Yeah this was kind of a calmer episode. Loved your reaction. See you on the next one.

They definitely went a slightly different way with the writing and performance of Zack's character this season. Some of it maybe has to do with the deliberate maturing of his role as a fully qualified anthropologist. Specifically in this case, Cam had made a point to emphasise in season 2, when he got his doctorate. That to continue to work at the Jeffersonian, and on cases. He had to conduct himself in a way that juries could take him seriously when testifying. This was mostly about his appearance. But we could see some of these character evolutions as he transitions from an intern to a Doctor.

I see that. Now that Hodgins is with Angela, that friendship is a little less pronounced. Brennan is a little less of a mentor and more like a colleague since he qualified. Cam treats him differently now she isn't trying to win him over after becoming the boss. Booth sees him a bit differently since he went to Iraq. All their dynamics have changed slightly, which is where we got a lot more aspects of his character during those exchanges. The development of other characters like Sweets has changed screen time options as well. Without those previous elements they confined him more to the hyper rational, hyper intelligent squint. I agree with you, those rounded edges to blunt corners of his personality, are reflective of the other narrative and character choices they have made. With these types of shows that are a product of a team of writers rather than crafted by an individual or a pairing. They can be more formulaic at times. Lack a strong unwavering voice. Be the product of a bag of basic story gimmicks, and studio executive interference.

My favorite thing about episodes like this one is the look into personal relationships like Angela and Brennan and Brennan and Booth and the dynamics between Booth and Brennan and Sweets which gives him another role in the show. I also think Angela did the right thing. Can't believe there are only a few episodes left.

I feel like they glossed over the significance of the dagger. Was there DNA? Fingerprints? Why would her dad (or anyone else) leave the weapon in plain sight at the scene when his calling card (which wasn't even the right weapon) was used to implicate him anyway? Even without the alternate theory, he should have been found not guilty. I was actually expecting Russ to have been found as the killer and their father was protecting him.
