Ah this is cutting into the bone. Similar dynamic here in the UK. Seems like corrupt politicians the world over have commodified housing leading to this tsunami of greed washing away people's hard fought living standards and security. Total shitbags.

Mark D Larsen

Ooooh, my… I see that housing shitfuckery is not isolated to these Feudal States of America: you're facing the same laissez-faire capitalistic mammon-loving Down Under. We really, truly need to finally implement FDR's 2nd Bill of Economic Rights worldwide, one of which is "The right of every family to a decent home."

David Bishton

Just when the doom scrolling has worn you out, JM comes up with another great (and cheerfully profane) ad to bring back your energy!

L Lee Hinds

Thanks ladies for telling it just like it is. Same shitshow in the US Banana Republic except they have a plan for Marshall Law at some point ☝️ in the near future. Just like China. Stay well keep up the good fight.

Alan Marel

Well done and well said Giordano. Another cracker!

Adam

Spot on as always. It's a completely psychopathic idea to make profit on living essentials. "Investment" properties are an obscene idea. Empty houses, insane prices and mass homelessness. What's that song? Hang the landlord?

Jason Orcamoon

All also true in the USA; plus we have been seeing a HUGE influx of foreign money and hedge funds turning homes into rentals, both long-term with the problems you point out, AND short-term, AirBNB type properties. A slight advantage the USA has are many fixed-rate mortgages. Sounds like Australia and New Zealand are mainly variable-rate mortgages that will force current homeowners into foreclosure and add them to the rental demand.

John

Sounds great 👍 I'll miss the regular calculator but though, could use a "all these policies to help you add up too... Tap tap tap... Fuck all 😄

Mizu

Houses being a 'market' in the first place is pretty ick, all told, and I welcome the idea of dismantling 'investment properties' and their ilk. Renters should get better protection laws too, so they can't get booted at-will, forced to take on rent increases every few months due to interest hikes, the ability to customise the house internally, no 3-month visits from the rental agency to make sure you're keeping the place clean and unmodified, etc.

Bladeless Knife Productions

As an American, this is both news to me and quite familiar. Don't forget all the homes and apartments kept vacant to use as vacation rentals.

Peter M

Great work, sure to stir up some feeling given what a shit show housing is for many these days. Damning really in a country of such scale and wealth, probably costs us more in poverty, distress, and subsequent physical and mental health problems than just providing more quality housing

Fenrir Wolfganger

Sad to say same story here in Ireland. My family are one of the lucky ones with Social Housing and it truly makes such a change in your life and what you can do. Spot on, accurate and bleakly hilarious as always.

frank pires

good use of the word aspirational; the lack of social housing is the biggest issue in the rental market and good to see that it got a mention though the fact that state and territory govt. have reduced their social housing didn't really get highlighted. There needs to be a big injection in social housing and sadly atm it's difficult to build anything given the materials supply problems. all said great work crew :)

Lynne Donnelly

Brilliant and right on topic. Big policy issue (for the Greens) in both the Federal and recent Victorian state elections. Where I live in coastal regional Victoria there is a huge rental crisis driven by the 60% unoccupancy rates from holiday/investment/airbnb. Streets full of empty houses.

Kim, Dohoon

Love it from Korea :) We're having the same problem here as well.

Christine Connors

Agree with Lynne. The other driver not covered is holiday homes and AirBnB which has taken huge amounts of houses off the market

Tim

Holiday homes and AirBnB are I suggest linked to tax benefits and self managed super annuation bullshit. Great to call out crap legal protection to tenants, that deserves national policy...

Leigh Callinan

That is funny but true. I hope it wakes people up to the causes of the housing crisis in Australia
