Jay Leno Voice "Did you guys catch the finale of the anime 'Pluto'? Yeah, it's got more twists and turns than my GPS on a road trip. I mean, it's like they packed in enough drama to power a soap opera for a decade. There's political intrigue, robot existential crises, and even a teddy bear with a sinister agenda. And here I thought my old Teddy Ruxpin was just good for bedtime stories. But hey, at least now I know to keep an eye on my plush toys. You never know when they might be plotting world domination!"

I'm so excited to watch Tekken along with y'all. That movie is supposed to be a wretched pile. It also has invisible dinosaurs, I think?

I'm a little disappointed with the whole theme of the final episode being about how nothing good ever comes from hate. It's like they haven't even heard of Korn.

I thought it was impressive when Heather stayed in character and did 'snake style' for a whole episode of Get Played, but that's nothing compared to Nick staying in character as a robot for all of these episodes discussing Pluto I understand the narrative need of Gesicht’s death, but for me the show really lost something once he was gone, though overall I still liked the show, just not as much as I had for the first 6 episodes. Also I love that the weather robot with the Hey Arnold shaped head was called Arnold.

David Mucci

I enjoyed this show overall. I think the repetition of the theme of hatred felt a little clunky to me, though. Like, I swear several characters basically quoted Maria from the end of West Side Story, “now I can kill because now I have hate!” Which kind of works in a musical. Not sure it worked for me in a dramatic, heady sci-fi story.

Also there are so many good puns for the comments section for Tekken, like: Talkin' Tekken Tekken it to the streets Tek Talk (like Ted Talk, but maybe it's not that good seeing as I feel the need to explain it) Look Who's Tekken Too Tekken Points

The East Blue Arc that the listener is suggesting is a great sample size to determine whether One Piece is for you! It's also the same period covered by the first season of the Netflix show.

I overall really enjoyed this show, but am glad to have watched it over the course of 8 weeks; this would have been a tough one to binge. Also, I thought it was funny that as soon as I finished this show all about AI becoming so advanced that it achieves humanity, Netflix’s stupid algorithm suggested Breaking Bad, proving that we have a long way to go until Pluto becomes a reality.

oh we doing Shōgun now right?

Really enjoyed Pluto, read the manga and was great to watch along with ya’ll. Like Nick, I liked the manga more. A new “The Manga Was Better” segment? The OnePiece bit is killing me, death by 1000 heartbreaks. I have to stop having hope when Ash choose’s Nick. Super excited y’all are watching Solo Leveling, I’m also watching along. Loved the manga so much, once I caught up to the weekly release I had to go find the original fan translated web novel. A new achievement in the depth of my weebdom. Thanks for letting us know about Delicious, Matt, it’s delightful.

I loved how they drew Atom’s “I’ve seen some shit” look when he wakes up. Then take it back to normal after the snail snaps him out of it. Overall I really enjoyed this one. Bit heavy, bit long, but the themes really stuck with me.

EGAD

I think it needs to be said, that guys brother was a real piece of shit.

I really wish the finale was better. I loved the first episode and really enjoyed 2-7 because it felt like it was leading up to something big, but the finale was just kind of alright. I would give the pilot a 10/10 and the rest of the series a solid 7.5. If you want a show that only gets better as it goes, consider Puella Magi Madoka Magica! It’s a deconstruction of the magical girl genre with lesbians and really cool animation! What more could you ask for?

Michael Pemulis

The first four episodes did a good job of setting up the mystery and introducing all the important characters, and I really enjoyed them. My enthusiasm lessened with each following episode, ending with a lackluster and prolonged finale. Like so many series, I think it would've benefited by cutting about 30% of the fat. And maybe by adding 100% more chainsaw men.

BensDecoy

I agree that Pluto as a series may not reach the level of masterpiece, which is disappointing because I think it’s maybe an editing pass and a little nicer animation in points away from getting there, but I disagree that an anime has to achieve that level in order to be something that everyone, including people who don’t normally like anime, should watch. That “normally dislike anime” barrier isn’t breached by sheer quality but by a work having as little Anime Bullshit as possible. I can’t recall any teenagers in Playboy bunny outfits groping each other in Pluto so it makes the list.

nick will watch a documentary on japanese toilets before watching one episode of one piece... alright i see how it is...

