Greetings Actual Heroes!

The plan with the monthly video exclusive for Actualol Heroes (and above) was to talk about games that I've chosen to get rid of over the years, and suggest alternatives to those games. Like this video: https://youtu.be/a8sxpMzvyQc

I've had some feedback from viewers and Patrons that they're not a fan of this series - presumably because it takes a negative viewpoint on most of the games. I wanted to take that feedback on board and offer you an opportunity to vote on whether I continue making those videos, or opt for something else.

As to what the alternative is - that is currently undetermined. I didn't want to confuse the poll by having loads of options. The question is simply: should I stick with the Left My Collection videos, or should I try something else.

Possible ideas for that video include:

1. The reverse of that video. Talking about three/four games each month that I have kept in my collection over the years and why. More positive, more useful.

2. An unboxing montage of all the games that I've received/bought that month, similar to the ones Tom Vasel's being doing lately. Not going into tedious detail, but just having a quick look at each game.

3. Shag, Marry, Kill (ignore silly title) - A video that looks at three different games. An upcoming game I'm excited about. A classic from my collection that I love. And one I decided to get rid of.

If you have any better ideas for this, please comment below. Bear in mind that all reviews and Top 10s will never be made exclusive, as it's important to keep reaching new gamers and not keep them from loyal viewers who aren't patrons.

As an aside, it is possible that in the future I may be able to make more than one of these videos every month, especially as the Patreon continues to grow and I can commit more time to Actualol.

Yours,

Actual Jon

I like 'The Games that Have Left my Collection' series *because* they reveal negatives about games. It's nice to know that I'm not the only one who got Cosmic Encounter on the basis that it's Tom Vasel's favourite game but couldn't get into it. Or that Betrayal is a disappointing game and that there should be more games that use its horror-traitor theme. Not enough reviewers give bad reviews. Maybe those legendary occasions during which Tom Vasel shits on Vasco Da Gama and others... but most reviewers prefer not to review games they don't like at all. If over-negativity is a concern, you can add in certain reasons why people might actually like the game, along with criticism and explanation for why the game left your collection.

Zack Braun

To add to Abraham's comment, one nice thing about a "left my collection" series is that it highlights changes in the board game world. Game mechanics are often so time dependent. What felt revolutionary 5 years ago, might have been refined and improved upon in newer games. Edit: The series doesn't have to be approached from a negative stance. It isn't that the game is bad, it is just that you or the world has changed in some way.

I voted to keep this particular series. The only concern I could see is that negativity might not be encouraging to new people, so if this was available to everyone I might agree, but this content is locked away for patrons. Presumably the people here are here to keep you going on your main channel and not just because of the exclusive content. It is not as if you are trashing the games. I liked it because it was kind of a "If you like this, try this" opportunity for me, and you are very clearly framing your opinion as "This is why this game didn't work for *me*". If it must change, I am actually quite intrigued by the "Shag, marry, kill" idea, because I am without a doubt cult of the new, and having the look forward, seeing what's coming in, and seeing what's going out hits all the bases. I am also the type of person who doesn't feel like I need exclusive content at all to remain a patron though, so if you think a change will be a better incentive for new sponsors, go for it!

I think pointing out games that you wound up not keeping is a good thing to hear especially for those who might have similar tastes in games. But an entire video pointing out flaws in games might (as you said) be a bit too much negativity. Maybe just a few lines about why the game didn't work out for you (keeping the alternative suggestion part which I think is helpful) and then offset that with a game that you did keep. An alternative is to discuss the negatives in a comedic way - bad news in a good way kind of thing - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ke_UP5Hfz8g

I quite liked the current topic. I know I'm going to have to pare down my collection at some point (new to the hobby excitement means I have a load of games, and I'm going to need to free up space for new games at some point). It's interesting to watch someone talk through what considerations they made when deciding which games didn't make the cut for them. It doesn't even have to be particularly negative - I'll probably end up getting rid of one game because I bought a sequel which does all of the same with some extra bits which improve things.

Michael Weber

I like the "leaving my collection" series. It shows the advancements in our hobby and your personal development as a gamer. I don't perceive the reports on the games you tossed out as negative in themselves as you contrast the games with their replacements.

Azhar Khan

I like the "leaving my collection" series as well. Sometimes as gamers, we tend to collect a lot of games due to glowing reviews from people whose tastes align with you, but they may / may not hit the table. Sometimes these videos help in reassessing some of the games, and also to see if you already have good alternatives to those games.

Andrew K.

I voted for 'something else' because I'd like a more varied mix, even though I liked both "leaving my collection" videos and think they're interesting discussions. Maybe you could mix "leaving my collection" with "shag, marry, kill" ones or some other new ideas, depending on your whim. (Unrelated: I wouldn't mind if the Patreon-exclusive videos became public after a while, maybe 1 month or so. I'm happy to support your channel's content but don't need to keep everything to myself.)

