Dear Patrons

A quick update to this post to let you know the YouTube version is now published:Honest Government Ad | Bullshit™This extended version includes the insane story of California's forest offset program, which set aside 6M offset credits to compensate for losses due to wildfires over the next 100 years. And wildfires torched 11M offset credits - in just ONE decade 🔥😱 I couldn't fit this into the vertical edit which needs to be under 3mins, but I think it's a sobering illustration of how insane it is to think we can offset carbon emissions with forests, in the middle of a planetary warming crisis that's melting glaciers in Nepal. The YouTube video description also includes a list of sources and links to further reading for those who'd like to read into more behind this story. Meanwhile: the Insta video has hit almost 1M views. It's also on our Facebook page. Bluesky here. And TikTok here. Over and out for now.--

Well, that's the main purpose of this post...But if you'd like to stick around, I do have a few words I'd like to share about this HGA.It's a sad testament to our times that this HGA's title, Bullshit™, could make it about any number of current topics. But once you watch the video, I think you'll find it is particularly suited to the actual topic it covers: carbon offsets. You know, the things that let polluters keep polluting as long as they pay someone not to cut down a forest somewhere else (and pray it doesn't catch fire). I don't need to tell you things are looking dire for our climate future. The UN report that came out yesterday saying "there are no good outcomes", is equally terrifying (for obvious reasons) and infuriating (because it perpetuates the doomer mentality to which fossil fuel companies want us to become desensitised; when in fact, we need to fight to stop every single incredment of planetary warming). But the point I'm trying to make is: we can't afford to give our biggest polluters even more carbon offsets to keep polluting.

Which is why it matters that on Septmber 16 our federal Senate will vote on whether or not to allow a new method for creating carbon offsets. To complicate things: the NSW Government - which deserves credit for promising to establish the Great Koala National Park to protect critical koala habitat, if elected - has decided, two and a half years after being elected, only to keep that election promise if the above mentioned offset method passes through the federal Parliament. Not surprsingly, this situation has split (/wedged) the environment movement: with some saying we should accept the trade-off between creating the park and more offsets for polluters; and others (including Bob Debus, who was Bob Carr's environment minister) saying we should not have to make this trade-off for various reasons; not least the fact that the park was an election promise; was never conditional on greenlighting more carbon pollution; and that it's already been budgeted and doesn't need the sale of offsets to pay for it.The debate has become very messy and divisive. So of course, I thought we should make an HGA about it so we don't miss out on all the fun (/sarcasm).Trying to pack all that into a 3 minute video isn't easy, and many details had to be left out. So I'll include a list of courses and references in the YouTube video description, once it's up.In the meantime, you might like to check out the HGA we made a few years ago about offsets and carbon credits. Whilst it goes into more depth on offsets, keep in mind this was under the Coalition and some things have changed since Labor took over (many of them for the better in terms of the ERAC's integrity)We also made this episode about the Safeguard Mechanism, the Tony Abbot policy that Labor rebranded as its "pollution reduction" policy, and which now governs the ACCU carbon offset market in Australia. And if you really want to learn about biggest bullshit of all, check out our epic time-travelling HGA about the Kyoto carryover credits.IN OTHER NEWS...

We collaborated with GetUp and Digital Rights Watch on our Palantir HGA in June which had almost 6M views on Insta, and 1.9M on our TikTok. So I think it's safe to say we contributed to this outcome.

Not that it's anywhere near the end of this story: Palantir is still embedded in many government agencies and civilian infrastructure; and even if we get rid of those bastards, others will follow. But still: we have to celebrate all the wins along the way.And of course, this is a great time to remind everyone - myself included - that the only reason we can have such an impact in terms of informing people, is thanks to all of you: our Patrons.Phew... that's a long post. I'll wrap it up!Keep an eye out for the Youtube version of our Bullshit™ HGA on our channel. I'll add the link here once it's out; or maybe I'll do another quick post to share it with you. And for all the dads out there... Happy Father's Day on Sunday. Thank you for all the work you do in your families. We see you.Giordano, Lucy and fam.Honest Government Ad | Bullshit™

Hi Giordano, thanks so much for this latest post on offsets. It’s very timely and helpful. Hopefully, the Greens will do the right thing and disallow the INFM Method. Meanwhile, talking about Coles and Palantir, while it’s great to hear that Palantir will not be renewed what do you think they’ll replace Palantir with. I can’t imagine they will stop surveillance. Also, why are staff telling customers that they “must” scan bulk toilet rolls first, before scanning other goods? There’s something sus about that.

we need a new emotion to depict knowing a juicemedia video is out. I'd say it is both being happy (new video!) and also being angry (new goverments doing shitty things). May it be angpy?

