Scott Pilgrim Takes Off and firstly, I think y'all would love this series since it's an anime comedy heavily inspired by videogames. And secondly, it has some Rebuild of Evangelion vibes in the sense that this "reboot" is creatively led by the original creator who appears to be using this new series as a way to comment and reflect on the original story. Not sure how common this is or how I feel about this style of reboots, but I've found both of these examples really interesting so far! (even if I didn't love the Rebuilds)

Veronica Svärd

I still remember watching all of Interstella along with a handful of Gorillaz music videos late night Toonami's Midnight Run waaaaaay back in 2001. I was 11, and it was my first exposure to both bands (outside of radio air play). Years later, both bands are still favorites.

Nugz

In the same vein of anime+music videos, if you're into this kinda thing I'd recommend Sound & Fury on Netflix. It's a video accompaniment to one of Sturgill Simpon's albums and kicks ass. Matt - it's the same director/animation studio that did Batman Ninja 😁
