Serenity La’sandra

This episode breaks my heart. Reminds me of that episode in season 1 where Kevin was saying that they were so focused on making sure Randall didn’t feel too adopted, or worrying about Kate’s weight that he often got overlooked. Which led to him wanting attention.. it’s really sad. It’s not one of the most obviously sad storylines but as you watch the show and see his actions and see up to this point you see why he’s that way because of it 💔

LMAO I’m sorry I don’t even mean to, but if I was in the family I’d be the same way around Miguel like that’s just so uncomfortable 🤣

It’s so hard because everyone’s thoughts and views are valid. Everyone has different pov’s of the same thing. I’m a big sister. I’m a daughter who lost her mom suddenly and before her time. I have a chronic illness. Those things not only affected myself, but my mom, and my sister. Everyone had a different experience even having the same parents. And you can each come out completely different. And yeah it’s tough to watch tbh, it’s so real and raw, and so realistic to 99% of families.

The way she just shattered and cried out, "He was just easier!".... breaks my heart.

Ellis Grey always be starting something. DANG!!! I lost it when Rebecca cried out "He was just easier" because I know that feeling all too well with raising my two kids. My first-born son was always so much easier and so loving and cuddly growing up and my daughter just wasn't the type to want to be held, she wanted to do her own thing, she always was making chucky faces when she was mad. LOL I have pictures to this day too. I love them both the same though, I know what she's feeling and going through and it's so relatable just like you said. They are absolutely amazing in this show and I don't think I've ever seen a show this consistently good. I love Grey's but even that show isn't as consistently good with every episode like this is for me in my opinion. I still can binge watch back-to-back episodes like it's nothing though, don't get me wrong.

The scene in the therapist office blew me away. I think Mandy Moore deserves so much more credit!

This show is INCREDIBLE. Again another episode with amazing acting. Still gets me even though I have seen it before! I honestly relate to a lot of Kevin's feelings. I am number 2 of 5 siblings, I get the feeling invisible.

Kelli

I promise this show is just as good all 6 seasons!

fuckkk this show man😭😭 that whole therapy scene?? Emmy’s literally allllll the way around my god. it was just so real and raw, my heart was racing. like what everyone was saying needed to be said i think, but i was holding my breath watching through my fingers like that scene had me stressedddd😭 and season one, you would’ve found me as president of the Miguel haters club. but with that one line, “now you’re entering my no fly zone” with Beth and Toby, that made me cry. like there’s no malice or anything conniving about him, that’s pure reverence and respect for his best friend. and you know what? he’s got a forever fan in me now. and back to the therapy scene, because that was just too good. we’ve definitely seen moments of Kevin’s childhood where he was overlooked. unintentionally, obviously it’s just hard with triplets, and i feel like Rebecca said it so well when she said like she just didn’t think to worry about him, because he *was* so extroverted and outgoing and had so much already going for him. but even back in, i think season one- when they went to the pool, and Kate and getting bullied by those mean girls and Randall was trying to find his family; Kevin literally almost drowned because he thought Jack would watch him swimming. so these pieces have been slowly been crumbling for decades little by little and it’s honestly brilliant writing and characterization.

Ok so this was hands down my favorite episode so far. I LIVE for the family therapy YES!!! It’s messy as f*ck but it’s gotta come out people. And I agree with lots of other comments that everyone’s pov is valid but my heart really hurt for Kevin getting made to feel like his isn’t 😞 And now we gotta talk about the fat shaming. Strap in if you’re reading! My question to Rebecca expressing concern about little Kate being chunky would’ve been- what exactly is it that you are concerned about? Is it her “health”? Because that’s what most fat shaming hides behind. If that girl was having or showing signs of actual health issues I presume their pediatrician is competent and would diagnose and treat them. What Rebecca and most people in our society are really concerned about is the stigma. Fat = Bad. Undesirable. Lazy. Incompetent. Unattractive. Unlovable. That my friends, is what lies beneath fat shaming. These stereotypes originate from racism too btw, not health science- because white men in power sought to differentiate themselves from the black people they enslaved to justify slavery and declared features associated with black bodies as inferior/immoral. And of course the diet industry has been cashing in on and perpetuating that for a long ass time with great success haven’t they. It’s really sad because people don’t realize what they’re doing when they implicitly believe these things about fatness and then act in ways that perpetuate them. Rebecca, just like my mom, just like maaaaany other moms from this time especially, was well intentioned. They all only wanted the best for their little girls. Let's toss in a little good 'ole fashioned sexism to this mix too because obviously what's most important about a female is that she be desirable to a man. So all this to say that unfortunately, no, what Rebecca did by focusing on the "problem" of her little girl's weight wasn't what was best. It was harmful. It was shame. Which is not an effective motivator as much as people- myself included- want it to be. I am here to say as someone who went on Weight Watchers with her mom as a healthy, active, and slightly above "average" weight pubescent 12 year old - and is now an adult with obesity and prediabetes…food rules based on food judgement and body based shame DO. NOT. WORK. They are the problem. Let’s get it together folks. That’s all 🙃

I agree but have to add something: this was 30 years ago. There were no nutrionists, barely any science regarding weight gain and/or mental health. Rebecca didn’t have any reading material, probably an older male pediatrician for her kids (who told her Kate was overweight btw). The word fatshaming didn’t even exist yet. I totally get how Rebecca‘s approach was unhelpful and shaming her child for no good reason but I also get having three kids in the 90s without any research is probably what led her there.

this therapy scene still makes me sob endlessly. I identify so much with Kevin and his pov, but now years later I also really identify with Rebecca and how hard it must’ve been to raise three kids and lose your favorite person on top of it.

I agree 100% with this and am glad you added it. My lens is as someone who is healing from the damage all this has caused me personally, and so I’m currently struggling to come to terms with it all and work through the anger I feel about it I guess. But this is helpful because I’m also currently struggling a bit with feelings towards my own mother for the part she played and this really reminds me to be fair to her and considerate of her lens. Thank you!

This episode is just a masterpiece. Absolutely love it

No thank you for being so open about it 😊 I used to judge other people for their fatshaming too (and I still do sometimes), but I empathize with growing up being told so many shameful things and that beauty and health are equal to thinness. Plus, we clearly see that Kate‘s overeating is tied to her emotional baggage and how she copes instead of openly saying and dealing with what hurt her - she is literally shoving down her feelings. She was always envious of Rebecca and how she was everything Kate aspired to be - a good singer, having a perfect marriage, looking beautiful all the time. She didn’t see how much Rebecca didn’t see herself that way bc as a child you model yourself after your parents. So now Kate is finally understanding that her being open and vulnerable with the people around her can actually help way more than eating sweets secretly in the parking lot ever did. She is maturing emotionally and that also helps her physically.
