Lagia Chris

Gender was lost in translation.

*happy squeak* Marcie! Marcie is too adorable. And hi Malaya! Now the question is did she not get it or is she ducking the answer?

Minzoku Bokumetsu

ahahahaha nice I watched our governor speak about COVID-19 today and was trying to parse the ASL translator, and it felt like a strangely complicated speech to translate on the fly like that, even if I knew more than the one word ("medal")

Bagge

That clears that up

Bagge

Well, yeah, but how many of them was there any chance of Malaya knowing the signs for?

Dean Reilly

Malaya was social distancing before it was cool.

Malaya Error 501: Gender Not Implemented

Bonnie Fiddis

I’m leaning more towards the latter as she’s deflected this line of questioning before but she’s trying to play it off as the former.

NinjaZaku

My ASL may be rusty but I appreciate this joke all the same.

Aggghhh! Sorry, David! Just as I hit the "like" button, I watched it go from 69 to 70. Sorry, sorry, sorry.

Damn. I really wanna post this on a bunch of queer subreddits but since this is patron-only content, I can't.

Bagge

That's fair. ...for all the good it did her getting Malaya to understand what she was saying

Blueberry

that's correct! some words are gendered (mom/dad, etc - most familial relationship signs specify gender) but when you're talking about another person there's just sort of a "them". The pronouns so to speak are really just "I", "you, who I am talking to", and "that other person there", plus plural variations.

Blueberry

Also, anyone studying beginner ASL would likely learn the "wh" words (who, what, where, when, why, how, which) very early on, which makes it extremely unlikely that she would miss "which". NGL my initial interpretation was that Malaya was understanding it to be about sexuality, not gender, but I didn't understand the "take a hike" bit before I thought about it for a second.

Marcy: "What are your pronouns?" Malaya: "What are pronouns?" Marcy: "Indicative but not exculsive to gender identity" Malaya: "Stop swearing at me!"

A.

that's so cute and heartwarming actually
