One of the more fun aspects of the Polish Hussars was that they were organized like a business. Rather like English armies of the 14th/15th century. The rotmizter, the commander of a Hussar 'Chorągiew' lit 'banner' and roughly equivalent to a 'regiment' was the owner of a contract to provide so many 'Companions' or towarzysz for service to the crown. And each towarzysz was in turn subcontracted to provide between two and 5 other riders and between one and three hired servants a unit. The result of this recruitment method, and Poland's geographic location meant you could plausibly have a poczet- the towarzyz's unit, functionally identical to the Anglo-French 'lance'- that contained two hussars-and a German Reiter- and a harqubesier or carbiner-and a horse archer. The Lithuanian portion of the Hussar's still had horse archers in declining numbers over time, but into the 17th century and so did Polish banners raised along Polands eastern borders. While on the west border with the German states, German mercenaries were easy to hire and Polish equestrians could also buy their armor and pistols to copy them. Some really really fun combinations could be put together. This was one of those rare times and places when war actually kind of resembled a RPG.

The Polish Hussars were key figures in preventing a Turkish invasion of Austria. They were the force that tipped the tide and successfully broke the Siege of Vienna in 1683.
