Nah, it's because he started as the Investigator. It wasn't a bluff as such, it was his actual character before Kazali shenanigans, so therefore no-one else would have it.

I think you might have been a bit too hasty in the cutting room when it comes to the storyteller deliberation part this time. I mean we have seen a lot of episodes of clocktower now and I actually found this uncharacteristically difficult to follow, especially the first game. I was really confused that there wasn't any explanation to the Amnesiac ability or why the Savant got two false claims one day (which turned out to be the Boffin misregestering a poisoner). It sort of got cleared up afterwards, but I would really have liked to hear Ben spell that stuff out during the game as he usually does. Not knowing doesn't really add a lot of excitement in my opinion, but it takes away a lot the cohesion and the story of the game. I can see how the storyteller parts often seem like unnecessary material in the cutting room, but hearing the storytellers deliberate during the nights are really good when it comes to keeping the audience in the know of what is going on. Sure, clocktower is a game of lies and uncertainties, and it is fine to live in that chaos during the daytime, but at nights, please keep the explanations of what is going on and Ben's reasoning. I personally feel that is way more engaging. A lot of enjoyment comes from hearing Ben set up the scenario and then see how the players take part of all that planning. Maybe this was just a one time thing. Maybe it was recorded differently and there just wasn't any material. I just wanted to point out the value of the storyteller deliberation/explanation in case that had come into question while editing the show. Still really appreciate all the work you guys and I still love the show. Cheers.

As you said, the savant pings were Blair (the boffin made recluse) registering as a minion, and I believe the Amnesiac ability, though I could be wrong is: Each night, pick a player and learn a number. This corresponds to the amount of steps they are away from a person of their character type/alignment. I don’t think this ability was confirmed, but it makes sense with both Mara and Jon.

David Hayter

I do love Josephine’s angry reactions at getting lied to and seeking revenge. It’s nice to have some players who aren’t so experienced they’ve become more detached and meta.

Andy

They also consistently omitted (or forgot to include) bits where the sailor drunk was added, and reasoning why the sailor would or wouldn't be drunk on a given day.

Andy

The first game had plenty of blame to go around, but the second game really fell apart when the gossip and assassin kill coexisted and didn't result in two conspicuous deaths. Storytellers thought it would create ambiguity for the gossip, I guess, but the complete opposite happened, and Jon's assassin ability ended up confirming two good players, as if it didn't go off at all. Harsh. Oh well. In general I find passive and single-use minions to be rather weak and frequently a detriment to evil. It's too easy for their abilities to be negated by drunkenness or storyteller decisions, and this happened in both games. Recluse was a terrible bluff Blair obviously couldn't use. If she reads as Recluse she'd be an early execute, if she reads as minion she'll be a late execute; there's no path to victory there, without a SW to take over. Of all four minions this week, only the Wizard had any impact on the gameplay, and unfortunately it came too late and with serious user error. I know everyone's still trying to get that Mastermind win, but I don't think it's going to happen. Maybe in conjunction with Spy or Widow for a confirmed long-game bluff, but it's basically a nerfed Boomdandy. If I were Kazali I'd pick from among Cere, DA, Poisoner, Harpy, Witch, PH, FM, OG, even Psychopath, any day, especially with Sailor and Courtier on the script, so they get multiple tries to be useful. OTOH, I don't think I've seen Holly this excited to be on the good team in a while.

Kelly Leach

I agree, although I did eventually figure out why Emily's info was the way it was. I also would've liked to hear their reasoning for making Jon drunk instead of just seeing it on the grimoire.

Kelly Leach

Electric Ninja, the amnesiac ability was mentioned after the game, and it was that if they're a townsfolk, she got a 1, if they're an outsider, she got a 2, if they're a minion, she got a 3, and if they're the demon, she got a 4. I would've liked the explanation at the beginning because I assumed it was the number of steps from an evil player and then got really confused with Jon, lol. At least you came up with a good, plausible ability!

Kelly Leach

They also decided not to kill Sully when he was drunk from the sailor, which would've maybe cast some doubt on Josephine, especially since Ken wasn't being forthcoming that game.

Angel and Gaz

How delightful! The Wizard role reminds me of Level 20 DnD magic characters just utter chaos!

KenKage20

I wanna see sully with the wizard token so badly 😂

Mel Glueck

What was Holly's power in the first game? I feel like I missed some of the Story Teller's conversations this video because I am so much more confused then normal :(

Bobbi

Holly got a number for a name and it was the type of character they were. 1= TF 2= Outsider 3= Minion 4= Demon

Bobbi

The recluse “ability” from the boffin was really interesting.

