Becky having some complex feelings right now

KittyKai

LET THE AWKWARDNESS COMMENCE

Lazuli

so this is going uh

William Lewis

That is _so_ perfectly Dorothy... 😎

Rob McBobson

You mean "notarized", Dorothy. You're too clever to speak with typos. :)

Andrea Andrew

I guess they won’t stay clean for long. Especially with how entranced Dorothy is by Becky’s haircut.

Bayard Brewin

Too late to point out the typo? 🤨

Jeremy AR

Honestly i am surprised this didn't happen way earlier.

LupinThe8th

This conversation definitely had to happen at some point. And it's starting out in the most Dorothy way possible.

jefe

You'll want to correct "notarized" I think?

jafortee

Sorry Ruth, your wellness check may have missed Becky’s crash out by mere seconds

Rob McBobson

Later than me, earlier than Jeffrey, so it's kind of in the middle.

Sajuuk-Khar

Becky: Aw, Dotty, I toldja before. It ain’t your fault! It’s part of how I’m fundamentally unlovable an’ the universe is a black an’ evil place where dark planets roll without aim! That’s all. 😅

Dot

It’s “notarized”

Edwin I Callahan

Come on, everybody, you knew Dorothy was exactly that.

Dot

Have to wonder who notarized it. Who am I kidding it was Robin and she did it for a Twinkie

Harold

Notarin', what's your price for flight

Smoochie

Going off panel 4, continuing to hold onto the theory that Dotty gets absolutely nothing of any angst or frustration from Becky

ArdieBea

Very glad we may be getting this conversation. Crossing all my fingers and toes that Becky can be a bit more real with Dorothy than with Ruth. Maybe even get mad at Dorothy for 'tattling' if she refuses to acknowledge what's actually happening?

Harold

Don't ever change, Dotty

Railway Series Book Club

the only path forward re: becky feeling better is for joyce to let becky work out her explosive feelings through dorothy, sexually. this is why becky and dorothy should make out and fuck. #bookburning (this is the name of the becky/dorothy ship, i've decided)

GundamBradley

There will come a day when Dorothy will learn that this shit just insults people and makes things worse. This will not be that day.

Sajuuk-Khar

I don’t for a minute believe Becky will get mad at Dorps! No, that would be too easy. She’s going to smile and say self-destructive horrible shit with a relatively straight face.

Dot

She charges industry rate, though. Robin is cheaper.

Harold

@Dot: "I've done a lot more for a lot less"

C.T. Phipps

9 bucks says Becky will just say, "Who wouldn't fall in love with Joyce! She's perfect!" Which will make it worse.

Crunchos cereal

Yeah, I think Joyce is the problem here. Or rather Becky’s attitude to Joyce. Becky played the nemesis thing for longer than was maybe necessary, but I think these two might be good friends, if in a difficult situation.

Sajuuk-Khar

If Dotty gets anything it’s going to be plainly stated bleak shit

5099 5618 v2.0

"These forms need to be signed in triplicate and filed at the courthouse before they can be accepted as official records, Dorothy. I thought you, of all people, would have the kind of attention to detail required to competently handle legal paperwork. Perhaps I overestimated you. "Anyway, I just wanted you to be the first to know I got a full scholarship to Harvard. I'll be transferring in the fall. Don't tell Joyce, ok?" - Becky's maximum evil dialogue option, for this instance

Logibear

Not helping Dot

Smoochie

@Crunchos Becky will probably be Dorothy’s sounding off board when the honeymoon period gets a little rocky… @S-K +10 points if Becky goes full “I know you love her and you deserve her but understand that she worships you—take a good look at me, how much I /worshipped/ her and think about your next move.” But you know—sounding more like Becky

voyager-ngc5195

Wow, Dorothy didn't just immediately burst into flames under Becky's gaze! Well I'd certainly call that a massive win for all parties involved.

Astariel

Damn, when'd she have time to find a notary? You gotta give Dorothy credit for attention to detail.

5099 5618 v2.0

Not yet, she didn't. Matches take a moment to catch once you strike them.

Sajuuk-Khar

i.e. “Look, just yer fallin’ fer Joyce weren’t what made Dina realize I’m worthless! That woulda happened anyway, Dotty. Turns out all my happiness, ever, was built on lies! :D”

Vivian

Now that's what I call leadership!

