Good morning Patrons, here's the preview for our next Honest Government Ad!  By now you've probably heard of the scandal about My Health Record. Well, there's another dodgy Government program we've all been signed up to without our full consent, and it's been getting far less media coverage. So I figured we could all do with an honest announcement about it from our beloved Government. As always, we value your feedback on these previews. You're the first fresh ears to hear them! So if you feel inclined, do let us know in the comments if you can see any room for improvement!I am editing the video now... hoping to publish it by the middle of the week. So catch you again in a few days!Giordano

Great work guys. Made me chuckle quite a bit. Looking forward to seeing the final edit. All the best, Ed

Prof Steve Keen

Hi Giordano, it's good, but I'd suggest one edit to make it sound less partisan (and not realistic!). To "You can opt out at the next election" to "You can try to opt out at the next election. That's if you're confident that Bill Shorten won't morph from progressive to reactionary after becoming PM the way that Malcolm Turnbull did"

Prof Steve Keen

That'd was supposed to be "more realistic"! I just winged on Twitter about the Swype keyboard rewriting words for you, and it did it here

thejuicemedia

Thanks for the suggestion, Steve, and ofc you're spot on about that being more realistic. I do have to be mindful of length, and not making the ending drag too much, but I could include a visual disclaimer like the one you suggested - let me see what I can do! Thanks again!

Prof Steve Keen

Good twist to visual. Greetings from Amsterdam BTW: just got back today after three weeks in Sydney with family. Hope you're enjoying my books in your spare time.

Prof Steve Keen

Yep! Maybe as a mock election ballot: I've with "Malcolm, for more of the same; Bill, for The Rule of Law (unless he "Morphs It Like Malcolm" after winning and turns from progressive to reactionary) Sorry, being very Amsterdam-ish here.

T

I'm not sure that the My Health Record opt-out is "easy". Many people who've tried to opt-out of My Health Record haven't been able to do it through the website, and they've had to wait hours on the phone. And that's if they even have the ID requirement in the first place.

thejuicemedia

Yes good point. I did consider this... but I wasn't sure what adjective to use for MHR, to make the point that we don't have a clear opt out choice for the police state. And I didn't want to say "with no opt-out choice" bc we DO have one - our vote (as revealed at the end). Do you have any suggestions? (Would need to be a simple adjective to avoid wordiness)

thejuicemedia

Hope you had a good visit and thanks for sending me your books!

canberrastreets

Off to up my pledge right now. That preview (with the visual disclaimer) will be magic . . . besides STICKERS!

T

It depends what point you want to make: "individual" or "personal" make the point that we have to opt out as a group. "current" makes the point that we can't opt out now.

Benito Cao

Yet another excellent script. I'm looking forward to the video. The only aspect that left me a bit unconvinced was the ending: that we can opt out at the next federal election. I understand voting out the current government could be the main (or perhaps the only) way to resist these developments, but the question then is: what would Labor/Shorten do about any of these initiatives/policies introduced by the current government? I am not convinced they will take a different approach. Governments (of any persuasion) that inherit significant powers from previous governments hardly ever dismantle or give up those powers. There has to be significant pressure on them to do that, preferably starting before they are elected so they make their proposals explicit, as campaign promises; and even then there is a good chance they will try to find ways around giving up some of those powers if they get elected. I am almost willing to predict that if you continue the Honest Government Ads (and I hope you do) if there is a change of government (with Labor/Shorten in power), you could run an almost identical "My Police State" ad. I hope I'm wrong, but I'm definitely worried. Thanks for your outstanding work in defense of democracy.

T

"clear" would also be ok.

T

If you look a Labor's track record, they seem to vote with the coalition on whistleblowing: <a href="https://theyvoteforyou.org.au/policies/90" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://theyvoteforyou.org.au/policies/90</a> <a href="https://theyvoteforyou.org.au/policies/119" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://theyvoteforyou.org.au/policies/119</a> , and surveillance: <a href="https://theyvoteforyou.org.au/policies/44" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://theyvoteforyou.org.au/policies/44</a> . The only parties consistently voting against the coalition on those issues are the Greens and the Liberal Democrats. Maybe Labor are more open to pressure on these issues (particularly if they lose seats to the Greens). But that's as good as it gets.

