Can never go wrong with Carla. Good choice!

C

The more things change, the more things stay the same.

Pigeon

Please give Carla all the attentions.

Eric Lusby

Ketchup on top, mustard on the bottom, never touching, right?

Pierpaolo Di Camillo

Carla is the Panurge of this comic strip. She really love to mess with people in very unpleasant way, but she's still a friend. Kinda...

VengeanceKnight

*cricks neck* Ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, pickles, lettuce, tomatoes, red onions, white onions, bacon. BBQ sauce, steak sauce, Thousand Island sauce, chili, breaded onions, smoked turkey, American cheese, cheddar cheese, swiss cheese, pepper jack cheese, jalepeños, beer batter.

Outrider

Y'know, if there was a list of things that would literally make me sick if it included more than two specific items, I would probably avoid asking others about what items they would include on that list.

Jon

*pokes head in* absolutely all of this except tomatoes

Ste Saunders

I was thinking the same thing. Plus, even if Carla agreed with Joyce's preference, it's not exactly a great conversation starter. Joyce: *her lines from the strip* Carla: "I agree!" Joyce: "Yep!" *Talking point done with, need something new to discuss now*

Ste Saunders

Third option, Carla agrees, and the conversation doesn't immediately end because you get into mutual hating on people who like other options: Joyce: *her lines from the strip* Carla: "I agree!" Joyce: "Yep! Why would anyone want anything else instead?" Carla: "I know right, some people even like putting mayonnaise on!" Joyce: *barfs* ... And we're back to the original strip

Days of Horror

Honestly, the fact that Joyce likes mustard on her burgers seems like a stretch for her. And personally, I like almost anything on a burger, and often hit local chains like Boston Burger Company and Wild Willy's that put things on burgers that would make her brain explode and ruin even more pairs of Carla's shoes.

Days of Horror

Also, pour one out for the poor facilities workers at the college, having to clean up extra vomit even though it's not a party night at the school.

David M Willis

As we learned previously, Joyce's platonic ideal of a hamburger is an unaltered McDonald's hamburger. There's ketchup, mustard, and small round white things she was traumatized to learn were onions.

Days of Horror

Hunh. Just went down a rabbit hole because I thought DW had to be wrong, but it turns out that in NYC (where I grew up), mustard was not a standard topping, while it is in other parts of the country. So it always feels like something abnormal (even if I like it) on burgers.

Shane Wegner

I ate a big helping of yogurt right before reading this strip and I feel a little queasy. Props to Joyce for following through.

It makes sense to me, a person who can’t abide things on burgers which aren’t bacon, including the bun (and the bacon gets eaten first so as to avoid any weird sensory collisions). I got sensory issues for days, and I learned to keep an eye on friends who have them too. The seeming inconsistencies aren’t atypical. If the unit of food was always presented to you as being Like This before you experience its components as unpleasant on their own elsewhere, one tends to form an exception condition. Think of it like a pearl, only the grain of sand is a hamburger.

William Tessmer

Let me think of things not on your list I've had on burgers...peanut butter, egg, pineapple, fries, chips, cheese curds, coleslaw, chocolate...much like pizza, hamburgers can be a delivery mechanism for a lot of flavors!

William Tessmer

And now Carla has the perfect excuse to wear her skates all day instead of shoes (not that she needed one). Can't help but think she wouldn't have aimed for this outcome if she was already wearing her skates. Shoes are inferior and disposable, however.

Nikki H.

"Fun fact" opinion on McDonalds burgers: they taste better when you remove the pickles than when you ask for them to not put them on. I guess I need that tiny bit of pickle juice to make it taste just right. Somehow this opinion of mine feels a little Joycey.

HenryVolt

That was on Joyce Carla clearly took that as a challenge.

Ty34er

I just realized that she said hamburger, meaning she wouldn't have a cheeseburger and I'm guessing that even if she did, she would either ONLY use American cheese or NEVER use American cheese.

Aaron Treiber

Unseasoned mayo is evil. People who include it in their sandwiches are thereby cursed. Please, please flavor your mayo. I don't care what spices, or what veggies. Heck, go with horseradish and make it a hillel sandwich! But please season your mayo somehow

Elizabeth Story

mayo is the best burger condiment. the british are correct on that one.

Lisa

Panel 1 is already perfect as a standalone, and then it just keeps getting better. I love this so much. Also I sort of suspect that Joyce did this on purpose. She's a little too savvy these days to be unaware that Carla would list another topping, and that's also a bit of a forced conversation topic if she weren't angling for this absurd ending.

Maude Reads Things

I don't like anything on burgers (and eat the bun separately) so both these answers disgust me

Rebecca Paulsgrove

Joyce is like the park visitors i imprison on grassy islands in roller coaster tycoon so they don't ruin my park because they went on one (1) ride

Steve McSheffrey

Joyce is wrong. It's mustard, tomato, and onion. Never catsup and never cheese. Cheese is evil and catsup is just tomatoes ruined by sugar.

Nailbumwees

...pancetta, mac and cheese, chimichurri, chorizo, guacamole, deep-fried lasagne, gravy...

Bagge

I love how everyone was just up for each other's shenanigens

DDL

You thought it was a Carla strip but it was a Joyce strip. You have fallen into Joyce's trap.

AE Gonzalez

Carla seems to have a kink for vomit on her shoes.

WillowD

Oh, I am certain that Joyce did this on purpose. I think this may be the best Carla panel ever published, only rivaled by a few of the Carla on skates panels. Carla is my favorite character in the comic.

William Tessmer

Funny, I would argue the majority of tomatoes are ruined by the *removal* of sugar in favor of things that increase profitability, like thickened skins or uniform coloring or longer shelf lives. Bushel Boy's is basically the red delicious of tomatoes - more color than flavor, and a sad excuse for a fruit.

Gwemmie

I'm with Joyce on this one--mayonnaise is disgusting. In any context.

Madam Mango

Yepp! Totally agreeing! My roommate loves it though ... bäääähhh ...
