It could've been a genuine prank truce, aimed to not actually hit anyone. I'm not sure that's the best way to do a prank truce however. (I wouldn't know, I've never engaged in a prank war, to the best of my recollection.)

That would have been giving her the respect due to a worthy opponent. By *assisting* her in her efforts to prank him, he simultaneously dismisses her ability to carry them out, and indicates that he is not humiliated by them, even were they to succeed. Basically, he knows *exactly* what buttons to push to drive Carla nuts.
