I've only experienced this on one occasion, and it was semi-vicariously at that, but it was my vague recollection that it took a couple more frames between eating and "fwoomp!". It's possible it varies per cat, or per breed of cat or something.

Moreso the first two panels, where the cat wanders in as if it owns the place and eats more food than should physically fit inside the cats body. The hair everywhere comes later.
