Aranda Adams

I am interpreting this to mean Ryan is afraid of Joyce because that makes me feel better dammit

C

Wasn't that when Joyce was seeing Ryan's face everywhere? If so, that's interesting timing.

Giant Speck

This is from the same scene where Joyce starts seeing him everywhere, right?

Fart Captor

I think this is when she left class to find Becky.

sjmcc13

It could also be misplaced rage seeping through.

Fart Captor

She was LOOKING for Becky. She FOUND Ethan.

James Gall

No hoodie, so I'm guessing this was before his picture hit social media.

Mike Wise

Umm... is she walking backwards up the stairs?

Lisa

I think she's hesitating and backtracking because she's afraid to be outside alone, although she's determined.

Bagge

I actually thought this would be a plot point - that just as Joyce and we started to grow accustomed to see Ryan everywhere one of them would turn out to be real.

Daniel Adams

Oh the irony Ryan, the irony.... Also terrifying to know that Joyce's psychological manifestations of him helped hide his re emergence.

Flounder

Hooooooooooly shit.

David M Willis

As some others above have pointed out, today is a recontextualized version of the older strip here: http://www.dumbingofage.com/2015/comic/book-5/02-threes-a-crowd/trauma/ At the time, I didn't have any plans to use Ryan again, but in case I did, I kinda seeded him here in case I needed another anchor point. There was a Ryan that was always standing behind Joyce, who Joyce couldn't have been replacing another person with in her mind, who also stopped and looked at her as he opened the door. If I never decided to bring Ryan back, he could have remained hidden forever. But since I did, he has a class here which starts halfway through Leslie's gender studies class, and the only chance you'd have to run into him is if you left the class halfway through. And so that's why Dorothy, Joe, and Walky near-miss him on their way out of Roz's Fill-In Day. PROBABLY NOT GONNA SEE RYAN AGAIN so I figured why not put the rest of my cards out on the table.

Spencer

oh dear Thanks for sharing! If this isn't too spoilery a question, what made you want to bring Ryan back?

Maude Reads Things

I'm hoping that last sentence means he was arrested and not murdered.

Aranda Adams

BBCC - Aren't we all hoping for that

David M Willis

Spencer: In the Robin's Rally sequence, when Amazi-Girl and Sal come to an understanding with each other, I needed a criminal who Sal would regard and say, "Yeah, okay, let's beat the shit outta this guy, I get you on this." And Ryan was a pre-existing intersection between the two characters who would have been much more effective than somebody new. And when I realized this, I was like... oh, man, am i gonna hafta draw ryan again goddammit

JuanA

Blast... Dang you context!

Ryan Kertai

Do Universities actually stagger class start times like that? Where I went everything fit into common periods. What if a student was taking both classes where one starts halfway through the other?

Spencer

That makes sense. Thanks for the insight! I am actually genuinely shocked that this is the end of Ryan. I thought for sure we'd have one last pow wow where Amazi-Girl has to bring him down, but now that I think about it taking him down like this, in such a brutal and pointedly non-cathartic way, is for the best, and I'm really excited to see how this is going to move forward for Amber's character development.

David M Willis

Ryan: Some class lengths are different than others, which necessitates some overlap like that. I remember fighting with these overlaps when scheduling my own classes.

Maude Reads Things

@ Ryan - ...Yes? At least some do? Mine has classes all day from 7 AM (I think) to 11PM. If two of your classes overlap, you have to drop one.

sjmcc13

The university I went to had 3 basic schedules, 3 days a week at just under an hours each (I think 50 mins, and 10 to get across campus to your next class), 2 days a week (Mostly Tuesday/Thursday but I think there was also Monday/Wednesday) at 75 minutes and 1 day a week (pretty much every evening class was this) at 150 Mins (in the few I took the prof usually gave us a little short break in the middle and went on for a extra time equal to the break). The 2 day a week periods started every hour and a half.

Moonrunes

So was Joyce was never going to get resolution from this and it was just tossed at Sal and Amber so they could have a conflict to agree upon? I'm not sure how I feel about that.

Spencer

Joyce shouldn't have to lift a finger to get justice.

David M Willis

IfIiBleeds, no. Joyce already put a hole in his face. She shouldn't have to see or think about him ever again. The idea that it's important to her narrative to have to deal with him, that she has to have "resolution" somehow... I really really don't like that idea. It reinforces the idea that Ryan is her problem to solve, which is not something I want to convey. I prefer the idea that Ryan is such a worthless shit of a person that he marched himself into his own doom, a doom that just so happened to be constructed of the people in Joyce's life, a shield around her born of her weaponized humanity. The greatest victory here is that Joyce herself didn't have to do shit.

minderrific

@David Willis I'm so glad that was the intended reading! Because honestly until I know the fallout / consequences (which are often more surprising than the final twists in a storyline in their lenience, but if it's bad, I will wait) of this sequence to contextualize exactly what scope of Amber's tomorrow looks like, I am…gonna take from spinning doom circles in the sky and just fucking cheer about Ryan getting beaten to shit and then knifed because hell yes. I wouldn't be sorry if he died except that it'd break a seven-year nonkill streak

T Campbell

A nice window into the process, and I'd expect no less. I respectfully disagree, though, that there was no call to use Ryan again besides the convenience of putting Sal and Amazi-Girl on the same side. I mean yes, in the real world, people wrong us in all sorts of ways and then fade into the background or vanish entirely and we have to seek out closure on our own terms. Fiction's sometimes tidier than that, though, and the way Ryan departed the narrative always felt like a question in need of an answer.

Next: that guy tries bullying a dragon.

Betsy

Holy shit.

Eric and Wednesday Burns-White

Always love to see T's take on a thing. As for me -- I fall somewhere in the middle. On the one hand, the thematic culmination of Ryan's appearance, false defeat, and now true defeat is handled beautifully and gives us a sense of dramatic closure that makes perfect sense, especially since it involved Amber taking Ryan's knife and doing an implied injury to him with it the same as she did to Sal once upon a time... and gives us a chance for the caul of hero worship to be torn from Dorothy's eyes all at the same time. On the other hand, the symbol of Ryan's face being everywhere, then slowly fading from Joyce's life as she deals with her traumas and takes agency into her hands, down to protecting Becky as Sarah, Sal, Dorothy and Amazi-Girl protected her is a powerful story in its own right. Joyce ultimately didn't need to have Ryan return, because her story involved transcending the wound he gave her, in the exact way Ryan didn't transcend the wound she gave him.
