No animated show will ever be made again with Eva's level of authenticity and insight into the authors troubled mind. What you are witnessing is a genius man struggling to find a way to keep himself from commiting suicide, and using an anime production to vent out all of his fears and shortcomings.

It also may or may not be a warning about our rulers and the future of humanity in reality. People like to claim because of one quote that the Christian/Judeo symbolism was put in for meaningless aesthetics, but anyone with half a brain cell knows that isn't true. Anno probably said that in order to seperate himself from what is an incredibly personal story that he could have never imagined would become an international sensation.

Hideaki Ano -- basically an otaku and a god-damn genius at story telling -- did get very interested in Freudian psychoanalysis, which is quite obvious throughout NGE. I think of it as the first (and by many accounts the most successful) anime to look at the inside of people's heads and their motivations for being who they are, rather than just at battles, politicial systems, and external/family hardships (like e.g., Gundam, or The Legend of the Galactic Heroes. Puella Magi Madoka Magica is often compared to NGE. I'd say PMMM is more well lapidated, more polished, like a shiny... soul gem. Whereas NGE is more of a brute diamond, unpolished, rough around the edges, with flaws here and there... but which leaves just as deep an impact in the viewer, if you can forgive these flaws. Because Hideaki thought he was misunderstood (he even got death threats after the end of the TV show), he went on retelling this story to show what it is he actually had meant to say. Hence The End of Evangelion the movie, which can be trippy as all hell. More recently, he again told this story (now from a more mature perspective, and offering closure to all those who had watched previous incarnations) in the (polemic) Re-Birth series. I hope you guys will watch all that. It's well worth it.

Omg. I'm so happy. It's so incredibly rare for anyone new to react to this

The thing that will be hard for us to get across, is how much this anime inspired everything after. It's up there with DBZ and Sailor Moon with defining a genre
