I just acknowledged there's a cat sitting on the goddess's head.

I keep noticing a small mole or freckle on the Minoan woman’s left breast. At the risk of being forward, would it be safe to assume that this is an Ironlily self portrait? If so, it’s an adorable Easter egg.🥰

Wait... That was a cat on the Minoan snake goddess's head the whole time?! I could never tell what it was and for years figured it was a weird headdress.

Everyone should walk around with a cat on their head. It's all the rage in Crete this season.....

Henry Walker

Yup, I have seen that statue multiple times, never figured it for a cat. Then again considering the cat and its position in many mythologies and religions, I am not surprised.

Henry Walker

Yes, do give us more from the Classical Period. Show the world that our standards are not that "established".

So my Dad was an archaeologist, we often got to go behind the scenes at various museums cause he knew people who worked there. Yes this was as cool as it sounded, however I recall specifically something about the Minoans. I think it was this statue but that would be impossible as the memory is in London and I'm fairly sure this is in Greece where it belongs. I remember being blown away by this complex ancient society that just... went! I spent hours staring at the recreations of the bull leaping and their temples, I'm fairly sure the backing was green. I digress, this is excellent work as always Lily!

I recently had some thought about the Minoan women showing that way could be some kind of season or festival wearing.🤔

Anyone familiar with the "Earthsong" books by Mary Mackey? They can be a little . . . rough. But this puts me in mind of it.

No sorry I was waffling a bit, no the area the exhibits and murals was mounted was like a green backing which peeked through the missing chunks. I remember the Middle eastern stuff better just cause that was Dad's area but the Minoan stuff stuck with me for a number of reasons!

Henry Walker

From my meagre research into the subject, the tops which expose the breasts were not festival wearing, but standard. Obviously, those which are of a more decorated kind were intended for festivals, but in general, the tops as you have displayed them were for general wear, something about different standards, the body being beautiful, nudity not being immediately sexual and all.

Egypt and Crete even more related than we thought. Contributed to each others art, and both respected cats. I just thought of something else. Cats eat snakes. They are one of the few animals that have better reflexes than snakes and can usually beat a snake even it the snake initiates the attack. Snake priestesses could have kept cats to control their snakes like dogs were kept to control livestock, kept them from escaping their baskets when the human wasn't looking, possibly even intercepted it if it made a attempt to bite-perhaps why its shown on the head?

Tom Peters

There is art of women with closed boddices. There is no agreement on what they mean. Could they be foreign women? Or young girls? The theory that the open bodice was worn by mothers or married women and the closed by girls has been floated almost since the first discoveries and is still unanswered.

Tom Peters

Do you think they could have built a crown, with a raised rim, and put a cushion in the center? That the cat could easily grip? A headdress that was a deliberate cat perch?

Stephen Lindholm

That throne wouldn't be demeaning enough to the human for most cats to accept.