Burak Bora Kapan

I don't think the Gambler can kill themselves when they're drunk, since being drunk prevents your ability from affecting the game state

Alec Gideon

Haven't actually started the game yet, I just wanted a shout out to all the Wicked references, that's absolutely made my night 🤣

Nav

I was definitely whelmed by this episode. Felt like Blair couldn't be bothered to play evil, which was a shame. Second game was exactly why STs have to favour the evil team so heavily, a couple of early mistakes cascaded heavily

Maddie

Did they go over that before the game started? I only caught it when they explained it after the game ended

Jacob Nagel

I want the wizard to wish an outsider becomes an evil lunatic later in the game (assuming they become fangu) just to create chaos for a bit, and is still a bit like a marionette when things calm down around them

Will Seamon

Along with everything else people have voiced issues with: giving day 1 Savant info that’s basically “Ken and Blair are evil” or “Sullivan is evil” is an absolute demolishing of the evil team

AppleMouthBoy

Everyone's dogging on this episode in the comments but I actually really enjoyed it! I thought the second game was a tense standoff in the last two days that was really fun to watch, and I thought that the first game was a fun clusterfuck.

James Boulton

Josephine playing in a pitch dark room does kinda make it look like her face is suspended in space. Like Holly in Red Dwarf...

Jay

Gotta say, that Mara own goal was really unsatisfying to watch in slow motion as she pleaded for that vote to not go through (despite herself saying later that she clearly seemed like the Wizard). It felt like that whole first game was evil not playing as a team at all, which I found frustrating because there was so much set up for the characters. Why didn't Blair or Ken immediately go to Mara to ask what she had done? Or why didn't Mara get ahold of them by pinging them for a private chat if they were busy? It was crucial information that led to a swift defeat. Hope this is a learning experience for them as I normally love how tactical each of them can be when they play Evil.

FreshTeegs

After about 3 months of binging I am finally up to date with NRB BOTC! Exciting times as we'll have our next Legacy game coming out soon too!

Triof

I assume that as outed Evil, they didn't want to look guilty by talking to her. But I do think they could've tried to chat in the Town Square or something, given it would've been such a quick chat.

Triof

I don't know...at first I thought given Blair the Recluse power was an awful choice, but I feel if they'd actually dug into the Savant evil more, it would have really suggested that it couldn't be true, as there was an outed wizard on the other side of the circle. I felt Ben was pushing so heavily that Ken and Blair were minions that it couldn't possibly be true, which would've led her to think Sully was lying, or she was drunk/poisoned somehow, etc.

Joakim Billtén

Very happy to hear that Daddy Ben plays Football Manager. Bloody wonderful game that.

T Pearson

That second game was great. I love BMR though

Edith

Boooo at Ben using genAI boooo 🍅 🍅

Tomas

-SPOILERS- Can I just say that Mara played such a strong second game. It constantly felt like she was trying to solve the game and was even able to build a credible world from such hard and fringe scraps of info. Hats off, would've fooled me.

John

Best Wizard wish in a game I ran was "every character gains the Recluse's ability." Such. Chaos. As the ST I had to interpret the "May register as evil or as a minion" rather more liberally than I usually do. I almost ALWAYS would have the Recluse register as evil, even in places where many Storytellers would not. I did use it to give the big hint when I decided to give the chef a 10. I figured I'd never get a chance to use that again. But I gave the gravedigger accurate information, since they "may" register. I never give the gravedigger accurate information when a Recluse dies. I gave enough accurate information to make the game close, because if I had run the recluse as I usually do it would have been completely impossible for the good team and and that's not fun for good or evil. It was a brilliant social read at the very end in the final three that won good the game.

John

-SPOILERS- I was really impressed by Josephine in that second game. She got her information, trusted it, made her case, did her job, and it got her killed. Nothing makes me more frustrated than someone hiding their information for fear it will get them killed, or just for no reason I can discern. I mean, I'll grant Jon was a spent assassin, but any time you kill an evil player rather than another townsfolk, it's another good townsfolk the demon has to kill. Mara really made the second game a close one too, making up for a bad game one. (Everyone can have a bad game from time-to-time.) It was well-played in a losing effort.

JF

What was Holly's ability?!?!?!

Ruth S

You mean aside from being an absolute legend?:)

Ruth S

Agree! I also love it when the STs discuss the optimal plays / best player to pick in certain scenarios- or Ben saying what he would do if he was a player in that situation etc

Cole A

Am I missing something obvious about how to reach the script link? None of them have been working for me (regardless of browser, being logged in, etc.)

Emma Manning

the azurewebsites site is no longer available. replace 'botc-scripts.azurewebsites.net' with 'botcscripts.com' to make them work

Kelly Leach

You’re right, thanks for the correction!

Ruth S

We’ve seen your chambers. …they’re full of knives!

Tommy

John not killing holly is so bad… nobody thought Blair was evil so him protecting his neighbors makes no sense, you have to just go down with the ship there

Jaco Valencia

The scripts links from azurewebsites.net are broken, I hope there is a way to fix it, or add que script name to find it elsewhere.