Jay Wilson

Just when I believed you couldn't possibly top your last script, you do! Brilliant! Sigh... I reckon the best we can realistically hope for is that the Greens will once again hold the balance of power in the Senate, right? But hey, don't get me wrong, I have dreams too... like Steve Keen being appointed Treasurer in a Govt of national unity! :)

thejuicemedia

Yes! We were just discussing this on our morning walk and we also thought "clear" would work - thanks for the help T!

thejuicemedia

I've been learning a lot about economics from "Can we avoid another financial crisis", thanks Steve :)

thejuicemedia

Aw never had such an enthusiastic response to a preview - tysm for the extra love! That's just given me a nice warm morning boost for today's mega editing slog! Stickers will be on their way once this video is out :)

thejuicemedia

Thanks Jay - yes in light of what Benito and Steve mention above, that would be a very good outcome for our democracy

thejuicemedia

Benito, so glad to see your comment here! Firstly, I've been trying in vain to reach you via Patreon/email to check if you'd like to receive your stickers! (If so, I just need a postal address - which you can send via private message).

thejuicemedia

Secondly, absolutely agree with your comment above - Labor has been completely acquiescent in bringing on this erosion of civil liberties - in fact, when in power they first proposed mandatory data retention. I chose "You can opt out at the next federal election" because it doesn't actually say that we should vote in Labor - the vote could also be for the Greens, for example. But I get your point! And given that a few people here have raised this point, I've included a disclaimer at the very end to make it clear Labor is just as bad on civil liberties.

thejuicemedia

Thanks again for all your awesome feedback peeps!

thejuicemedia

Aye - Labor were the ones to first propose the mandatory data retention scheme. They are just as bad on civil liberties - and are constantly caving in to the Coalition as soon as the vague notion of "national security" is so much as mentioned.

Robyn

I love the "opt out at the next election" thing that people suggested.. sounds great.. though I also agree (unfortunately) that Labor so often given in to the government and are often just as bad..

thejuicemedia

Thanks Robyn, will definitely take the suggestion on board for that final line!

Robert Hulands

Me thinks our Benito is an LNP plant paid by Scomo and Mal et al.

canberrastreets

Timing is everything. With Shorten calling for Turnbull to resign straight after he kills off his company tax policy, it turned my mind to what Dutton could achieve as replacement PM before he is forced to the polls. 18 May is quite a long way off. *shudders*

thejuicemedia

Hi Robert, I'm not sure what gives you that impression, Benito's observation is pretty well supported by the evidence - but in any case, can you please refrain from making personal comments about other posters here - this is just a thread to discuss the video so if you have any feedback or suggestions pls lmk - otherwise please save it for the comments when the video is live :)

Rafael A

Great script. As always. Thank you for the preview. I agree with some of the other comments here regarding opt out at the next election... yes, important, and yes helps build the satirical case on My Health records but also somewhat esoteric and it is very difficult to let Labor off the hook here, which I think the video inadvertently does a bit, especially with that line.

thejuicemedia

Thanks Rafael - I'm really stoked that so many people here are switched on about Labor's role in all this - I feel blessed to have a woke bunch of Patrons haha so will certainly tweak that final line to reflect people's valid concerns!

Chris Barker

I am concerned you WILL be on the receiving end of the police state you refer to for one simple reason - they do not accept adverse comment well and satire that is true even less well. Recommend you create your own State counter terrorist JuiceMedia guards force. Look for the non genuine satire police charge sheet in the mail.

Ragnarok

The two political parties may differ on some often trivial concerns but they both fall over each other to sell out the privacy and freedom of the people. Those in power (no matter which party is in power) seek to maintain the status quo of power, profit, and control.

Caroline Davidson

Hey Team, Just brilliant. My hearing is not great, as in crowdednoisy rooms - really hard to focus on a conversation. I find the background music is too loud and I miss some of your very tight script. I love it, I just have to play it a few times.

Marissa Theodore

Fantastic work and saliently on-point as always. I do agree with the opinions expressed about the "op-out at the next election" ending that others commenting here have also mentioned, which as someone else suggested could be clarified with a visual. I believe the exact same line of dialogue would also work if delivered with sarcasm. A lot of us obviously realise the two-party preference has all the appearance of choice with none of the actuality of it but finding a way to clearly call this out at the end of the video would really drive home the point - just like The Simpsons did in the episode where space aliens Kodos and Kang impersonate presidential candidates Bill Clinton and Bob Dole. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=chFaesfO7fQ" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=chFaesfO7fQ</a>

thejuicemedia

Thanks Caroline! I will check the music levels :)

thejuicemedia

Haha that was a great Simpsons snippet! Thanks for chiming in Marissa, so great to get so much feedback from everyone! <3

Thomas James

I do like the emphasis on the creeping authoritiarianism and something more people should be more aware of and resist.

Dave Ostler

Hi all you Juicers! I understand the concerns regarding the 'opt-out' line but, hey, you've got to start somewhere. It is the same as when people argue that getting rid of Trump will only allow Pence to have his shot at destroying civilization so be careful what you wish for. My reply is always, one prick at a time. I'm new to Australian politics and could just be spouting nonsense, but in my 'battles' against the rabid of the right in Canada, the US and UK I've always advocated for fighting against the one in front of you. If you have to gird you loins for the one standing right behind, then that's just the way things are. This battle is going to be long term.

thejuicemedia

:D cheers Dave, "one prick at a time" sounds like a good strategy until we find a better solution! Thanks so much for supporting us from Canada - I hope it won't be too long before we make an HGA about your own Government. Oh and thanks so much for raising your pledge - will message you about in a dm now too <3
