Ahh, right. I shelved the Walky/Amber conversation so I could get back to Becky/Dina first. Here's a different continuation from Becky's "You're right, Dina, God is fake."

This try at it kind of speedran through the datapoints I wanted. I started over and let things simmer across a few different strips instead.

Also, by letting Becky wander off halfway through, it let Dina stew in these thoughts a bit before we return to both of them later.

I Know Why the Mowed Lawn Screams

would have been crazy to have Becky in the room when Amber revealed that Joyce + Dorothy kissed, but letting Dina stew in it before talking to Becky was the better choice methinks

It’s so interesting seeing how you rework things for the better. Def like what we got more

Rob McBobson

This is a backhanded compliment, I guess but I agree that the new version is better. I get that emotions tend to be irrational. If knowledge of, say, the Holocaust didn't shake somebody's faith then it's weird that objectively less bad things would, but again, I get that emotions are irrational. But still, actually having Dina say basically "This is worse than all these other things" and Becky not objecting with something like "Not objectively worse, but..." just wouldn't work for me, story-wise. (Or do I mean "characterization-wise"?) The actual published strip is much, much better. Good choice.

Astariel

I realize it's been implied by other strips, but having Becky explicitly say that Joyce & Dorothy kissing means god must be evil or nonexistent is a real hammer blow.

@Rob McBobson I like that it gave all involved an extra moment to breathe and process it all. Lot of "show, don't tell" that paid off pretty well.

Rob McBobson

Agreed. Pacing counts so much, especially in tense moments like this.

@Astariel Bit of the old Chicxulub impact, isn't it.[1] [2] (._.) [1] - Both because it's the thing commonly believed to have killed off the [Terrible Lizbians], and because there's some debate about whether or not that's actually what did it. [2] - Google sees fit to have an asteroid animation fly across the screen and shake it if you search for "Chicxulub", apparently (>.<;)

@I Know Why...[1] Yeah, I would think Becky might have lunged at her or something. [1] - Any chance you're a Culture fan? Your name just made me think of the GSV " Mistake Not..."

Tessea

It's still painful to see how.... scared Dina looks in that last panel. But I do think you made the right choice. Spreading things out a bit has a better flow.

I had Gemini copy the word to search it and it triggered the astroid on top of these comments.

Megh

The thing Dina says in the old version about the cancer is making me wonder does Dina not know why Becky's mom actually died? I'm pretty sure the topic has come up in Dina strips before Was she saying that in case Amber didn't know?

Megh

gotcha thanks for clarifying!

GundamBradley

I feel like the way this ended up playing out in the actual comic works better. I feel like Dina can still feel a way about all of this without it meaning assigning a value of Bad to different events, like I can believe it'd be a culmination of things for Becky, but that the bigger issue was Becky pushing Dina away and not working it out with her. It definitely makes Dina come off less like she's prioritizing the wrong things and not giving Becky a moment if Becky is the one who is being hasty.

Maude Reads Things

Making it slower is almost always a good call but it does increase our suffering

DramaQueen

The way you actually published is a lot more of a gut-punch, a lot more emotionally devastating for the audience. The first draft reads almost like a sit-com joke or as if Dina is seriously doubting Becky’s sanity and grip on reality, and is wondering if she (Dina) even knows Becky at all.

@BBCC: Then Willis's work here is done

MrShoggoth

I love using Chicxulub has a shorthand for something catastrophic. That impactor hit in the absolute worst place it could have hit and caused way more damage than it would have in any other place. Very appropriate here!

(It’s a Maya Angelou reference, though)

Between the breathing room and the additional context of more body language, yeah, Good Call here too. The bonus dissociated stares to emphasize Dina’s slowly dawning realization, in contrast with her directness, really make things pop. I’m absolutely not saying I dislike the first piece (same as the last one of these), but it does show where the second pass enhances the moment very, very well. Thank you for posting these!
