I sat on these strips for about a week or so, feeling a general dissatisfaction with them, but unable to come up with how to solve it.  This should be a big moment!  Bigger than them trying to punch each other to death a few strips ago, but it felt like it kind of limped to the end.  (the strip where they and Carla arrive at Roller Derby would have run after this unaltered)

This should've felt more like the very beginning of The Killing Joke where Batman shows up in Arkham and was all like "dude, Joker, we're gonna murder each other if we don't cut this out, how can we cut this out."   I can't remember what the catalyst was, but I realized I needed to restate the stakes.  There wasn't enough tension.  The storyline's resolution needed to feel more triumphant, and that doesn't land properly if they kind of go "sure whatever let's go hang out."  Plus neither Amber nor Sal trust themselves to do the right thing, and that had to be put at the forefront.  I made them testier with each other, and Amber reminded us that she thinks she's essentially a stabby machine that needs to be kept in check.  I added Sal reaching her injured hand out for a handshake as a more overt statement of purpose.  And the storyline's title is "Flyin' to the Red," so dangit if we don't need some solid red backgrounds as we reach the finish line.   Being offered forgiveness is a surefire way to make Amber's brain go unhappy.    It's the Big Moment the original version was lacking.

My regrets are losing the better lead-in to Dina's pachycephalosaurus-gathering punchline, since Amber's tee up ("what *I* want to hear is....") got moved forward a strip, and also Amber's "sitting Riker-style" quip.  It didn't fit the flow of the conversation, such as it was, anymore.

oh and my wife made me delete the arms off the chair sal was sitting in despite my insistence that all the chairs should be the same and that dina's chair couldn't be armless and she said yeah you're being Weird again

Okay, she's sitting Riker-style, but did she sit down Riker-style?

I watched all of TNG and didn't realize back then how often he does that.

I like these; the first two strips are more clearly [to me] stating that it's time for a resolution / move forward

Hmm, I'm not sure which I like better. On the one hand, these strips definitely lack a sort of emotional punch, but on the other hand, they avoid the unpleasantness a lot of people felt about Sal being the one to reach out when Amber's (well, actually AG, but Sal doesn't know the difference) the one who's been doing the stalking and harassing but still gets forgiven first before doing anything. I feel like this one moves forward while also still keeping them testy with each other, which can also better set up whatever bumps in the road these two will have moving forward (which I assume there will be - Willis has written others moving on and stumbling too well for me not to hope the same care will be taken with Sal's arc). Who knows, maybe the strips we got will actually be the better set up for any possible tension later (maybe that unasked for forgiveness will haunt Amber more. Maybe it'll grate on Sal if/when they still have problems later. I don't know, I'm not Willis). The final strips certainly set the tone better for them coming to roller derby.

I’m curious how much research was required to come up with a dinosaur that perfectly fit this situation.

Damn i luv Dina and her ability to ease tension with dino talk

I do like these, but I'm happy with the version we got. The new version has enough of that red panel tension that it made me legitimately worried that Sal's "outlet" was going to be more AG/Sal crime-fighting stuff. The fact that it then did a left turn to roller derby made the whole thing that much more surprising and sweet.

I always love getting to see this process.

Technically, most schools carry both armed and armless chairs for dorm rooms for accessibility reasons. Some students need a chair with arms, others can't have one. Some students need both, and use them for different situations. Also, chairs in particular get replaced on a semester by semester basis, usually due to loss or damaged, and suppliers shift as costs and deals do, depending on what the business office and the office of housing are currently arguing about. They are always arguing about *something,* mind.

Yes! It's so cool to see alternate takes, and hear the sort of thoughts that go through a creator's head!

Personally I like the discarded first trip a bit more then the final. I thought Sal's "Keep your enemy's close, their brother's closer" comment was a bit antagonistic when she is trying to de-escalate things. Then again she's no good at this so that was still pretty fitting, so the final is definitely the better version.

I call your weird and raise mine: I remove arms from chairs IRL when I think they should not have them. Last one was promoted from "office surplus that I'll give away any day now" to "favorite chair I use when I'm doing the things I enjoy the most" with that move.

I once liked sitting Riker-style. Then I did it with my fly down in the back of a classroom, and everyone turned around to look and snicker. I never did it again.
