Doi Boy (Thailand, 2023)

That was fascinatingly complex, all of it politically, whether on the international level or the personal one. Compared to Myanmar, Thailand is miles and miles ahead politically… but plagued with corruption and other issues. Obviously lives on the Thai side of the border are just about as complicated. I think we can take Sorn’s passport as high quality; Ji sacrificed everything to carry out his plan, and I expect that as a (corrupt) cop he could obtain the best. I even think that the agency that Sorn and his friend applied for passports from early on was planning on supplying them, not that they were legit, and not that they weren’t overcharging by a lot … but when you’ve got a physical location that people can visit, you still want to provide actual service. You wouldn’t make enough on those scams to have to close down and physically move again and again. I assume that part of the 20,000 Baht would go to pay off the cops and other authorities in fact. Anyway, well made, worthwhile, touching, sad, but still a little bit hopeful. As the Thais would say, “fighting!”

I enjoyed this film a lot. I'm glad they highlighted the human trafficking issues in that area. We don't see it that often in the series we watch, so I'm glad they did a good job of portraying it. 💖

This maybe too heavy for me at this time.
