I'd always intended for Joyce's first f-bomb to be an accidental, casual thing. It's funnier that way! And more true to life. I just wanted it to slip out of her mouth one day. But when drawing the kidnapping story, I briefly considered deterring from the plan to give her her first f-bomb here. I mean, if you're gonna swear, it's a good time to do so.

But 1) I already did the MEANINGFUL CURSING during the first Becky kidnapping story, which caused Joyce to shout "GODDAMMIT!" to the heavens. We're just repeating that here. No new ground is tread, really. And 2) this kidnapping story needs to move forward and there's no breathing room to consider Joyce's f-bomb. So I'd just be wasting it.

And so I drew Joyce back to a simple "goddamned" and saved her first f-bomb for a future time as originally planned. Too bad, though, woulda been on my birthday.

Why did I settle on the f-bomb dropping yesterday? well to tell the truth i just kind of accidentally wrote her an f-bomb, realized what i'd done, realized... wait, this is exactly what i wanted, actually, and so then kept it

it was literally on accident, and i had that narrative room to explore it now

plus, like, the ongoing theme of this storyline is whether we remain ourselves as we change, so wait i should erase those past few paragraphs so i seem smarter and plan-ier YES I DID IT ON PURPOSE AT THIS POINT IN THE STORY, I AM THE WRITING MASTER

It was some serious whiplash to see that again after the more recent light hearted strips

Doc Brown

Honestly, I totally missed that it was her first "fuck" because I'm used to it getting dropped by other characters/young people all the time. I was honestly waiting until today to find out what she had said that was such a big deal... I MEAN, YES! OF COURSE I HAVE GOOD LITERACY SKILLS! YOU ARE AN AMAZING AUTHOR, AND I'VE BEEN FOLLOWING ALONG FOR YEARS!!!

Kelly (they-them)

You joke but if you've been considering this for four years then I'm inclined to agree: you ARE the writing master

Giant Speck

Holy shit, Toe Dad jump scare.

Amós Batista

I always knew Joyce would talk it by accident, too. Great work, Willis.

C

Both moments work in different ways for dropping the f-bomb.

Jey Siksa

I think for the trajectory of character development the slip was the better use, though cinematic ad perfectly edgy this F bomb is, it will stain Joyce cursing with this moment for always and eternity

Jen

As someone who also doesn’t really curse, Joyce’s first f-bomb and her friends’ reaction to it also felt really authentic to me. (My husband used to joke that he could only count the times he heard me swear on one hand. I just asked him and he proudly said “It’s up to two [hands] now!”)

Maude Reads Things

I think both work for different character moments but if it's gonna be A Thing, I agree, it works better casually

Gabriel Burns

Really? I'm surprised. Back when I was younger, I didn't curse, and when I started, every swear word was very intentional. I was just thinking yesterday how unrealistic it was that Joyce would drop her first f-bomb ever so naturally. I guess we're all different.

MacIntyre really was a total shit as a person and probably a rabid (for real) supporter of fuckin' Donald Trump.

David M Willis

honestly no probably about it -- blaine was a trump analogue, a mobstery jackhole who got a bunch of fundies to think he was on their side despite clearly being a cheating definitely-not-christian jag, enshrined in their minds as a saviour simply because he promised to attack the same people they hated toedad in this strip is kind of laying that subtext out

MacTosh

How do they not have PTSD from their first year of college being this nuts…

Josh Whelan

Ngl I liked how casually she said it

Josh Whelan

Yeah I didn't catch it initially either. I figured it out once I read the comments and it hit me.

Karel P Kerezman

How it ended up is the superior result, absolutely. Three sets of eyebrows simply leaping into empty air, and Joyce not realizing yet what she's uttered.

Ashley Thomas

yeah i like it better as a funny thing.

Congratulations on doing something accidentally on purpose on purpose. When I was little, my siblings would accuse me of doing things accidentally on purpose. I protested if it was an accident, it wasn't on purpose. And they never were things I did on purpose. About half the time, I hadn't realized I had. And, looking back, knowing how my brother behaved... I suspect that I hadn't, that I had been framed. I mean, there were times when I knew he framed me for stuff, why did I not suspect him of framing me for things when I wasn't aware of the action? But this shows how doing something accidentally could have been intended, and how one could actually pull it off. I never did something like that. I'm not trying to say i was always good. But many of those things just weren't things I was imaginative enough to have chosen as my thing to accidentally do.

Some Ed

Just to be clear, I'm not talking about the times I did things deliberately and claimed they were accidents. They may have been declared as accidents on purpose, but I know they were very much not accidents. Also, I think the claims I had done stuff accidentally on purpose came first. Possibly even the times I was framed and it was characterized like that.

David Grimes

Sometimes David... God chooses to enact his perfect will through an imperfect agent.

Daibhid Ceannaideach

Interesting. I think I'm more like Jen (and Joyce), in that I never thought "I should start cursing now", some words - like "bloody" - just started entering my speech occasionally and I thought "Oh, I guess I'm okay with saying that, then." (Many, the f-word included, still haven't.)
