Most ppl, since original airing, have HATED Riley - x,y,z doesn’t matter it’s just hate. Everything he does right is insignificant or cringe. Fact is he was the ultimate empty vessel, which is why he was the 2nd in command (to Walsh). He was the blank page all the way till Buffy. He is what he is told to be, he acts and judges based off who leads him (Forest/graham had too much individual personalities so they were made to follow him)- he was the perfect solider. Never question, always comply, get the job done & drop it immediately. Buffy needed him to “balance” her life with “real life” after angel/parker. He treats her & makes her feel “normal”. Now his world is imploding (because of drugs and grooming) but he is still trying to be good. He is her reset, not everything has to be life or death. Call him wooden/uninteresting/bland and it would all be 100% correct because he is supposed to be. He is basic & boring. Just a reminder: it’s not the actor, it’s the writing/director.
