Hello!

So, with regard to a change to my posting schedule, I would like y'all's opinion. 😊

Right now, I do 3/week, 52 weeks per year. This comes out to 12- 14 chapters per month, totaling 156 chapters per year.

I think it will help my sanity and my buffers to have a slight alteration.

Either:

A. 1 day "off" per month.(Meaning that there would be 1 day per month that would otherwise get a chapter that now would not.)

OR

B. 12 chapters per month, regardless of length.

<In both cases, I will still be doing a Bonus chapter as I am able. I really enjoy doing them quite a bit. 😁>

In both A and B, I would be releasing the same number of chapters per year.

A = 156 - (1/month off * 12 months) = 156 - 12 = 144/year

B = 12 chapters/month * 12 months/year = 144/year

To me, B is a much better plan because then paying for  a month of Patreon will always get you the same number of released chapters.

I truly am open to other ideas as well, snark in the last polling option aside! 😉

Feel free to ask if you have any questions. 😊

Thank you, all, for being willing to support me writing this fun story. I am excited for the months and years to come, continuing to write Tala's tale and whatever I end up writing next. 😁

Best Regards,J.L.Mullins

No real preference from me, do whichever has you feeling happiest/healthiest. Other authors I follow have a week every month off, either to rest or to focus on editing and admin, so don't be afraid to ask for more time if you need it.

Aclys

End of the day, you need to take care of yourself mentally and health wise. A burned out author is not a happy author and we like our authors happy! A slight reduction in chapters per month is more than acceptable if it helps keep you feeling good and happy to keep writing.

Hey, whatever keeps you sane works for us. So choose whichever you prefer. I do like standardized schedule imho, because it makes it easy to keep track of when the chapter will drop, but ultimately your health is the priority here.

Adurna

As long as releases are consistent I am happy :) part of consistency is self-care.

Enif

More frequent breaks will probably be better for your health long term 🙂

To be honest, both almost sound the same for me, except with B you don't get a "off" day in February. That being said, for me "just" one missed chapter per month seems almost to little. I'd be okay with even two or three less per month, if it means you'll have a healthier writing cycle.

I like the first option better. With the second option I suspect there could be weeks that we only see one chapter as you try to spread them out throughout the month. With the first option it could just be the first Monday of the month left out, and we would always know when our "fix" isn't going to show up. This seems much better for my mental stability.

Norman Brumm

im not gonna vote for either as I would be happy with both. just be sure to take care of yourself so that I can keep reading what you put out. xD

Paul Murray

If it gives enough rest, I lean towards not going for a month without you. PS: Many yays for your news.

Irakli Jishkariani

Well, I chose first option. Well it's up to you, just taking actual clear day off seemed good 😄😄😄, if it is second and you don't feel when you rest and seemingly nothing changed to you that would be bad. So whatever, I don't care about how many chapter is in month, I subscribed yearly 😆😜😜😜

Kat

Personally I lean towards structure so I would take one day off a month and I would have it be the same day each month and take it all the way off and do something fun that day 😊

Dax

He doesn't write them the day he posts them. He generally has several written ahead at any given time that beta readers are reviewing, and the timing of new beta chapters is much less scheduled. The options presented here are just how you, as a patron, would like to receive chapters. Both options are the same amount of relieved pressure from JL.

This isn’t ubereats, it’s Patreon. Do what you feel is best to be creative and happy. It’s my privilege to help support you via Patreon. Best wishes to the family and your health.

You're effectively working for yourself, which means you need to factor in leave & the like into your planning. Do whatever you want that fits YOUR requirements to prevent burnout. Honestly, as long as you keep us informed there's not a problem from my end even if you decided to take an extended period of time off - from my selfish perspective I like reading your work, and anything that keeps that work flowing is acceptable to me.

Less‽ NoOoOo! Git bach ta Work, sla... I mean Author! *cracks whip* /s

Maybe even more days off? Alternate weeks between 2 and 3 chapters. Scheduleal a: m.w.f b: m.f and bonus ones a month. This sounds slightly more sane to me. Dunno why you should work so much.

Option B seems steadier to me, but that might just be my perception. Take whatever time off you need to achieve work-life balance, whatever it may be that feels best for you and your writing which we so love. I really don’t mind when you take time off, or how you do it although I do love consistency so that I can always look forward to your chapters on a schedule whenever they might be coming out.

I think the most important thing for us as readers, or at least for me (regardless if it's Patreon or RoyalRoad) is to have a consistent schedule which is easy to keep track of. For example, if you set your no-post day to the first Monday of each month (just said something random) Then it's pretty easy to remember even if you don't give reminders before each day off.

Most employers that run low-end cube farms (office jobs) in the U.S. offer 20-30 days of vacation a year, or 8+ hours a pay period (80 hours). This is for entry employees for the first few years. You should hold yourself to the same or better standard. To me that means you should be taking more time than you are suggesting. // assuming it takes ~12 hours to write, edit, re-write and post a chapter, plus an 4 hours a week in general admin, that makes a 40 hour work week. Maybe you write faster, maybe slower. So using the above minimum standard, you should take two business days off a month. That may not equate to a set number of chapters, but only you know your schedule, habits and time commitment. I think I remember you having a day job on top of all this, which makes me wonder where you get the time.

Ahh, but I'm doing what I absolutely love and feel called to do. 😁 This change is just to lighten the bit of stress I occasionally feel when life is full... and life is always full of late. 😉🤣 I appreciate the sentiment, though, and I will definitely keep it in mind! 😊

J.L.Mullins

That is very kind of you, but I think that might hurt me in the end. While a full schedule can be stressful, it also inspires and drives me to write, which I love and want to do. I am simply trying to tweak the balance just a bit. 😋

jthrr

I always appreciate the updates, but to be honest do not even know the current schedule or notice breaks generally unless they're months long. I follow quite a few stories, and all is well unless an author posts _too_ much, actually. 😁 I had to drop The Wandering Inn for that reason....

Do what you need to when important life moments come up …. your writing is appreciated but your family and mental health is important