Sharon Laubach

I'm not sure I have much to add beyond the excellent points above, but just to add another voice: I also appreciate the insight into your thought process as you culled games from your collection (something I'll be needing to start to do soon), and I especially enjoy seeing the alternative games you decided to keep, and why--what they do better than the other game, how they fit your current tastes better. I also like the "Shag, Marry, Kill" idea, since it covers similar ground, while also illuminating why you kept the 'classic' game, and what excites you about the new one--I'd still want the 'killed game X' segment to keep the 'X-killer' alternative suggestions.

Douglas Brown

This video series idea is great, but I think I speak for many fans (and certainly for my daughter who was determined that we back you) when I say what we really want are more of the in-depth character videos which nobody does as well as you. that's what we're looking for! :)

Agnieszka Czepulis-Rastenis

I like the games that left my collection. It's a bit different, plus then you can offer alternative to those games that stayed in your collection. Especially if they're going to be exclusive. You don't want to keep the really good stuff just for Patreon people, because you might be missing out on potential viewers and supporters, by restricting what you post as widely accessible.

Jez Overton

I voted to keep it. So many Board Game pundits focus entirely on the positive and although I'm not knocking them, it's good to have a different viewpoint. I enjoy all three games in video two, but it was useful to hear why you didn't like them. It helps me to choose the right game for a group.

John Rausch

I like the "Left My Collection" concept because it's unique for board game reviewers and takes a longer view of owning a game. And you're not being negative the whole time, you're offering alternative games that you like better. It also helps new gamers get a rare critique of popular games. I wish I had seen critiquing reviews of Small World and King of Tokyo before buying them. And some games are fun the first few times, then become boring over time. This happened to me with Dixit. That said, I would absolutely recommend balancing "Left My Collection" with "Never Leaving My Collection" or something like that.

Sam

I really like the current series. Keep it up! :)

Pierrefr

I like those videos. Mostly because for one we get to hear about what's wrong with a game instead of "OMG look at the shiny new thing go get it!!!!!!". I learn much more about a game when I hear what doesn't work about it than the contrary. On the other hand I really like the idea of the shag, marry and kill video. So I voted for something else hoping that you could alternate between the two kinds. Another thing noted by someone else. Make those videos available to everybody after a month, everybody deserves to see those videos.

Lev Dukhovny

I think critical point of view in "what left my collection" is actually what makes it much more unique and useful. Most of the reviewers usually try to butter it up or just sticking to the games they like. And if it makes people a little bit angry then it probably works. In my opinion only thing you should cut is "i don't recommend getting this game" part. That's probably what triggers a lot of people. P.S. I'm not sure this pole is fair. "What left" is against like four ideas. If some people expect exact idea to be used and it will be something else they'll probably be as displeased as from "What left".

Ted Morris

I like the "what left my collection" video. It's one of the more unique bits of content out there. I'm not a fan of unboxing videos, just one of those things I've never understood the appeal of. That being said, please go with your gut as you've done with the rest of your content!

Actualol

Good point, I will try and make that clearer. As proven by the comments, I'm in the minority with Dixit - so it's very much me and not the game. And for games like Fuse or Wok Star, I've always enjoyed them but just feel like my time with them is done and I'd rather move on. I'll focus more on that in future videos.

Actualol

It's so hard to know. I'd love to have a video that best attracts new patrons, but if it's very popular it's best place is probably on the channel (non-exclusive) so that it can consistently attract new viewers.

Actualol

One of the reasons I started the series was because I recently moved flat and went through a process of playing older games and making decisions on them - I find it an interesting decision. If I lived in a massive house, I'd be keeping half of these games.

Actualol

I 100% agree. Rest assured that the focus is on those types of videos. They just take a while to make, and I wanted to talk about this in the meantime.

Actualol

Do you mean make the "Shag, Marry, Kill" videos available to everyone after a month?

Actualol

Thank you everyone for your feedback! It's obviously divided opinion, but it's been interesting reading your thoughts and seeing the result of the poll. Since the poll has swung towards keeping the Left My Collection series, that's what will happen. It was nice to read that a good deal of you have enjoyed it. But for those who haven't, I'm definitely going to be considering other videos. Since I've only just got back to making regular videos, I want things to settle back down and see what time I have before promising anything. But I hope to be able to produce another one of the video ideas regularly as well. And I want to make something 100% clear - videos with Actualol characters are still my top priority. I know we're talking a lot about VLOGs, but I'm working on the next Top 10 and very excited to keep making those videos that make Actualol unique.

Amanda

Late to the party but oh well I like the left my collection especially when you include a similar game that stayed.

Maria LoCastro

That is ultimately why I tend not to like or care about exclusives. By their nature they exclude, which in itself can make people unhappy, and growing the audience as a whole will also grow the patreon. We are contributing because we like you and your content. Awesome to be able to interact and give feedback, but you've been doing a great job so far.

Pierrefr

I mean any "patreon" content. I truly hate kickstarter exclusives and the patreon content feels that way. I know I'm probably not in the majority here so it might not happen but if I backed you it's because your have a great creative and funny mind. Having you keep doing what you're doing is what my patronage is about. And I don't see why that content should be kept away from anybody. So having a preview of the content feels that it is a good way to reconcile my position and the position of people who want something special because they are a patron. Don't know if it makes sense or not :D.
