hey everyone! sadly just received an email from a fan letting me know the links to my spreadsheets with steam keys for my games have been compromised and made available on a piracy site.

i liked doing the open spreadsheet method because it was convenient and fun to see everyone's comments, but i think from now on i'll have to send them out individually via dm or something. i knew the old method could be exploited but i'm still pretty sad to see that it has actually happened now.

i'm gonna think about my options and try to come up with something that will work better for everyone, since not everyone claims keys anyway so it feels like a waste to send them to people who might not use them... and it's sad when it's one per person since i noticed a lot of people take 1-2 extra to give to their friends which i think is so sweet...

anyway, i know the puppergeist keys JUST got posted, so if you missed your chance to grab one, please DM me. there are still 10 left from what i can tell. i'll update this post when they run out. puppergeist keys are all taken, i will make a new post if the publisher ever gives me more!

thanks for reading!

I don't really know much about steam, but am I able to receive it and gift/give it to someone else?

BellaBnuuy

the idea of people using your current method of distributing keys to supporters to pirate your work is incredibly disheartening 💔 especially with how generous you are with your work as is!!

BellaBnuuy

when purchasing a game you're given the option to gift it but not when redeeming a key yourself, keys can be given to other people directly through messages though and then they can redeem the game themselves

yes, steam keys are just codes that anyone can use to activate a product in their steam library. for my own games i can generate as many as i want, but for the games i've done in collaboration with Serenity Forge, they control the steam stuff so i have to ask them anytime i want new keys u.u so it's extra sad if any of the puppergeist keys were stolen... because i had a very limited amount to begin with.

Ah good to know, thanks!

Oh alright then, well that's ANOTHER good thing to know, haha :D

Trashboat

Can you send them out in like a mass dm on patreon for supporters?

Eltigre

i wonder if giving out the spreadsheet link through patreon dms would work to help them be protected from piracy

since the spreadsheet is viewable to anyone, if the link is shared and posted publicly anywhere then it has the same effect as if i had just posted it normally... i could invite people by email but i'm not sure if that reveals everyone's contact information to each other. i need to look into it.

nomnomnami

it being in one big spreadsheet viewable by anyone (if you have the link) is the main problem, since the link can always be reposted somewhere. i'm gonna ask other creators and see what they do...

zallin

If they will share the link, they will share a screenshot. May need to be on us to post somewhere here if we won't use it, assuming the send one key to each eligible member option.

could probably just make it so people can just request additional keys for friends or keys for older games and sending out mass dms of a single key each for new game releases i feel like that might be good enough. trying to find a way to still do the spreadsheet but keep it private would probably be preferable though

One way would be to make a website to claim the steam keys. Send out dm with unique links and each link can claim up to 2 or 3 keys, so that each person can only access a limited amount while unclaimed keys remains in the pool. Problem is, it is stateful and needs a database/backend. Something like supabase free is enough but has some limitations

In fact, I can help make that website in my free time if you want. It should be able to use Pateron OAuth so one link for everyone, login with Pateron, and it checks subscription tier when someone claim a steam key. The only thing that costs money would be a domain name

LordTylus

If you have other means of interacting with the community such as a discord for example, you could run a custom made discord bot where someone can use a claim command. Only working once a day or something. That way people who actually want to claim can claim. And people who want to steal at most get 1 key every 24h. It can still be exploited by prop creating several accounts. But maybe discords verification stuff such as needs valid email address or phone number can help prevent that. That's just a idea that immediately came to mind. And how the nature of these first ideas goes, its probably not the best idea either.
