Hello Humans,

Exciting news. I’m hosting my first ever live debate on YouTube this Tuesday (27th).

The question is simple but the answers are complex:

Is AI killing the music industry?

Joining me are two artists I really respect, who could not be further apart on this.

🥁 Anna Mylee (Crimson Veil / Dorja / Exometry)An educator, expert drummer, and fierce advocate for human-made music. Anna believes AI has no place in creative tasks and that its rise poses a genuine threat to musicians, creativity, and the soul of the industry.

💻 ExtizeAn European based artist, creating high-energy, dance and techno-driven live shows (you might've seen him on the Crimson Veil tour with Combichrist?). Extize actively uses AI as part of his creative process and sees it as a powerful, exciting tool rather than something to fear.

I’ll be hosting, keeping the debate from bubbling over (hopefully 😅), and adding your questions into the discussion.

I’d love to know:– Are you excited by AI, terrified by it, or somewhere in between?– Where do you personally draw the line?– Do you feel pressure to use it… or pressure not to?

If you can’t make it live, I’ll share the replay, but if you can, I’d really love you there as I think this is gonna be some juicy content.

🗓 Tuesday 27th⏰ 8pm UK📍 Live on YouTube

Let me know your questions! Patrons get first dibs on asking Anna & Extize about this complex and high fascinating issue...

See you ringside.

Love,

Mishkin

I'll be there. Twagging off a practice night, but they don't need me 🙂

I won't be able to join live, but will watch later! With AI in art and in general, I am in terrified camp. I fear AI will make life harder and harder for creative people, because many businesses would prefer to work with AI rather than with human artists. At my work as a software developer, I am using AI every day. It's not making my job any more exciting, personally. I would happily live in a universe where 2020s AI boom never happened. I try to use it sparingly, mainly as a enhanced Google / Stack Overflow; but there is enormous pressure to use it more (with more sophisticated tools like Cursor / Claude Code). These LLM-based tools became so much smarter over last two years, I think I just cannot stay productive without them (compared to my colleagues). I don't use AI when I'm writing my own music (what I do as a hobby), the only thing I sometimes ask ChatGPT to give me a few synonyms or rhymes to a particular English word, for writing lyrics.

Excellent comment Mishmish - I can see how much pressure must be on you to use the AI as a developer... I don't know much about other industries but I know it's affecting everyone everywhere. I use it very sparingly, to check my writing occasionally or help with music marketing but yeah, I find it very frustrating on many levels and my main complaint is that the content has pretty much been stolen which feels so wrong for all creatives... I'm excited to hear what Anna and Extize have to say! I'll post the catch up as soon as it's out

– Are you excited by AI, terrified by it, or somewhere in between? - Not terrified, but i hate it. I think its ruining the human psyche and social functioning on many levels. – Where do you personally draw the line? - I engage as little as possible with AI – Do you feel pressure to use it… or pressure not to? - Pressure yes, but i refuse. Society seems to include AI in as much as possible these days. I'm also required to use AI on one of my exams this semester. This mostly applies to LLMs, which is technically not even true AI, but usually what people refer to when talking about AI. I've seen some very promising use of true AI within research projects i've advised on, mainly around using machine learning and neural networks to help process genetic and chemical information to potentially develop blood tests for mental illnesses, and i think there's great potential in these things if managed properly. However, this is wildly different from the common use of AI. Question for Extize: What are your thoughts on the ethical consequenses of your use of AI in music production? including environmental implications due to power consumption, building of data centers negatively affecting communities, and the privacy issues regarding corporate entities being granted access to any input you make to the AI.

Thanks Halvor!! These are deeply brilliant points. I will raise this question with Extize

Thank you! Love it when british people call my reflections brilliant, it makes me feel extra special. Bonus question: did you ever have to sneeze in the midst of a live performance? How did you handle it and how could AI have helped you to handle it differently?
