This one would have ran right after the below strip:

It's hard to tell from the pencils, but it was a continuing of Stacy and Danny's conversation that we left with them in the lobby before Amber went upstairs.  It gave some good information, but I thought the included finished strip was too good of an endpoint for that story thread, and the flow of the story felt off running with it past that point, instead of switching elsewhere.  I figured I could deliver the information in a future strip, which I eventually did.

It's probably hard to see what exactly is going on in the unfinished strip, so in panel four, Danny is setting down his hat on the floor, and then in panel five he is playing his ukulele and a passing student is throwing change into his hat.

I prefer the way the information was delivered in the original strip, honestly, for a number of reasons, but I thought it was more important that the story thread end on that strip with Ruth and Amber, instead of meandering on like a zombie.

(OH HEY, I just noticed I can set posts to become public after a certain amount of time, and I thought I'd try it out with this particular post.  I won't do that with, like, the bonus strips, but I thought it might be fun to do with this rejected strip post.)

"We want to sue you because our rapist son came after your daughter with a knife!" God, this stinks of money and privilege. A sodding minister, too. Using money he mooched off his congregation for the lawsuit.

MiqoRems

It's kind of unnerving how the societal view of such money seeps over even into her viewset- 'luckily, we were able to claim self-defense'. Claim. As if there's some sort of doubt.

Simon Magid

*sigh* Yes. It is also bound into the legal language. You _claim_ a position and then you have to establish your right to it. Videotapes would simplify it but that is still the way it works. The damned thing is that when going about it that way, Amber and her family are forced into the ludicrous position of having to establish their _innocence_. Which is of course logically impossible, so the one with the most money to pour into the mess is highly likely to win.

MiqoRems

If they *are* using Joe's dad's money to help with it, though, there's at least the slight silver lining that they may well be able to afford to countersue him for assault.

David M Willis

Oh, and Stacy's fingers are crossed in that last panel. I think. Sometimes you're not sure what your own visual shorthand is.

Anna Phylaxis

Hooked up to a dozen machines? Not punishment enough for the rapist fuck, but, I mean, it's a pleasant thought, at least. Warms the cockles of the heart.

Nailbumwees

A belt sander is a machine. Just saying.

Bagge

It was a great gag with Danny getting tossed a coin.

Packy Anderson

That's the one piece of information in this that I wish had made it into a canonical strip.

Jessica

I mean...but how do you think Court should work? Start off with a presumption that whoever has the least money is right? The idea is that Court is where you show your case and establish that you are entitled to relief. That burden lies with the person BRINGING the suit, even though the burden does shift a bit when someone asserts an affirmative defense. And anyway, no one is proving "innocence" in a civil lawsuit, but establishing liability. And..I mean, look at it from the position of Ryan's parents. Assuming that Ryan can talk and no one has seen the tapes. Ryan ain't honest with his parents. Ryan pegged Amber as AG. If he's telling them this girl was following him around for the last few days/weeks and very, VERY publicly trying to pick a fight...I can see where they might think they have grounds. The decision to take legal action isn't necessarily delusion or money and privilege winning over decency.

Simon Magid

Yeah, no. I do not believe in any good intent on part of that piece of human offal’s parents. This person is a serial rapist who blames Joyce for ‘ruining’ his life because she helped expose him for what he is. His parents somehow either managed to raise him with no idea of what their son was really like or they actively taught him that his privilege let him act however he wanted. If the former they are at best guilty of an appalling neglect; if the latter they are at best enabling him. Either way they are using their privilege to attack their son’s victim and exploiting that the system gives advantage to the wealthy. As to your strawman that I want an unfair advantage to the poor, kindly go masturbate rectally with a powered drill. I want a LEVEL field. I suppose that such a thing is an astounding idea to a valiant defender of the rich, powerful and privileged.

Jessica

Screw you, dude. If pointing out that bringing a lawsuit isn’t so mind bogglingly crazy from the point of view of characters with different information than we do as readers is “valiantly defending the rich, powerful and privileged “ then I can see engaging you is a waste of energy.

Simon Magid

Oh dear. Did I offend you by stating outright how your stance sounded to me? How sad. I would feel really bad for you IF YOU HAD NOT BOLLOCKING STRAWMANNED ME BY ATTACKING A POSITION I DID NOT TAKE. But by all means go away if you want, I hate rape apologists.

