In my tism I thought the shock was regard to her treating Joe like an object to throw at a situation she was uncomfortable with, then I thought everyone was shocked at her calling him a boyfriend and now reading the comments I think it is the f word so I don't know everyone is shocked with anymore.

My mom didn't even know what the word "fuck" meant until she was in her late fifties. She's Swedish, and in modern Swedish that loanword is used as a swear but never as a word for sexual intercourse.

@Gale Tazzin: Two significant differences here: a) everyone in Joyce's friend group knows that she's never said it before, and b) there doesn't appear to have been any calculation on Joyce's part about dropping the word - in fact, she clearly doesn't even realize she actually did it.
