Morgana is Uther's "ward", so an orphan he has sort-of adopted from one of his knights

Uther is Morgana's father. But, her mother was married to one of his Knights. The knight believed she was his and raised her, until his death. Thus, she is introduced as Uther's ward. That is how noblemen often introduced their illegitimate children.
