2026-09-09 04:00 ... so he frequently devolves into cartoonish fundie villainy, and I don’t want to discount that because Toedad is by all accounts wrong, but these little glimpses of a more complicated character who genuinely loves and worries about his child really enrich the story for me. He’s bad and does evil, toxic things, and he honestly believes he’s doing right by Becky.

It's important to remember that evil isn't (always) perpetrated by mustache twirling Snidely Whiplash types, but instead by people who genuinely believe they are doing the right thing.

Battlecrazed Axe Mage

Parents can be complicated--I feel that :c Hope you're doing okay!

Packy Anderson

The best villains are the heroes of their own narratives.

Alacrity Fitzhugh

It's been almost 12 years since my dad passed, and even now hardly a day goes by that I don't want to talk to him again.

Azrael Macool

She died of an overdose. I don't think the exact reasons have been made clear, if it was a suicide or just an accidental OD. I'm inclined to believe suicide, presumably due to depression and having to deal with repression from ToeDad and the fundy community, but I don't think we have a confirmation on that yet. At least not in-comic, WIllis might have talked about it somewhere else and I've missed it.

Maude Reads Things

The initial comic came with a massive content warning for attempted suicide, so yeah, definitely intentional.

as someone who has lost a parent, i feel ya. thanks for being so wonderful <3

I'M SAD!!! WHO COULD HAVE GUESSED?

Bagge

Also, WHY IS BECKY LEFT AT HOME, ALONE WITH THE GHOSTS? WHY IS SHE NOT WITH JOYCE AND HER FAMILY???????????????

Bonnie Fiddis

Sorry Willis, bad timing on our part.

Shane Wegner

We voted how we voted, and get what we deserve.

Lethurblaka

Sorry Willis, didn't know what time it was. 😕

Captain Button

The bonus comic we deserve, not the bonus comic we need...

Cryptic

Blaine is cartoony villainy. Toedad is the kinda shit that actually happens to people.

Real talk: for a long moment here, I read this strip as the last conversation Becky's mom and Ross had before she died. "Huh, she was putting herself through college, that's a neat wrinkle and adds to the tragedy." The sad vibe also worked if she was close to the end and Ross had some knowledge of her problems but not how to help (which is one of my personal nightmares, by the way). And of course, Becky's mom and Becky would look alike. Only the empty chair guided me back to what I'm now pretty sure was the intended reading.

Similar here: took me until panel 3 and the 'graduate' thing to realize that this is how Becky looked before the Super-Glue-'accident'

Why do you think he took to the mask so hard? He's a comic book villain and he knows it.

Meagan Fischer

I see why Becky has some love for her dad. He tried, in some small way, to be a dad. Offering to help with homework, and encouraging her to get through school. Too often people get written off as being in one category or another ("good" or "bad" parent). Acknowledging the complicated reality can be too heartbreaking, but I think that's what Becky has been doing all along, in her moments with her dad (in the hospital, when he died).
