This would have been the third strip in the storyline, following the first two flashback strips.  The Sal/Marcie flashback sequences came in threes, and I figured I'd follow their template.  But this strip was definitely unnecessary for a number of reasons.

1) Man, Mike is going all Sherlock way too quickly.

2) This flashback is supposed to ease into Ethan and Mike having a reasonably benevolent relationship interplay in the present day, and this leaves them on a sour note.

3) I didn't really want to give the impression that, like, Mike started out merely saying things bluntly, just being so perceptive that he turned people off, rather than being, y'know, a jackass.  That WOULD be a pretty fun arc, if I were interested in (badly) rehabilitating Mike as a character.  But he's done too much that's kinda shitty, and that definitely wouldn't land.  It would work if Mike had been more mild along the way, but he hadn't, so oh well.

No amount of backstory really rationalizes Mike's behavior.  You can bring some fleeting traces of nuance, which is what I attempted to do, but just about any approach where you "explain" Mike to make him "okay" just makes things grosser, narratively.

Anyway, later I essentially reskinned this strip to be mostly about something else later in the flashback timeline, because it was 5am and it'd been a terrible day and needed a break.

Mike waits 20 years to finally destroy them.

He plays the long game.

Well, shit. I'd have punched him by this point so score one for perceptive jackass I guess?

Bagge

As always, it's interesting to see the narrative process!

Mike is... A difficult character to write with the intention of getting empathy from the readers. Given that there have been multiple incarnations over the years, and in every continuity Mike has been the epitome of asshole, it's a little hard to get through the layers of expectations that have built up. Anyone who's been reading your comics for a while more or less think "Mike does Mike things because he's just a huge fucking douche" whenever he shows up. No matter what light you try to paint him in at this stage, your audience will just assume that he's doing things with ulterior motives. It would take an equivalent amount of backstory to justify the mountain of shitty behaviours we've seen thus far, and that's a lot of work.

I realize he's a fictitious character and thus can't be analyzed, but part of me continues to try to figure out how he turned out the way he is, based on what we have seen of his parents. Also I don't know if the Mike in this universe becomes "nice" when inebriated.

It doesn't really seem like Mike's being particularly perceptive here either, just kind of mean and pretend-Sherlocky. Like, we have no reason to believe him, and the accuracy of his burns is basically an informed attribute (or not even that), right?