Jessica

Well I hate men that suggest women whose opinion they don’t like should be anally violated with power tools. Really rich you jumping on me as a rape apologist there.

Simon Magid

Please, dear. I did not say you should be anally violated. I told you to do it to yourself; obviously you are free to refuse. You are clearly capable of refusal as you do not only refuse to realise what a hypocrite you are but that you also refuse to even understand the situation. As for the charge of rape apologist, I not only stand by it, I reiterate it. Rape culture and rape apologia are not only pervasive but broadly tolerated -- or as in your case, actively embraced. Rape culture is when a Brock Turner gets caught red-handed violating a woman and numerous defenders step forward and say he just made a bad mistake, that 'ten minutes should not ruin his life'. Rape culture is when he gets a limp wristed slap as punishment and the victim's side is barely even considered. Rape culture and apologia is when a Brock Turner's family close ranks around him even when he is caught red handed -- and they do their best to shift blame to the victim. And rape culture and apologia is, above all else, tamely accepting all of the above as normal, retreating to the old, old excuse of 'there are two sides to this issue.' Your pathetic claim that 'maybe they believed Ryan's lies' does not hold water when even superficially examined. An eyewitness reports that Ryan came for _Dorothy_ with that knife. The 'stalked' Ryan somehow brought a knife to a place where he did not belong and had no good reason for being, and why would he need to do that to confront a stalker? Possibly because the 'stalker' only 'stalked' him in places where he did not belong? Also, we know from Joyce that _two other_ girls came forward with their own stories. With this much evidence against Ryan's lies, and so little logic needed to expose them, we return to my original point that his family is either negligent to the point of naked stupidity or knowingly enabling him. And on top of that they are suing Amber's mother, a single mother with low income, knowing that even if they lose the case, the cost will highly likely ruin Amber and her mother financially. This is also known as being vindictive and abusing power and privilege. And _that_ is most certainly rape culture -- and defending them for their part in it is embracing rape culture, or in plain speech, rape apologia. One of the biggest problems with rape culture and what makes it so hard to fight is how permissive people are of it and how eager they are to defend the poor innocent rapist and their poor innocent enablers. And in this specific case? YOU ARE THE PROBLEM.

Jessica

Oh please, the point of your words was clearly to suggest that I, a woman saying something you don’t like, should have a vividly described sexual injury inflicted upon her. And don’t you call me “dear.” As for the rest? Whatever. All I’ve said is that I can see where, given the information about Amber/Amazigirl following and fighting with Ryan earlier, his parents might think there’s grounds to believe they have grounds to sue without being absolutely around the freaking twist. But whatever, interpret it however you want and have a nice day.

Simon Magid

For someone who calls me not worth engaging you are spending an awful lot of time trying to get the last word in, dear. Shouldn't you run along? I hear Kevin Spacey and Harvey Weinstein are looking for unethical lawyers to defend them, surely they can use you.

Fart Captor

Simon: she misunderstood your description of the shitty way the legal system works as approving of it being that way. You started out well by clarifying what you meant, but then had to go and get really nasty towards Jessica over a simple misunderstanding.

Simon Magid

Fart Captor: She made an insulting strawman where she claimed I wanted the system to favour the poor and then proceeded to attack that position. And I stopped clarifying eventually when I realised all she was doing was insulting me and not even bothering to either state a position of her own or explain why she thought my arguments were wrong. As to defending Ryan's family's actions, see above. That stance is rape apologia and I will have none of it. If she wants polite interaction, she can follow two simple steps. One, argue fairly without shabby tricks like that strawman. Two, she can respond to my arguments instead of whining about how mean I am to insult her just because she insulted me first. If she does that, I will not only retract my insults but even apologise for them without reservation.

Richard C Gordon

Thanks for making this public, I'm not currently making enough money to be a patron anymore, but it's always nice to see into your creative process.

Doomed

He is in a coma. His father can say something like "You were slandering his imagine online. He was scared. So he came after you and threatened you to stop. He was just a poor, innocent boy pushed beyond reason by a bloodthirsty harlot."

Simon Magid

Oh yes. He has access to tons of excuses, all of them bad. That is not the point. The point is that he _could_ get at the truth if he wanted to but that he is failing to. That makes him either negligent to the point of stupidity or actively malicious, and either way he is reinforcing rape culture.

Simon Magid

Upon due consideration, I agree that I went too far when I suggested that Jessica injure herself anally with a power drill and I apologise unreservedly for that.