Nicely done team! Vertical IS the way to reach my kids and grandkids! The role of our Orange Shitgibbon in climate destruction is monumental. Please consider your past practice of creating a more detailed podcast to give the enhanced detail that can't fit in three minutes. Bluey and Borat! Sweet! If you know the Bluey team, please consider pitching a dream I have: they need a season where Bluey transitions! After all, her Dad is Blue! And Blue is the color of the USA party that is NOT trying to destroy the climate and democracy. And, it would absolutely drive the RShit Christofascits NUTS! Keep up the GREAT work and HAPPY FATHERS DAY!!!!

Julian Adamaitis

Hi Giordano - keep up the good work. I was a little overwhelmed by this one not being familiar with the practice of offsets. So much information was packed so densely and went by so quickly I had to watch it three times in a row to "get it" and I'm still not sure I actually did get it all. I know your style is fast paced, but I would have got the message more clearly if you slowed the pace down just a tad. Just my 2 cents and worth about that much, but I had to say it. That is really a fine piece of work and keep it up! I love you guys for it.

Sam Canz

Killer video this month. Thanks, Giordano!

Will

Love it!!! Are you guys thinking of doing another Honest Government Ad for Aotearoa before the election?

thejuicemedia

Hi Julian, I hear you. Sorry! There's just so much to say and we have to try to keep it short to fit in under 3mins. This is why I used to have a podcast where we would unpack the story in more detail. (I will bring the pod back once family responsibilities allow it!) But in the meantime I just wanted to say that it's great that you watched it 3 times; I like to think many people do this for the same reason. G

thejuicemedia

Thanks Will! I don't think we'll manage to do a new HGA but I'm planning to do an edit on last year's episode and republish at the end of Sept to remind Kiwis to register to vote!

thejuicemedia

Thanks John! Quite right, Palantir is just one head of the hydra. (And I have not heard about the toilet rolls, wtf?!)

thejuicemedia

Thanks Jason! I really miss being able to expand and explore topics in more detail in the podcast. So it's great to know people appreciate it. I am hoping to bring the pod back as soon as family responsibilities allow it. Maybe even next year.

Fun to see Bluey as the BS icon having just spent a week with the grand kids catching up on their favorite episodes. Maybe you can incorporate Unicorse into the next one, have him channeling the climate deniers mantra, "And WHY should I care?". 🙄😄

Jason Orcamoon

Thanks for the YouTube version! Doing vertical first IS the way to go to reach a younger audience; but, the YouTube version in a 16:9 ratio is way more watchable. I lived thru the transition from 4:3 to 16:9 TVs and home theaters and blows my mind how people now watch so much on their phones!!!

Johan Zijlstra

I really like this one and I live in The Netherlands. Somehow I like how insightful it is. Keep it up!

Richard Barnes

Particularly good, and of course particularly timely. One small quibble. Native forest logging in Victoria has officially stopped, but hasn't really stopped - another example of govt bullsh-t: https://johnmenadue.com/post/2026/08/do-fuel-breaks-stack-up-for-us-and-our-forests/ I note that David Lindenmayer, who has worked harder then anyone to apply science to forest management, and who is passionate about saving what's left, has supported the development of the bullsh-t INFM method. I just think he doesn't comprehend the level of wickedness that govts will stoop to.

Trisha Lee

Thanks team, great funny terrible depressing and super important work. Keep it up!

thejuicemedia

Thanks Richard. Yes, I'm aware of Victoria's native logging situation but I didn't think this was relevant to mention in the video because it's an enforcement issue. Heroin also continues to be illegaly sold on the streets, but we regard that as a law enforcement problem, rather than a problem with the law itself. Victoria needs to better enforce the law. NSW will face the same problem when it ends native logging - with or without the INFM method.

2026-09-19 13:00 Hi Giordano, another awesome vid, I had seen the Carbon Credits & the Offsets Safeguard Mechanism HGA's, but somehow I missed the Kyoto carryover credits one, even though I really enjoyed the We need to talk about the Fires | with Simon Holmes à Court podcast on our Kyoto shitfuckery on 18 Feb 2020 - https://thejuicemedia.simplecast.com/episodes/the-fires-part-1-feat-simon-holmes-a-court-teMKl_9T. A then and now vid on all this could be cool? Then and where we stand now as a country and a government on all of this, and perhaps including the emissions reductions on paper, and the actual real emissions reductions... that may tally up to... fuck all.
