Jim Farmer

This feels like a "Yes/and" situation.

darklion

and i still don't get it

SomeKindaNerd

I think the "it's butter" adds comedic value, but I honestly do prefer it without.

JTFree

The butter line feels weird. We, the reader, can't see anything on her hand. I assumed it was just the act of having not washed it since that was the issue. Now I'm wondering what course of events led to butter being there. Did she touch the penis first then got into the food? Was it there the whole time. Was the butter a part of it? It muddies the waters of the joke a bit.

Maude Reads Things

I didn't even see the butter one but I presume the current one is superior

Harold

@darklion: Unless you're doing a bit (which I have no reason to assume you are), the joke with the butter is that Sarah sees stuff on Joyce's hand and assumes that it's... from Joe. (As in, produced by Joe, as the outcome of Joyce touching him.) A presumably mortified Joyce informs Sarah that what she saw is butter, from the mac and cheese dinner. This original version of the strip indicates that Sarah's assumption is actually correct.

darklion

A half-bit, maybe. This strip just doesn't work, and I'm trying to be circumcised about it.

Avian

Less is more, the ambiguity makes it funnier

ThatOneGuy

Yeah, I really have no clue what the butter was about. I was very confused.

Girlycore

I think it works both ways, but given the amount of confusion around the butter line, probably best to use this version instead on the main site.

Girlycore

Also not sure why Joyce wouldn't know to wash butter off her hand tbh. This version is better for two reasons now.

Girlycore

I really hope you meant circumspect and your phone just autocorrected it to hell.

Ste Saunders

I didn't understand the butter thing. If it was just butter, wouldn't Joyce have just washed it off in Joe's bathroom? Presumably she's touched butter before. And even if she hadn't, the way she asks about washing it off is a bit weird if it's a known substance.

Dan Rabin

It's a close call, but the non-dairy version suggests Joyce dealing with a very real part of her new world, which fits in with the plot thread.

Phil_M

Put me down as preferring this one. The line about butter just left me wondering how on earth Joyce gut butter on her hand, which distracted from the points of the strip — Joyce’s emotional development and Sarah’s new shell cracking. I mean, if you could come up with a funny and plausible thing for Joyce to have on her hand, sure, go with that instead. Jokes are a good thing in comic strips. But I can’t think of anything. (Macaroni cheese sauce?) (Edit: Also, deleting the butter says something about Joe’s situation. He’s previously admitted that all this self-restraint isn’t 100% easy for him. To put it crudely, if he gets a few handjobs from Joyce, it might tell the regular readers why he *isn’t* resorting to heroin.)

Kazo

Honest answer? Didn't like either. Felt it could have ended on the previous comic.

Rob McBobson

You took the words out of my mouth. I thought she might be confusing a bar of soap and a stick of butter, and wondered where she could possibly expect a bar of soap and find butter instead. (thanks again to Girlycore for explaining)

Rob McBobson

It does have a joke, but that joke is in the third panel. (Also, the final panel is a light joke too, a sort of exhausted "I've had enough, I'm going to bed".)

The Great Butterfingers Debate of 2024

David M Willis

for me, the joke is that in the last minute of the storyline, joyce breaks through sarah's facade and she makes the worst/best face possible

Harold

CONFIRMED: The butter is gone, people! THE BUTTER IS GONE!

Maude Reads Things

Ah. Never mind, I just needed to scroll more on the strip below this.

Harold

...and I've just gone back to the main site and realized the funniest part: Willis has tagged Joe in the strip. Oh, my God.

Sajuuk-Khar

I love that Joe is tagged Bravo, Willis

Taigan

Never saw the butter version. 🤷‍♀️

berryquiche

Oh apparently I missed the butter version entirely lol

Captain Button

Umm, I don't get it, because *I don't see anything about butter* in *either* *version*, either the one on the site or the one here. DYW only mentions butter in the explanation for this unused strip. WTF?

Henri Black

This is the exact same strip that went up on the site as far as I can tell...

areyoshi

Same issue tbh

berryquiche

If I'm following the timeline correctly: - Willis initially uploads the above strip to the main site - They change their mind and replace it with the Butter Cut - At some point shortly after this Patreon post, they change their mind again and restore this version to the main site.

Harold

@Captain Button: When Willis initially uploaded the early update for the October 31 strip to this Patreon, there was an off-panel speech bubble from Joyce in the final panel in which she responds to Sarah's disgust at her gooey hand by yelling "IT'S BUTTER!" (That version is still here, by the way, as far as I can see.) He posted the butter-free version as an unused strip, but our reactions persuaded him to change his mind, and it is now the official strip.

Ernie Dude

This looks like the actually published strip, not an unused one.

Harold

@Ernie Dude: It did end up being the published strip. As Willis notes in the text underneath the strip, "I could be persuaded to put it back this way"; he was, in fact, persuaded.

Ernie Dude

Ah, so it was switched back. So we missed the Alternate version that was temporarily the "real" version.

Harold

We didn't miss it - it was posted to this Patreon as the initial early update strip for October 31. As far as I can see, it's still there.

Steve Campbell

Personally, I think the "butter" punchline makes for a funnier comic, but I realize Willis will always defer to character beats..
