They met back when it was parental visit weekend. It was only a couple of strips so you could have missed it.

2026-09-09 04:00 Okay freeze frame: let me reiterate how important Jocelyn is and I forget how much she mean's until I see her on the big screen again: I know passing is a shit concept. I know transpeople should be accepted as who were are, whoever we are or look like, or our pronouns. But that doesn't make disphoria go away. It doesn't change how much self esteem I get on the days I "pass" more. How validating it transitioning and HRT has been for me in so many ways. But not every day is a good day. Joce isn't super fem or masc or butch though. She's super kinda androgynous. And their are cis women and men like that. There are intersex folks of every gender or lack there of like that. And Sometimes that grounding, that reality, is super important. Sometimes you need that in the back of your head to handle the shittier days when it comes to dysphoria or dysmorphia. Not saying she isn't pretty, far from it. She just reminds me that "beauty" or "feminitity" or looks in GENERAL have nothing to do with respecting her or her pronouns. That comes from just being her. She's also a v good bean and that is awesome, too.

I love the cat popping by in panel 3 to murder the keyboard or whatever. I also love Jocelyne's smile in the last panel. Pure delight. The concept of a Joyce that DOESN'T wear her heart on her sleeve, and IS in control over her emotions is strange and frightening, but also strangely fascinating.

Syringa Vulgaris

Jocelyn is super important to me too for a lot of the reasons you say. Particularly, the way she's just sort of there, living her life, struggling with the closet, and basically only having the character tags and that one strip with Ethan indicating her trans status. She's not ABOUT being trans. Arguably being a writer is just as central to her as a person, perhaps more. In fact that's what I adore about transa portrayals in this strip in general. Carla isn't The Trans Character (and if ANYONE was going to rub your face in their transness, it would be her), she's just this lovable asshole who happens to be trans. I believe the first mention of her trans status was that (pitch-perfect) one-off joke in the Whiteboard Dingdong Bandit? She didn't outright mention being trans until it was relevant to the plot. Willis is killing it on this.

Syringa Vulgaris

The other reason Jocelyn is so precious and vital is that there needs to be more than one trans character. One character in isolation carries the burden of standing in for All Trans, and hey, I love Carla, but she ain't me. She's the ultimate Evil Genius Revenge Fantasy Trans, and that's great. Jocelyn tho...if I had come out to myself a decade earlier I would literally be her (my religious upbringing is ridiculously close to the Browns'). That matters. Jocelyn is pure and good and I'm so thankful for her. It would be great to see some AFAB trans characters in the strip as well, now that I think of it. Just a side note.
