I'm an ICU nurse, and have had/heard many of these same conversations. The reason this show feels so real is because it is so accurate. A lot of the supporting roles are actually played by ER nurses and staff. There are episodes coming up where I had to stop watching because it felt like a replay of the day I had just had that I didn't want to relive. The conversation about the braindead kid and the intubated dad are weekly occurrences, and often tend to go just like this. Obviously some things are a little dramatized, but this is the closest to a real life hospital experience I have ever seen on TV
