Greetings,

IMPORTANT UPDATE:Beginning in March, Millennial Mage will be moving to a M-W-F schedule.

THE WHY:We are having another baby in late April/early May, and life is becoming a bit chaotic as we prepare for the new arrival. Appointments become more and more frequent, areas have to be re-baby-proofed, etc. On top of flying a desk for a living, it's a lot.

PATREON:Thank you, all, for your patronage. These last months have been a bit dreamlike with how much MM has been embraced and enjoyed.

Patreon will keep it's lead on RR, so, in effect, the advanced chapters will be even more advanced than before! 😉

That said, I completely understand if fewer chapters per week changes the value calculation for your patronage. I hope and pray that you continue to enjoy MM, whether or not you decide to maintain your financial support.

SPECIAL THANK YOUS:I want to give a special thank you to all those of you who have rated Millennial Mage on Royal Road, every rating helps bring awareness to more readers!

An extra grateful shout-out to those of you who have taken their time to write honest reviews. They are encouraging, uplifting, and fun for me to read, and they seem to be weighted more heavily in the algorithm for overall rankings on RR. The large number of high reviews that MM has is definitely a big reason that Tala's tale continues to draw in new readership! Thank you for helping the story gain visibility. 😁

PARTING WORDS:It continues to be an almost overwhelming pleasure to share MM with you all, and I look forward to writing Tala's Adventures for many, many chapters to come.

Best Regards,J.L.Mullins

Congratulations on the new addition! I’m also having another kid in April, so I completely understand the schedule adjustment. Good luck!

Aaron

Congrats!

Dax

Congratulations! You're naming the kid after me, right? ;-)

Michael

Congratulations! I know the future is always in flux but is the plan for this shift to be temporary till things have settled down again or is it intended to be permanent?

Andrew Goudie

Things settling down with babies can be 6 months+ Just depends on the kid :)

Alice

Good luck!

Enif

Honestly I'm amazed you were able to keep up a 5 days a week schedule as long as you did. I won't be surprised if you end up going to 2 days once the kid arrives. Regardless I'll be a Patreon as long as you keep making this kickass story.

J.L.Mullins

The plan is 3/week, "for now," but I'll say: "Assume permanent, please." to mitgate disappointment. 😁 MIGHT be able to sneak in some other projects that I've been thinking about, but that would be low down the hierarchy of priorities.

Michael

Ok, no worries :) Thanks for the clarification. I hope all goes well with your kid!

Congrats to the new family member! :-) To the monetary value... i have to confess that this is by large the most expensive patronage im running, and it is mostly because of the high amount of (good) content you churning out. You've reduced that already and i was ok with that, but if you go down to 3x per week, you should reduce the tier value. Maybe others here are of different opinion, but personally i cant justify to myself to pay that much for it when others are much less. It just dosnt do to pay two kindle books per month when you 'only' post 3 chapters a week. Hope you dont take this as me devaluing your work. Its great, but i need to keep things clear for myself when having a limited budget at hand.

Hello! Thank you for the feedback. I can completely understand if that's how you did/do the calculation. When I built out the MM Patreon, I set the Tier cost/benefit based on a wide look at what other creators are doing, and the number of chapters ahead offered by any given Tier. If I may ask, isn't that how you (and my other patrons) calculate the value as well? The $5 tier has exactly as many chapters per month as the $10 tier, but the extra $5 seems worth it to most, because of how far ahead it is. Again, I completely understand that everyone determines their spending/makes value judgments differently; I am mainly asking to better understand your perspective, and what factors contribute to the value of a serialized fiction. I really appreciate your patronage, and thank you, again, for taking the time to let me know what you are thinking. Regards, J.L.Mullins

RoyalRoad also gets exactly the same number of chapters and in that sense Patreon is a bit of a scam :-). For me it works so that I have a budget for Patreon, which is probably more than I should do, but it is split on multiple authors. When I feel there is not enough reading material I will swap out books. Then after a month or two I may swap it back in and binge read the content. But that is not your real question. How do you, as an author, make most money on Patreon? The answer is probably by keeping it at $10 but it is impossible to say for me.

