Yes rabies does cause hydrophobia. At advanced stages the rabies infection attacks the central nervous system causing painful spasms in the throat when attempting to swallow liquids. The fear comes from the fact that even just thinking about water can cause them which is crazy. My brother went into a deep dive about this after the episode 😂 Also Jenna Fischer shared on her podcast with Angela Kinsey that Pam and Jim weren’t running because while attending an NBC event she slipped and fell down a marble staircase in NYC and fractured four vertebrae in her lower back before filming began for this season

I had to google your questions lol: Rabies kills about 59k/year but 95% are in Africa and Asia with only 1-5 deaths per year in the US Rabies causes fear of swallowing which includes swallowing water, and only appears in late-stage, advanced rabies.
