During an interview with Kit and Joe, Kit said Episode 4 was the best work of the Heartstopper series. I totally agree with him. What a beautifully put together story.

I have a friend who had anorexia nervosa. I’m very very glad that they did not starve Joe Locke for the role the way that some actors have approached similar roles, or like how my friend starved and how her body wasted away… only because for the viewer, a more realistic representation of the effects of AN are harrowing, and I kinda didn’t want to be faced with that again. I suppose that Charlie actually dealt with a lighter case of it, despite this not being light. For a few months time, my friend looked like she was going to die, and in fact a number of the people in our friendship group reacted to her plight by steeling themselves for a death they convinced themselves was coming. Others of us never gave up hope of a recovery… but for the longest time I worried I was naively foolish in that regard. We all felt helpless in the face of this, other than being there for her when she wanted to see us… but like with Charlie, there was a period when she didn’t want to see us at all, and I think they did a good job of explaining that in these recent episodes. My friend did get professional help, and for her it took about a whole year before starting to come out the other end of the tunnel. She didn’t have a Nick to lean on in her case… I don’t know if that made the difference. She did get through it, and part of that in her case was making new friends who hadn’t seen her at the worst moments. She wanted people around her who just treated her like she was “normal” in regards to the life-list of experiences that the average person has, and in regards to the day-to-day ability to cope with everything, while I suppose we her older friends kept treating her like she was so fragile she was likely to break at any moment, so we tended to tiptoe around her if you know what I mean. Really, we should have treated her like the toughest thing going because of what she had made it through. Anyway, I have read the book here, and I knew this was coming, but I didn’t realize that watching these episodes would make me feel compelled to write all these experiences down… even though Nick needed to do just that in the story. Goes to show how well written this was I suppose. Take from this whatever you will… but don’t give up hope for a friend who might be suffering similarly, and don’t treat them like they’re weak, just consider how strong they must be to get through another day with this, and give them your respect as well as your love.
