Wow. I know it's not really your style but this feels like it could easily have multiple endings. One ending would be the "ha ha no" Bernice becomes a bimbo sure... But honestly after seeing such a wholesome backstory I feel bad for Byland...I'd love to see Bernice's authentic(?) confession be more then just a cop out too. What if she means it on some level? And just has been to busy working the case to try and get back in touch with him? If the power of love snapped Byland out of it and kept Bernice from being bimbofied then whilst a pyrrhic victory it would still be an achievement. And Byland could have more of a character. Imagine if we find out he's been in a "trance" for all of these years and Bernice snaps him out of it! The possibilities are countless from there! Or the super bad ending where Bernice snaps him out of it and grabs the book, only for the book to corrupt her even worse then it did him. I honestly can't say I really prefer any of these endings over the other. I'd love to see multiple ways this could pan out. But if I HAD to choose then I hope Bernice is being authentic and the power of love saves the day. It'd be full circle from the backstory and would be a really cute bow to tie on this story.

Also I'm glad that Bernice had the same train of thought as me. That surely Byland isn't actually this petty but has been controlled/brainwashed to be like this. I'm fully believing that's what happened cause he seemed like such a a nice guy in the flashback I refuse to think he changed so much willingly. I hope she can free him from the book's influence!
