Hey everyone. I'm still deep in the editing of this video. It's awkward to put together but I'm blasting through it pretty quickly now.

Feel free to suggest what I should display when the video fades to white at the end. Haven't made my mind up yet!

Notation Must Die (First 10 Minutes)

Hello

Comments

eSyr

Our Lord and Saviour Jankman, of course.

Anschel Schaffer-Cohen

Very excited for the full video. I also love that you intentionally butchered the old English spelling but then made a careful effort with the French.

What comes after the white screen should simply be a nod to the first alphabet used, and how much it means to us now. Linear-A. It means ... nothing now. Did not having an alphabet deter humans from doing anything? No. Does a lack of musical notation deter humans from making music? Again, no. A lack of notation has never stopped music, as much as a lack of alphabet has stopped poetry or story. A lack of notation has stopped the propagation of music or story. If it wasn't written down, preferably on stone, it was definitely forgotten. Many centuries ago there was a fierce battle in what is now the Tollense valley, involving some 4000 people about 15,000 years ago. Who were they? What were they going on about? No idea. They're dead, all nameless. The songs are lost, and all is forgotten. So the musically illiterate claim that A, B, C, D, E, F, and G are too hard to memorize. That's their choice, and they are free to be ignorant, even though those are the first seven letters of European alphabet. "The man who does not read has no advantage over the man who cannot read," quipped Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain). It is only by literacy, and continually reading, that we enhance our understanding, and thus our personal ability.

Fantastic opening and transition that has me pumped for the whole video. Is the closing song one of yours? It's a banger! And what a treat to see the tweet by the video game man and its extremely Melodics Level 3 energy. Suggest fading up on a printed copy of a Beethoven sonata notated in FL Studio piano roll bulging off the music desk of a nice grand.

One editing detail. I watched twice and the bit at 7:11 where you say "because ONE" could be clearer. I understood what it meant only after the pink targets counting off the black squares K1-8. I think a pink target momentarily appearing on K1 when you say "ONE" would make it clearer from the start. Cheers!

Wow, at around 5 minutes I caught myself thinking "why's he still talking about chess", but by the end I totally got your point and I'm thrilled to see the full video. I'd probably need just as long to explain to an outsider why IT people cannot stop arguing over programming languages.

I've been looking at the notation discourse for the past few months and I hope that this video will give me some vindication (or at least provide me with interesting counterarguments.) My take on this whole debacle is that for Western tonal music there is no question that standard notation is the best system for reading and deciphering music. There is no other system that crams as much relevant musical information into as small of a space without sacrificing readability. Rhythms are clear, accidentals stick out like a sore thumb, it's easy to see the melodic contour of a line, and independent voices can be notated clearly. Experienced users can play simpler standard notation music in real time and as far as I've seen it takes fewer repetitions and less time to memorize music from standard notation. RANT ALERT: Novice and intermediate guitarists who play in certain styles may find tablature easier to understand at first, but the people who are playing the most complex guitar music (classical and jazz guitarists) tend to prefer standard notation. Hunkering down and learning to play from standard notation is probably worth it for any guitarist who is seriously about writing music. For whatever reason, programmers and computer science majors tend to love piano roll, but it's even worse than tablature. It has its uses in areas of music production or maybe as a pedagogical tool to build basic music literacy for beginners but outside of that it's just awful. It's has similar weaknesses to tablature as far as relevant harmonic and melodic information are concerned but it gets even worse. The rhythms are more difficult to decipher at a glance, sightreading is nigh impossible, and it takes up to 4 times as many repetitions to memorize the music compared to standard notation.

Ok I really love how you have titled this video. Especially regarding all the work you've been doing in... notation. I can feel something in it, like you've spent weeks figuring out the exact shape of a quaver's flag only to scrap it and start over. I would be saying to myself 'notation must die' at that point too.

Chris F.S.

Something related to the next line of the script. Either that or pick your favourite "threatening music notation" example.

Those complaints about notation feel to me as an excuse to not have to put effort into learning to play music, somewhat like the endless parade of sneaky apps that promise the user instant admirable musicianship (subscribe now for €29.99 / month) because of the innovative and uniquely intuitive interface (no note reading / experience / musicality required!) The effort of learning to read notation is absolutely trivial compared to learning to play an instrument and develop yourself musically. It’s just a prerequisite you pick up as you begin. Maybe the standard notation isn’t the best possible system, but it’s the one we have and it works. Even serious alternatives like Klavarskribo struggle in the periphery. Zappa’s advice to the whiners: shut up and play your guitar. And learn to read notation, for crying out loud 😉

It's move 7. This is one of the great benefits of releasing material early on Patreon.

Just let it be white and tranquil, ending with a friendly finger coming in for a "boop"

Ljova

awww this is gonna be good! i'm going to look forward to this.

This is amazing so far. How about a faded out (almost like a watermark) of Jankman on a whiteboard noting chess moves in a game between Shostakovich and Terpsichore, but with music notes, and then Sibelius crashes.

Adam Spiers

I have two relevant anecdotes to share which may be of amusement, although probably not useful: 1. Even the current greatest chess player in the world and chess.com can't agree on nuances of modern algebraic notation: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/1lITdz5r64s 2. Barak and I designed a way to notate chess via chord progressions: https://www.instagram.com/p/CeB8X4YFYTs/ I was particularly proud of the idea to use negative harmony as a way of black mirroring white's moves, but that just shows what a perverted nerd I am.

Adam Spiers

Which one? I'm clearly biased, but I could imagine both giving viewers a chuckle, even if only through marvelling at the levels of inane nerdery involved. BTW did you spot the pun(chline) at the checkmate? ;-p

Heads up, there seems to be a missing keyframe for the black king around 2:22. It's sort of drifting around weirdly, then returns to what seems the correct place.