I enjoyed the show. I'm surprised that you didn't mention during the scene when all the robots were with their family or doing what they loved and saying "Atom" that Brando wasn't at the table with his family. All other robots were in their own space they were remembering/picturing, but Brando was a picture while his wife was dealing with their children. Even in the afterlife he's an absentee father. Also this short video makes me think of gesicht's kid learning to walk. https://www.reddit.com/r/interestingasfuck/comments/1b14myw/robot_playing_football_whos_ready_for_robosports/ I'd like to belive that he was kicking his child down while it was learning to walk.

the funny iron chef chairman guy was the Japanese voice of the bad guy in Pokémon the movie 2000 lol

Watching Pluto weekly really made me miss a standard opening and closing title songs and it got me thinking, would Get Anime’d be open to doing a segment? Maybe do a game about guessing if a anime song is OP(opening song) or ED(ending song), just going off the vibes of the song? There is some really awesome anime music that I would love to know what y’all think of it.

eat the electric rat ash you can do it

really unimpressed with the action sequences a lot of the airborne fight scenes default to looking like two kids battling in the dark with fourth of July sparklers. also, I was a bit confused - did gesicht ask to have his and his wife's memory wiped so they don't have to suffer remembering their child, RoBitA? Or did it get wiped by his superiors to cover up Gesicht murdering that one piece of shit brother? overall I give the series a 7/10 not enough piece of shit brothers

I think it had a few pacing problems, but overall I enjoyed this show. Plus, the ending was at least better than either of the Evangelion endings which pretty much ruined that show for me…

Zack Tennenhouse

This show was not it. It had its moments, and the themes were intriguing - it just never really managed to capitalize on that potential. I really liked the episode with the dog, and outside of that I was just waiting for it to end. Solo Leveling, however, was a great rec. I watched the first 3 episodes on the couch and then once the premise revealed itself I realized this could be the best gym anime since One Punch Man. Been putting in some miles on the bike with my boy Jinwoo ever since.

I wanted to love this show and was all the way into it up until Gesicht's death. For me, the show ended then, and everything after that was an epilogue. After Gesicht's death, the whole show is one giant mess of an ending in need of a protagonist to help guide us through it. It felt like if you were really into the legacy of Astro Boy and followed all the media around it, you'd be really hyped for Atom's return and seeing him in action, but I'm not a part of that fan community (yet), and I enjoyed this show as a stylish noir with an interesting mystery to explore. Once that was gone, I was done. I also had some issues with the show's depictions of robots, as I didn't really "believe" they were robots but more of an interpretation of what robotics and AI actually are. Did I miss evidence early on that robots had had tear ducts installed in their bodies, or was that just a sudden development in the storyline? Which leads to another issue of waiting until far too late into the story to introduce new ideas like implanting a human consciousness into a robot body, or the introduction of Edenstone as a major location. For a show as dense as this, these are missed opportunities to bring in early on so we aren't given new concepts way too late into the third act. On a positive note, I will say that all of the robots death scenes were some of the most powerful I've eve seen, and I was honestly moved by them in ways I never expected. As a father, Brando's hit most powerfully in seeing how he tried to transmit important information, but in his final moments, all he could bring up were images of his family. That is one of the strongest and most unique ways I've ever seen fatherhood depicted. It may not have stuck the landing, but when the show hits, it hits hard in the right places.

Heather, Thank you so much for sharing Evangelion with me. Today, I started chanting “Don’t run away” over and over again. I was really scared but I got through it. I thought “if I could be as brave as Heather, I can do this.” And I did it. You made my day better!

Craig K

Pluto falls in the same category as Lycoris Recoil and Blue Lock for me as shows covered on the podcast that I initially thought were incredible, but then they all ended up being just okay to me because they didn’t stick the landing. It is absolutely insane how rushed the last episode felt jumping from beat to beat and omitting key points from the manga. This show was so long and so glacially paced they had SO MANY chances to get the story right

Deacon Raid

I agree that the last episode didn’t quite stick the landing. It’s pretty crazy that Gesicht is only in like 6 pages of the original Astroboy story that was adapted into the manga/anime since he seems to be so much of the core of this story. Does ACAB include Gesicht?

Alex Chosid

My thoughts on this show overall are decidedly mixed. I haven’t read the manga, but I wonder whether a devotion to a beloved entry in a serialized format hurts this show. The show has deeply interesting things to say: the meditations on what it means to live and what we - both humans and robots - owe each other, generally hit perfectly. The emotional beats, too, worked great: finally seeing Gesicht’s memories of his child and the events that followed were deeply affecting. But the show is bogged down by extremely slow pacing, overly long episodes, and extremely repetitive dialogue. Did you know a lot of this is about hatred? Again, I assume it’s because the source material is so beloved, but a more aggressive editing knife could’ve taken this show from “interesting and a bit flawed” to “great.” Also the bear shit was kind of dumb. And Pluto was a tragic figure, but we actually “met” him too late in the show for his final glow up to feel good after he murdered so many rad bots.

If you’re still looking for suggestions on future shows to cover I highly recommend the first arc of Hunter X Hunter (2011), episode 1-25. I believe it’s required viewing for anyone who is getting into anime. The tone is definitely lighter than your last few shows and I think you’ll all really enjoy it!
