Who Izzy

This fuck-twit

C

Some people handle emotion differently Gramps. That doesn't mean someone's not upset.

Fart Captor

Now I have sad everywhere :(

Maude Reads Things

....I'm glad this strip isn't public. I can only imagine the Clint defenders if it were.

MatsuoTanuki

Go suck a rusty tailpipe Clint.

Maude Reads Things

I have a feeling Clint's abuse of his grandkids started before their parents died. Even without his passive aggressive fuckery in the last panel, Howard's reaction to hearing he'd be there soon was that he'd stop crying. That.....doesn't seem normal. I'd say maybe it's because he doesn't like people seeing him cry, but he's clearly got no problem with Ruth being there.

Dalrint

...There are Clint defenders?

Bagge

WHY DID WE ASK FOR A STRIP MAKING US THIS SAD???

Bagge

In Clint's defence, he managed four words that were not horrible. ...yeah, that's about as well as I can defend him.

Bagge

I DON'T KNOW! BUT I STILL DO!

Jasmijn Wellner

he's a white dude, of course he has defenders

Jasmijn Wellner

*sob* TAKE MY MONEY *sob* JUST TAKE IT ALL *sob*

Jon Barker

For the record, I did not request this. I DO NOT WANT THESE FEELS

Ryan Malcolm

Pain is a curious thing. Just about everyone sees themselves as the hero of their own story, that the horrible things they do are justified and needed while not realising that no they aren't.

Michelle

I can only assume this means that there are Clint defenders on the main site which makes me glad that I don't read those comments.

Caitacular

You bastards, this is why I wanted anyone else! I didn't need these intense feels at 8 in the morning :/

Anna Phylaxis

starting to play them off each other the fucking moment he arrived. Dude was an abuser dyed in the wool.

Maude Reads Things

Literally every character who exists to abuse has defenders on the main site at some point. We call it the That Guy. They operate in three phases: 1) Denying what the character did was actually bad ("Mary just wanted to study!" "Ruth's mentally ill and misinterpreted Clint's tough love and non-demonstrative attitude!" "Toe dad is just worried about Becky running away!"). 2) When it can't be denied anymore, people proceed to complain it's unrealistic and Willis is a bad writer who doesn't write nuance and 3) Victim blaming or talking about how they'd TOTALLY handle this situation better.

Packy Anderson

See, I think Willis is the BEST writer because he follows the best rules for villains: every villain should be the hero of their own narrative. Mary DID want to study, and she can't abide by all these un-Godly people making life in the dorm unlivable. Ross was not only worried about losing his daughter PERSONALLY, he feared for her losing her mortal soul. Clint... I guess Clint sees this as the opportunity for him to reverse the damage done to his family by his daughter's mistake of marrying Ruth and Howard's dad. None of this excuses anything that they've done, but it provides the lens through which their actions are not completely *incomprehensible*. They're not evil for the sake of being evil (well, maybe Blaine is evil for the sake of being Evil; I'm still trying to figure out a way of looking at him as anything but the villain that spawned Amazi-Girl). They have motivations that drive their actions and those motivations MAKE SENSE, even if we don't AGREE with them or if it's pretty clear that the character's worldview is completely fucked up. But the moment a character has realistic motivations that look familiar to people, there will be people who defend their actions as being acceptable given their motivations, no matter how UN-acceptable those actions are, because they identify with those motivations. These "That Guy"s don't want to admit that the motivations they identify so much with can lead to horrific actions.

Maude Reads Things

Pretty much. A villain doesn't need to be sympathetic - they need to have positive and negative traits and a backstory and motivation that make sense. Mary, Clint, and Blaine all have those (well, granted, we don't have much backstory, but we can gather a decent bit - Blaine's the asshole controlling guy who thinks he can 'toughen up' people by being a huge cockbite.)

Betsy

Oh, ouch. I'm 90% sure I voted for Howard, and now I'm not sure why I voted for something guaranteed to hit me with the feels.

Cambísima

Ouch, yeah, I missed that. I was about to say, "Jesus, Clint. What in the hell twisted your soul to make you such a f*ck from day 1 of this tragedy??" ...But clearly this was already Day 1+n for these kids. D:

Kirt Dankmyer

I guess I should have expected something like this when I nominated Howard. Took me a minute to fully grok all the details. Well played, Willis.

Loren

SOME OF US VOTED FOR THE OTHER ONE SOME OF US BEING ME