Lazuli

i dont think becky will read it and will kinda drift away from joyce by inches

Dan Rabin

1. The Becky-alone first panel is a scene-setting borderless panel. 2. The three succeeding panels are an interesting use of the repeat-with-variations technique, involving both characters *not* having a conversation. Dorothy holds her tongue until Becky senses her presence and looks at her. Panel 3 dialogue is stuff anybody in this situation might say; Panel 4 dialogue is a Dorothy joke pure and simple, with her pulling the document out of the bag being the only below-the-neck motion in the whole strip. 3. Do notaries public put their seal on formal letters of apology not written in neat cursive script? https://www.dumbingofage.com/2016/comic/book-6/03-when-god-closes-the-door/personal-2/

The Lurker

I always figured Dorothy WAS a notary, given her personality.

Smoochie

Dorothy kicking off her 18th birthday with taking her notary exam that morning is so believable.

Morgan Byrd

Dorothy must be the only 18-year-old in Indiana that knows how to use a notary

Rob McBobson

I think this would be even funnier to me than it already is if I knew whether it's possible to notarize a letter like that for real, or if it's only thanks to Dorothy's being Dorothy that it managed to happen.

Rob McBobson

I'd be happy about a letter like that, and goodness knows what that says about me... :)

DramaQueen

But also Becky always plays the clown to deflect. I doubt she will change her strategy here with her roommate, unless she actually allows herself to think about what a crisis Dorothy has been having for months now.

Maybeeus

I don't think i'm that great at getting into the headspaces of characters but i think i'm close on my read on Becky. She's smart enough to know that there's nobody to really blame for what's went down in the past few days (but she'll blame herself) and doesn't really hold a grudge against Dorothy. I imagine a part of her probably would even happy she's bounced back but sometimes we're still just at the whims of our own irrational emotions. I don't know if her and Joyce will ever be best friends again however. A thought that crept in the back of my mind back during Me And Who You Say I Was Yesterday before we locked the fuck in was that Dorothy would probably end up having to distance herself from Joyce. We were already pretty firmly past the point of no return by that point and their relationship could never return to what it was. The status quo had already been cracked it was only a matter of it finally fully breaking apart. Most of what i said i think applies to Becky now in a twist. Becky has been very adamant about not losing Joyce when it's been clear since the start of the comic that it was a battle she was always doomed to lose. I still wonder how much of her falling out with Christianity is from Joyce and Dorothy getting together or if she had already pretty much arrived there but was in bitter denial to maintain any semblance of status quo in her life. Now let's see all the horrible ways i'm proven wrong!

Packy Anderson

It's not all that much work to find a notary public and get them to notarize a letter. You just need to sign it in their presence, and show them ID proving to them you are who you claim you are. It's just a lot of hoop jumping that only Dorothy would bother with.

DramaQueen

She’s been driving Joyce (and Dorothy too) away with insults all semester, I doubt that will change. Dina and Becky had a great time hiding/flaunting their own sexual relationship and making fun of a potential Joyce freakout together, insulting Joyce’s autism, making fun of and getting mad at how awkwardly she tried to get to grips with it, trying to make her freak out about the birth control etc. Didn’t they even make fun of her glasses? But we can hope Dorothy and Becky (and then Becky and Dina) can talk it out like mature, rational people who go to therapy.

Packy Anderson

I figure there's got to be a notary in the Bursar's office.

DramaQueen

Becky is wearing Dorothy’s clothes too? Or just copying them.

GundamBradley

I'd probably appreciate that she was intending to be thoughtful and to minimize damage, but I also might feel patronized, which is kind of a common issue with her. Apologies are West Wing speeches with her and not a conversation with two participants.

Astariel

@The Lurker - Can notaries notarize their own documents? Even if they're allowed to, Dorothy would probably see that as a conflict of interest and refuse to do it.

Tessea

Gahhh! Nothing from Becky! x.x But she's not frowning at least? I really don't want to see these friendships break. All I want is for Becky to ask for a hug. Just something to show that things will be okay for both of them. Then Becky can focus on apologizing to Dina.

Maude Reads Things

She didn't have that when she came in. Dorothy managed to simply spawn it into being by panicking

Tessea

She likely meant to leave it for Becky to find. but I like your version better. :D

Sajuuk-Khar

Good news! Becky and Dotty are gonna be fine. Mostly. Bad news is about everything else, especially apologizing to Dina, but, you know, there is the one win. (Also, as stated below, but hot take: Becky doesn’t really need to apologize.)

Sajuuk-Khar

Hm. I’m not going to co-sign some of the above, because I think it’s driving at some points I have fundamental differences with and it’s not gonna add anything to get into it BUT I *will* say that Dina being an enthusiastic participant in flaunting and centering their own romantic/sexual relationship and especially its triumphs, apparently while all the while realizing that Becky’s prior feelings were completely unaddressed and feeling they were a total dealbreaker if they ever came up, is a major reason I don’t really feel suuuper bad for Dina right now (sorry Dina fandom! She’s flawed! I love her but I think she’s kind of handling this like an asshole! But it’s because she’s dumb and young) and I’m not in a huge hurry to see Becky apologize to her.

