Is that a curved empty scabbard and a straight sword?

Blame the original 2D artist, as that is indeed how they drew it. Maybe the blade curves toward the end (in the rock)? Maybe the scabbard belongs to a sword she lost long ago, and she keeps it in hopes of getting it back. :0

Yep, that's true to Frazetta's original piece. It's been a talking point in that painting for almost 60 years.
