listen. i know i said i was sick. but i got better! so i'm here with the horror game i made for nanoreno!!!

this one is DROP'S BACKSTORY, so there's lots of content warnings attached (if you're familiar with her from Lonely Wolf Treat haha)

game page: https://nomnomnami.itch.io/escape-from-wormwood

password: raindrop

~8,500 word count, no jump scares, mostly pain and misery... web and android versions are up too so everyone can play!!!

this whole thing came together in about a week, i'm really happy i could finish it for the game jam hehe. part of the reason i wanted to do it is because the next chapter of timber's community service features drop, and she talks about her backstory in it, and i was like... is this really where i want that stuff to be explicitly revealed... i thought a full game would be a lot better, so i made it. it's short, but it serves its purpose...

umm the only other thing i'm planning on adding right now is the extras gallery! otherwise it's pretty much done... aiming for 3/26 public release, but i will delay to the 28th if the gallery takes longer than i expect. trying not to push myself, i am pretty excited to hear reactions to this one though since the vibe is so different from everything else i've made. enjoy!??!?!??

Boy if I had a nickel for every time I played a visual novel about someone eating human flesh and being really sad about it, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice. Wormwood was always the most inexplicably creepy part of Lonely Wolf Treat, and it's nice to see that creepiness jacked up to 22. When I heard that the new game was going to be "Drop Game" I was thinking "This is going to be either super dark or super sweet." Silly me for not realizing it would be both. The Itch.io page says it's darker than Night with Timber, but I'm back and forth on whether or not I'd agree with that. Night With Timber is genuinely terrifying because it's so terrifyingly real. No time is spent on making the lead villain of the whole affair "understandable." He's just a genocidal lunatic. But this? The combination of the cult never really being seen and Drop being so young makes the tone a lot more sad than dark. Granted I am very particular about what I consider "Dark." The scariest thing is how unfazed Drop is when she finally kills Loam because this is someone she's bonded with and at the moment of his death and she (seemingly) feels nothing about it. She has her doubts, but they just aren't strong enough to really settle. A sincerely frightening and heartbreaking reflection of just how much this cult has affected her. The thing about this game I love is how honest it is about surviving a cult. People talk so much about "deprogramming" but the truth is there's only so much people can do to actually deprogram someone who is in a cult. The desire to leave, to hope for better, has to come from within. This is just as true for cults as it is for any abusive relationship. Some people just don't get that, and seem to believe it's their personal responsibility to deprogram others, and end up actually harming that process. I actually went back to re-read MoxDonalds, and what stuck out to me is that Drop is painfully aware of this. That if she'd had this revelation sooner, a lot of people might still be alive. It haunts her. It makes me wonder how much she has to keep people at a distance because she can never be completely open with them. God, just like Timber, Drop went from a character I didn't really think much about to someone I am now thinking about in abundance. Anyway time for bed, I might come back and post more before work tomorrow

You really outdone yourself on it being darker than NWT... I'm speechless.

Very nice. Very gripping, and ultimately very touching. It was a good touch to have the story told from the perspective of someone who's been captured by the cult. That helps the player feel the fear and horror of what is done to them, and helps the player understand all the more the awfulness of the situation. It also had a good, and important message - that closing ourselves off from others leads to decay, cruelty and hatred, and that learning more about the world, and opening ourselves up to different possibilities and different experiences can help us become more loving and compassionate. I liked how the backdrops changed to reflect how the characters were feeling. The music worked well, too - it helped to convey all the moods it needed to, whether creepy horror or touching hopefulness.

SPOILERS BELOW. However, though I like the game overall, I do have one small gripe. I don't think it's really fair for Loam to be called a 'coward' in the extras section. We can see what Loam is thinking and feeling, because we play as him, and he never really came across as cowardly to me. He seemed more like someone who was sensible, realistic and compassionate. He recognised that he and his partners were restrained and imprisoned by a hostile group, and most likely outnumbered. He also recognised that the person torturing them was still a person who could be persuaded, and not some mindless monster, and so he tried to get himself and his partners out of there in the most non-violent and effective way possible - by trying to gain his captor's trust and sympathy. If he'd done things like try to escape himself while leaving the others behind, or sell out his partners for his own freedom, then he'd seem more like a coward. But he didn't. Sure, he was scared, but that doesn't make him a coward! He'd been imprisoned by a murderous cult who were going to bleed him to death! ANYONE would be scared if that happened to them! That's just a normal reaction. What could he have done differently that would have made him 'brave'? Should he have talked back to the cultists and antagonised them? Peat did that, and all that happened was she got a knife stuck in her! Should he have somehow broken out of his ropes and made a run for it? The monkey did that in Part 2, and she immediately got recaptured. I'm sorry to go on about this, and I know it's just a small point, but I just thought it needed to be said. Loam didn't seem like a coward to me, he just seemed like someone who was being smart and kind-hearted, and the only reason his efforts didn't work was because Drop had been too indoctrinated and she needed more time to realise that what she was doing was wrong - as the game itself stated, clearly and explicitly.

hehe, thank you for defending loam... i personally think he's a coward because he did sell out peat immediately, and only actually cared about his own survival even though he did his best to frame it as if he intended to save the others too. i think i'll remove the "coward" title from the gallery after all though cuz i don't need to kick him while he's down... i appreciate the feedback!!

I wouldn't really call CoAaL a visual novel, I mean it kinda is, but I think their referencing one of NomNomNami's other games called Night with Timber

I really enjoyed this game. I think if a creator is able to make the player get goosebumps when witnessing a recurring scene or returning character, then they can be confident in saying they developed an amazing universe. I'm not sure if it was planned, but I think Trick being the final push that Drop needed to convince her mind is a genius decision. It also really makes me wonder what would have happened if Trick and Loam were switched in the timeline. Anyways 10/10 game, love the credit scene
