For him it's probably harsh enough to not have that ego actively fed by Sal anymore. Sal's betrayal already hurts, but maybe at least that's still in line with what Geoff knows of Sal - juuust enough for his brain to go "okay, so I'm not special, but neither is anyone else!" But Sal deciding to change and put in effort out of love for someone else? Battam being that special person that Geoff could never be? For such a big ego, that must be absolutely unbearable! So... it can't be true. Mustn't be true. And if it is, then... then Geoff can't let it be.