Sajuuk-Khar

Like honestly, honestly, as a person with real severe depression but the meds are working good, if the person I loved dropped me like a hot potato at my lowest point to date for trying to process my feelings, and then expected an apology from me, I would be, uh. It would take a while.

AE Gonzalez

Mike came back from the dead just to make that burn.

Dan Rabin

Yes to Packy Anderson's comment. The couple of times I've had a document notarized here in the U.S., I have just had to show ID to the notary and swear that the statements I make in the document are true. Notaries are abundant: I've used a staffer at a UPS shipping store. I am aware that the term "notary" means different things in different countries.

NekoIncardine

NORMALLY they are not - the specific point of being a Notary Public is you're a certifying third party. However, notarizing an apology is weird enough that it took Dotty some effort to get if she didn't just stamp it herself.

Railway Series Book Club

becoming a notary public at 18 sounds like an incredibly dorothy thing to do in a similar vein i like to think dorothy signs up for pollworking gigs whenever election season rolls around, which she'd have been qualified to apply for as young as 16, so by this point in-universe she'd have a lot of experience at that under her belt lol

Sky Starlight

1. When did she have the time to write that? 2. When did she have the time to get it notarized?

Harold

Kenneth "Kit" Chen, M.D. (Pending Reinstatement) / Fully Licensed Notary Public

Ragtime

I bet Dorothy has a whole binder full of apologies for hypothetical wrongs

Sajuuk-Khar

(Honestly I don’t relish it but I can absolutely see a scenario where Dotty is fine, Joyce and Becky are never the same but they’re fine, and Becky never even looks at Dina again)

Margaret Ann

I'd be willing to bet she wrote it a long time ago just HOPING she'd get to use it one day.

CoreyWW

“Well I was gonna say an apology letter won’t make the hurt go away, but it IS notarized, so…” Okay bits aside, this comic is hilarious, this is so in character for Dorothy to do lol

CoreyWW

Hmm, your ideas are intriguing to me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.

KittyKai

Becky I stg if you pull that same "I am totally fine and nothing is wrong" bullshit on Dorthy like you did Ruth, I am chucking a therapist on your ass-

Mitzi B.

Honestly, a notarized apology letter would work on me. You spent twenty bucks to formally apologize, that's gotta mean something.

Empress of Robots

Also, jokes aside, although notarizing an "Im sorry I stole the heart of (and fucked) your best friend/lifetime crush" letter is objectively both funny and VERY DOROTHY, I feel like a notarized apology feels less personal? Like, the kind of thing your parent(s) make you write...

Jeremy AR

Honestly i gander that it has to do with Dorothy clear autism. She fells more comfortable writing down her apology ahead of time where she can has out all the detail in a controlled environment instead of having to improvise in a emotional moment (see her utter failure at breaking up with Walky by herself). It's kinda like scripting, a lot of people accuse Dorothy of talking at people instead of having a two way dialogue, but i think that is just her rehearsing what the best things to say are in her head constantly.

tifani

Ok on the one hand this is Dorothy taking comfort in doing things “officially” working within the lines which I can understand because her decision to just do what she felt like completely disregarding any and all etiquette is why she’s in the situation she is now but this also goes with my whole impression that Dorothy is uncomfortable doing anything without witnesses and a degree of separation. Here she is caught in a human moment that she was sneaking around in the dark trying to avoid.

Astariel

Dorothy is very into the kind of things your parents make you write. Like that time she made Walky write a thank you note.

Edwin I Callahan

But Dorothy already has done that. She just didn’t mention it because it’s so obvious.

Dan Rabin

Astariel: in cursive!

5099 5618 v2.0

@Edwin I Callahan Sure, but this is more "the dialogue option no one picks" than any form of truth. It's just the thing I could imagine Becky saying that would most effectively freak Dorothy out in that particular moment

Empress of Robots

Jokes on Dorothy: Becky is a zoomer and can’t read cursive

Girlycore

Five whole bucks!

NinjaZaku

There's something genuinely disheartening about the way that Becky seems to just...not be reacting to Dorothy's presence at all. She's not even mad, she's just numb.

Maude Reads Things

Great, so we'll all agree that that's what's canon! :D

Gale Tazzin

lmao they both are embracing darkness

Harold

Hello darkness my co-equal best friends

Gale Tazzin

ah but you see, Becky assumes everything is her fault, so she will disregard your hot take no matter how correct it is
