Look at this rough draft! There's not even enough room for Ruth in that final panel to deliver her own punchline! But it was important for me to have the slightly-altered third panel of Mary but with her expression changed from "pleased" to "wtf," as it amused me. But it had no room for the punchline! Boo! I hate it! Well, I mean, it's okay, but I hate the situation the strip's composition put me in.

Here's a new ending. I didn't want to leave that "his bride, the church" bit unremarked upon, since it's a surprising bit of phrasing I think any rando would say "wait, what" to, and what else is this whole webcomic for but delving into the "wait, what" of fundamentalist christianity.

and at some point around here i post this to Bluesky

However! This second version has a punchline that would've been nice for Carla to help deliver if she hadn't already exited in the previous strip! Ruth is delivering a Carla punchline. Would Ruth know what "forcefemming" is? Would Joyce???? I deploy the narrative crutch of "Joyce already learned something smutty/kinky through having read Amber's fanfics" too much. And the new punchline no longer involves Ruth exiting. She's still here. Now I'd have to spend another strip on her leaving!

Anyway, I showed this second pass to Wack'd, and then also the first pass, and she thought the first one was a better punchline and more in-character. and dammit she's right, as always

So.

I killed my darling of the Third Mary Face, not to mention my darling of "The Church Bride" commentary, and substituted what was three panels for two wide shot panels that illustrate the original punchline better.

RIP Dumbing of Age Book 17: "Gotta Admit I Didn't Have 'Forcefemming The Church' On My Bible Bingo Card"

...'course, in the final art, ruth is looking over her shoulder in a way that doesn't break her neck (unlike in the pencils where she's got her head fully turned around), so now folks think she's talking to the audience, whoops

oh and packy requested the final infodumping panel without the obscuring characters so HERE IT IS

I personally like the original version where Joyce is less a plot device to distract Mary and having an actual conversation about what a weird metaphor the bride of God is. Also, Amber’s books have got these characters horny.

Packy Anderson

I still want to read the full text of Joyce's autistic infodump from the final panel...

I can only read the beginning of this post in Chad Kroeger voice.

Ian Cull

It worries me sometimes how much our author knows about this subject!

Going88

She's imagining the world without her or her in heaven or forcefemming the church?

Jack Deeth

This is one of my favourite strips of recent memory

Gwen Sanger

Thanks! I wanted this too. I love learning weird church lore.

Ian Cull

Ha … rapture …

Steve McSheffrey

From that last panel, it feels like Joyce lived my childhood.

Maude Reads Things

Hopefully we get that bride punchline another time because it is golden

Jamie (QueenofSodor)

also: even if you haven't already written one, there is still time to come up with a title-worthy forcefem bit! there is still time!!!

Minzoku Bokumetsu

I feel like Third Mary Face is definitely a darling you could (and should!) shoehorn in elsewhere tho

I've probably said before, but one thing I did not anticipate when I discovered Dumbing of Age was it also appealing to my background having formerly preached semi-regularly at a small Oklahoma Church of Christ...

I’m curious if Joyce learned about forcefemming from one of Amber’s stories. It doesn’t seem like a genre Amber would be into. If not, what chain of fanfics led Joyce to that discovery?

"I didn't want to leave that "his bride, the church" bit unremarked upon, " - me too! But I was tired, and got distracted reading the comments. Your joke is better than whatever half-baked cthing I forgot anyways.. ohh, it was about whether God has sex with church buildings 😆

Always being behind on everything now has some advantages, like all the stuff being there when you meerkat up.

EbonyInk

As a comics creator myself this is exciting and awesome.

Reminding me of when I learned the gospels describing Christ's birth and works were just the latest copies of similar stories about anyone's powerful friend at the time... like it was trendy to say your great uncle turned water into wine.
