The Cornered Mouse Dreams of Cheese (Japan, 2020)

A movie about desperate, tortured souls. Both males were unlikable characters as were the women and it was hard to find compassion for them. But the actor who played Imagase did an amazing job portraying him because I felt so sad for him. Apparently a running theme, if you love someone for years, you start to get desperate and use whatever method to get that person(not ok). What Imagase did in the beginning and his obsessive, stalkerish behavior was wrong and disturbing but my heart broke for him. He truly did love Kyoichi but didn’t believe he would breakup with the fiancé so he left. I’m not a fan of open endings (the manga ended in a happy ever after) but Kyoichi showed growth. He found the person that made him want to truly commit and the ending makes you hope that Imagase comes back. It was a good and slightly depressing movie experience.

I do think that kyouichi started loving wataru, like their flashback conversation at the beach playing to his head after breaking up with tamaki, but it was kinda late. And their arrangement and how it started didn’t really help at all. Wataru felt kyoichi might not change at all despite many chances to do so, but also that made him quite paranoid, granted he has right to do so given kyoichis behavior/tendencies. At the end kyouichi was the mouse not cornered but waiting for the cheese to comeback. In the novel, it was kinda a happy ending but I get it why they cut it off for this movie. It made sense, it mirrored the reality. Despite it being messy, it was the kind of messy that’s good. I love the movie! 2/3 for the movies Tita. I didn’t watch egoist because I already know the story and it’s the kind of movie that I wouldn’t watch twice, lol

Yeah I enjoyed the mess in this film, and it really was chaotic but in a good way. Lol. I mean, they were able to get me feeling empathy for Wataru in spite of what he did in the beginning, so that's something. 👀💖