J.L.Mullins

Thank you for letting me in on your process/thinking. I appreciate that! Hmmm... Much to think about. I think I'll do an update/inquiry post, early next week with some more concrete thoughts/ideas. 😁

Really the number of advanced chapters is kind of pointless after one month of subbing. After a month you are just paying for the story at whatever the release frequency is. I probably won't unsub but honestly even now you are pretty behind some of the big names as far as cost to release frequency goes so Id expect to lose a bunch of people. Love the story though no complaints here.

am

After doing the math vs some other authors I support (excluding outliers like Arcs who are somehow producing 80k high quality words per month and only asking $3 AUD/month), I think that while the content/dollar ratio at 3 updates a week is a little high, it's within range. I agree that you should do whatever maximises your revenue so that you can continue to do this.

On the other hand, the number of advanced chapters is what gets new patreons to subscribe. The release rate or the lack thereof is what gets them to unsubscribe later. So two metrics that does different things. When you can not keep up the release rate, you want to make sure you still have a lot of advanced chapters to get new people to subscribe for a while.

Hi J.L.Mullins - i think there is a missunderstanding, i do not 'pay' for how far ahead the chapters are, expect their growth is disproportional towards the RR chapters. If an author made an efford to give benefits towards his patreons, id put that into consideration, but there are not many who do. So where does that leave us. How much does the author put his all into writing, how good is the story so i want the author keep going etc. Thats where i come from. I do not go for the tiers that would limit your chapters because thats just feels like a bad deal. Dont know why, but id feel like im not 'valued', so i dont go for those tiers. I think thats where many authors on patreon are wrong. If id only wanted to read up to where the patreon is, then id just read up to the newest chapter and stop my patronage, let it rest for a month or so, wait for the chapter to catch up on RR. Because once caught up, there is no additional benefit in being an patreon, so why else do we stay expect to help an author reaching the point where they can life from writing alone?

Froyo Baggins

Completely agree, Ihad just decided to move more discretionary funds to patreon for this story. There is no WAY I keep it w/o the $10 tier moving down in cost.

Froyo Baggins

Ehh...I'm actually discouraged by a large amount of advance chapters. Frequency of release gets me to subscribe, but no matter the number, gonna be done with them fairly soon and the idea of paying a subscription for essentially a 1 time purchase is anathema. Large number in advance says, well, I could read a lot if I'm feeling sick or something but if I don't keep getting that value, guess Imma wait a few months and not know what they're talking about when I get back to it, so if I do end up grabbing it and updates aren't frequent I may end up dropping a story altogether.

J.L.Mullins

That makes total sense! Thank you for clarifying your position so kindly and clearly. I am still so new to this that I am stumbling through the dark, quite a bit. 😁 I am, at the moment, giving more than I can to writing (little sleep, not as much time with the kiddos/wife, etc.), and still struggling a bit, hence the step back. I have a passion and a desire to write, and my end goal is to be able to write full-time. With the 3/week schedule, I am planning on using the bit of breathing room to do a LOT to stabalize my foundation (both familially and professionally) so that I can get back to writing more. If I tried to keep up my current pace, I would slam into a wall, really soon. (I'll have more details in next week's posts.) Thus, the goal is: Write less to be able to write more. That said: I don't want to decieve or over-promise, and since I'm knew to all this, I'm trying to err on the "under promise" side. 😁 Again, thank you for your honesty and forthrightness. I look forward to your thoughts on my post, next week, and regardless of the result, thank you for your current patronage and readership.

My perspective is that I like to encourage authors producing stories that I like. I tend to dip in and out, but have a couple of authors that I sign up for longer than a month to support. You're one of the ones I support, but if I found the $10 too expensive I'd simply chose a lower backing level. The chapters in advance are nice, don't get me wrong, but at the end of the day I can wait for the RR release.

If you’re setting a brand name remember quality. The story is enjoyable, with a seldom seen version of the way magic works. Keep writing and know that you’re good at it.
