Asuka says "kanji," which was translated as "Chinese characters." Kanji originated from Chinese, though Japanese did go on to invent some unique kanji of its own.

I was about to write the same thing. Perhaps they hesitated over how to translate “漢字（Kanji）” into English, but decided that “Kanji” might be too obscure. However, the result was that including the word “China” seems to have caused confusion.
