I highly recommend watching Korean movie The Throne to learn about the story of King Yeongjo(San's grandfather) and Crown Prince Sado(San's father). There are many opinions about how Sado “went crazy”, and the movie focuses on his toxic relationship with his father. It is known as the greatest tragedy in Joseon history, and you'll have a much better understanding of complexity of grandpa king and San's relationship. And the movie is also very good!
